The 2020 George Floyd/BLM/Police Brutality Protests Discussion Thread

To be fair he did say "whom", implying someone rather than something.
Sure, let's ignore the nationwide figures that say that white shooters and white victims outnumber black shooters and black victims. Let's just keep coming back to Chicago over and over again as if it typifies American gun violence and has anything to do with the message that BLM are trying to put across. That's being "fair".

Look at the statistics.
Here is another article from a black police officer. Then go to the home page and look at what happened last night.

If the people getting shot were not committing crimes, black criminals, white criminals hispanic criminals, etc, there would be no interaction with police. You know arrest warrants,no knock warrants, passing counterfeit money, etc, etc. But that is a different statistic. BLM.What message, the peacefull protest one or the reparations one,or the riot and looting one.

Salt Lake City police shot a juvenile (probably a teen) last night who was having a psychological episode. Apparently, the juvenile fled when police showed up and one officer shot him as he was running away. There was no indication the suspect had a weapon and his back was to police. He's suspected to survive, but is currently in the hospital in serious condition.

What's it with cops shooting people in the back? Are you really a threat if your back is to someone?

And since this happened on the west side of the city, my guess is the suspect was either white or Hispanic.

As a follow up to this, we now know more.

https://kutv.com/news/local/mother-...icer-speaks-out-why-didnt-you-just-tackle-him

So the victim is a 13-year-old boy who has severe Asperger's. His mother called the CIT, which is apart of the police force but trained to deal with people having violent psychological episodes, and told them he was unarmed but needed help and to be transported to the hospital. Now assuming his mom's story is correct, the officers who arrived on the scene ended up more or less busting through the door, yelling get down on the ground, and then opening fire. Then, while he was laying on the ground after being shot, one officer handcuffed him while another looked on is disbelief yelling "how could you do this?"

The kid might've been reaching for something, who knows, but the officers were well aware of the situation before even getting to the house. Why not go in with a taser at the ready? But nope, the best course of action here was clearly a 9mm. /s

Thankfully, people are protesting this because this is an incredibly unjust shooting. We also need to wait 10 business days for the body camera footage to be released.

Waiting for someone to come in and argue that those protesters are just waiting for an excuse to riot and loot and should be protesting about all the white people shooting each other and themselves instead. WhErE's tHe OuTrAgE oVeR tHaT??!?

Unfortunately for that argument the only thug here appears to be the uniformed one who shot first and didn't ask questions now or later. I hope that poor kid recovers and that he and the hospital staff survive his no doubt by now astronomically increased separation anxiety.

Right-wing gathering doesn't like BLM protesters across the street and turns violent, attacking the BLM protesters with fists, bats, paintball guns, & mace.

Warning: Language/homophobic slur & pushing/hitting. No severe injuries shown, you'll have to click the links to read through both threads on Twitter as these start from the beginning.

The Woodward tapes revealing some statements Trump made relating to the black community.
June 19th
Do you have any sense that that [white] privilege has isolated and put you in a cave to a certain extent, as it put me and I think lots of white privileged people in a cave and that we have to work our way out of it to understand the anger and the pain, particularly, Black people feel in this country?" Woodward asked.

"No," Trump responded. "You really drank the Kool-Aid, didn't you? Just listen to you. Wow. No, I don't feel that at all."

Woodward described Trump's voice as mocking and incredulous, according to the Post.

Woodward pressed Trump to understand the plight of Black Americans who have long endured discrimination and unequal treatment and Trump claimed, as he has publicly, that he has done more for Black people than any president other than Abraham Lincoln, the Post reported.
June 22nd
Days later, on June 22, Woodward asked Trump whether he thinks there is "systemic or institutional racism in this country."

"Well, I think there is everywhere," Trump said, according to an audio clip. "I think probably less here than most places. Or less here than many places."

OK. But is it here? In a way that it has an impact on peoples' lives?" Woodward asked.

"I think it is. And it's unfortunate. But I think it is," Trump responded.
July 8th
In a separate conversation about race, on July 8, Trump complained about his lack of support among Black voters, according to the Post.

"I've done a tremendous amount for the Black community," he told Woodward. "And, honestly, I'm not feeling any love."

Meanwhile I saw other quotes of him seeing he feels no responsibility to help fix the issues facing Black people in this country.

...responsibility to help fix the issues facing Black people in this country.

I agree black people in this country need help. But where does the responsibility begin? IMHO it began during the Civil War which freed them from slavery. Abraham Lincoln understood clearly the need to provide a means for successfully integrating them into the economy. He approved Sherman's plan for reparations, which began but quickly ended upon Lincoln's assassination and Andrew Johnson's succession. Black people have suffered ever since.

As stated elsewhere, peace, prosperity and promises kept are the highest deliverables of government. The US government failed its duty to the Black people.

Being President is a good place to start.
Andrew Johnson was President. But he dropped the ball, as has every President since. The constitutional legality of reparations needs to be validated. Sherman's plan probably would not stand up today. I would guess the ball is currently in Congress's court.

Still trying to dig up dead slaves and give them reparations? I thought we went over this.

Wait shouldn't this be the case because there are more white people in the USA?

Does it hold when you compare it to population percentages?

EDIT: Just a quick glance here shows a higher death rate in every single state (that has figures) in the US for black people per 100'000 than white people per 100'000

There's more to this than what's being shared.
It’s unclear what the motive was, but Sparling said it looked to him like they all knew each other. The victim and attackers were all gone before the police or ambulance arrived.

You're looking for outrage about racism in an event where racism may not be playing a role.

So black people in the US are to blame for being shot more? OK. It sounds like we're ignoring that their economic circumstances are likely to be worse. Which no doubt is all their fault too.

Of course, as soon as one adjusts for proportionality people switch to the argument "but black people are more criminal".

What ball?
And here I thought you were smart, honest and self-confident enough to argue rationally and fairly without resorting to ad hominem innuendo. Well, maybe not? Do I need to ignore you? I will if you don't straighten up and fly right.

You gave up all right - on justice for the Black people.

I'm still working on it.

Personally speaking, if someone wants to give me "free" money, I'd prefer it to happen in a way that doesn't amount to theft and/or create a greater amount of resentment between two (or more) portions of the population.

So you're saying that you take every world issue personally and you partake in every situation that you can because no matter what it somehow affects you?

Deflection, and also not even remotely close to what was said.

For a while now, most of the US has treated race relations and police brutality (the latter of which most definitely has the potential to affect more than just minorities) with the thought process of "it doesn't affect me, so meh." It's a pretty big part of why we're in our current situation.

You must not have much free time then?

Why does it bother you that athletes are using their free time to fight for a cause they believe in? Especially if said fight doesn't hamper their ability to meet the obligations they have as athletes in their respective sports?

Why aren't you out there beating up people and rioting like the rest of them then? Since what they're doing affects you?

Deflection.

Why dont you go get a degree in public health and start working at the CDC and come up with a cure for coronavirus? So we can all stop wearing these dumbass masks.

Deflection.

Since you want to be so progressive in todays times with all the issues going on, and since you care so much. Go out there and make a difference then.

You do realize that's exactly what Hamilton, as well as the Mercedes F1 team, are doing right? By being outspoken, using their platform as a way to speak to their fans and sponsors, and turning their race car in the DeathStar (or Blackstar, if you're a Mos Def/Talib Kweli fan), they are reaching more people and showing that they're behind the BLM movement, and encouraging others to do the same. That does indeed make a difference.

I never said he wasnt doing well, im saying he should focus on his job and not world issues.

And so far I'd say Hamilton has done an exceptionally good job of not letting one interfere with the other.

Im sure it affects him to some degree, but dont try to use a spotrt as a platform for your own agenda (blm in this case). Just do it on your own time away from racing. Don't start mixing the two.

There is literal video and photographic evidence of other people mixing Hamiltons race and F1 together long before he decided to be more outspoken about it, as well as stories Hamilton has shared of his own experiences while moving up the ranks. Others started mixing the two long before Hamilton did.

Ok so were is the outrage over this? This is acceptable?

What I want is to give Black people an ownership stake in the system and its outcomes and success; a working interest and not an overriding royalty (free money).
