the "just plain ugly" car thread

I always thought the Edsel was just a bit doleful-looking, had that odd vertical grille opening, and appeared to be wearing a zoot suit. Not really ugly or hideous, but kind of extra meh.

Yeah, I just really hate the grill.

anyway, I think this is kinda ugly

I think the Panamera is something that grows on you over time. It also is a lot more appealing in person than it is in pictures.

Well, I kind like the look of the updated panamera (mostly the front end) I just don't get why porsche still trys to give than hunch look on the back.

this was by far the most suprising thing about the panamera, it looks horrible on pictures but it actually looks nice in person :dunce:

...is it just me, or does the front end of the Edsel look kind of like that guy in that painting 'The Scream' by Edward Munch? Even those little vertical parts there on the bumper. Weird...

Anyway, back on topic, I for one would never drive an Edsel if there was anything better available, but it's still one of those cars that's nice to see driving around from time to time.

Also never liked the Flex or any of the other boxy cars; I'm sure interior space is great, but if they have to look like that then I don't want anything to do with 'em.

I agree after having seen one in person last week I liked it.

I'm sure many people hate softroaders... And I remember when the Traverse came out. I hated them so much, especially when I'm stuck behind them and have to look at the rear end. The taillights are just too small!

The Traverse is just ugly, it's a full sized crossover but they are trying to make it look like a compact one.

I always found these cars ugly....

wtf? Was Japan going through a phase or something? Because it seems to me they had a habit in trying to make their cars look like classic, European cars, but massively failing to replicate their beauty.

I guess there was a bit of a weird retro design craze in the 1990s, which carried over through today on a few odd models here and there. I'm guessing there's some Japanese word for that phase, but I could also just make one up, if need be.

Wouldn't mind a cheeky Be-1, though.

According to the internet they were known as "pike cars," referring to the spear weapon of that name.

...they were intended to represent the spearhead of a new approach: adapting design and marketing strategies from other industries like personal electronics.

wow, how about that and yeah; I agree about the Be-I.

I rarely laugh out loud at a car; much more so I am just facepalming. This, however, is an exception...

LOL! How have they managed to make that so ugly? Speaking of which, why are cars becoming ugly?

I understand that it may have to do with practicality but why not make it look good.

What brand is that?

Nissan.

I suppose the "small-batch" production of cars like that isn't profitable, but it sure is interesting. I was hoping Scion was going to be more like that; then again, the profit margins on producing 20,000 units of a $20,000 car, whereby half the parts are unique to that model, isn't going to be heartwarming to the accounting department.

I think it's down to overstyling, they think we want a car that has loads of flowing lines and interesting shapes but in reality you just end up with a mess. On another note, I like the BE-1:)
