That's a collector car, the kind whose DuPont Registry ads scream "THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN." (I saw several such Ferrari ads with that announcement, caps, boldface, and all)

Nick Mason races his 250GTO at Le Mans. Not everyone who buys cars like the 250 GTO allows them to collect dust in a museum/warehouse.

Well Drifster, if it has to perform on the track well to be a supercar as well, you can't say that yet then.

The biggest tests have come from Top Speed tests, not track tests yet.

There's a difference between trial and error..
And....The Veyron W16...

That's more like..Process of elimination...

Let's throw together a 1000HP car...

When are we gonna sell it?
2001!!!!

Wait.problems..
crap...alright..

Now..Let's throw together a 1001HP car!!!!!

When we gonna sell it?
2002!!!!

Wait..problems...
crap...alright..

etc etc etc untill we get to..

Let's throw together a 980+HP car..

When we gonna sell it?
2006!!!

HOORAY!!!!

You know, that's actually pretty accurate...

But now they're under a good project manager, one hopes that they'll start delivering. :)

Nick Mason is a big advocate of driving the cars you own (and in many cases racing them), I would strongly recommend getting his book 'Into the red' in which 22 of his cars are shown, discussed and driven very hard. Worth the CD that comes with it just for the sounds of the 250 GTO and Porsche 962. Excellent photography as well.

Into the Red

Just take a look at the reader reviews down the bottom of the page, should you go looking for a copy you should be aware that it was recently updated to include his McLaren F1 GTR and its this copy you should go for.

I've thought about buying it before but at near 20 quid it's quite a bit of money for a student like myself :(

I remembering reading in a Ferrari supplement (I think it was free with Car magazine) that Nick had to run his children to school one day when it was snowing and the only car that would start was the 250 GTO. Imagine your dad running you to school in a 250 GTO...in the snow. That'd be something that would stick with you for life.

Bugatti, as the manufacturer of the Veyron, has no history at all. The 'Bugatti' who produced the EB110 (Bugatti Automobili Spa) are a completely different company with no connection except in name to VW-Bugatti (Bugatti Automobiles SAS). 'EB110 Bugatti' were a completely different company to the original Bugatti (1910-1947) who produced the Type 35 and Royale. I believe the original company still exists, and has since 1947, produced aircraft landing gear. The Veyron comes from the same stable as the VW Lupo, It has no links to previous Bugattis what-so-ever.

Most 250 GTO's are used frequently on the road and race track, probably more so than a lot of Ferraris.

Has anyone heard of the 'Motor Orca C 113'?

I love this car, its built for one reason and thats to try and beat the top speed record, heres a link to the web-page its in German (i translate it with Google)
http://translate.google.com/transla...ww.orca-e.ch/&prev=/search?q=orca-e&hl=en&lr=

And here's a picture of the car!

These companies who make cars just to beat the 'production car' top speed record all seem to miss one important thing - aerodynamics. Look at the headlights of that Motor Orca C 113 - they'll cost it 5mph straight off.

I think it is quite daft that there is no lens cover on them to allow flow of air over the bonnet but you cant say that they missed out the aerodynamics! Thats the most important thing!

Maybe they have lens covers that are ugly or something removed for the photo shoot, you wont know untill you see the run for top speed!

Thats not a missed point, theyh HAVE to get the serodynamics right to have any chance of breaking the record. Lights like thoes can, if done right, do something for the car, sure they'll add drag, but theres two types of drag and one of them has a positive result, downforce.

The output wasn't reduced. The 987-hp figure is in US horsepower. 987 SAE net horsepower = 1001 DIN horsepower.

I think if they can manufacture a car like that in the first place they wont be stupid enough to not think about the aero disadvantages by the lights. Theyre not little kids but pros.

This is the Bugatti 35, perhaps one of the most famous racecars in history. Over 200 race victories both large and small over a decade of racing. Before the Silver Arrows, only Alfa Romeo posed a threat to the cars painted French Racing Blue.

However, the Bugatti Veyron is merely a Volkswagen with a different name. Chances are this car will never be raced. Which is a pity, because Ettore Bugatti sold his cars based on race victories. Considering the weight and power of this new beast, the only bit of Bugatti philosophy that has been applied, is his famous quote directed to one of his customers:

"I made my cars to go, not to stop." - Ettore Bugatti

The problems is not proffesionalism, the fine line between form over function, that all designers / engineers face

Yes put accordin to the earlier post the car was designed with only breaking the car speed record in mind.

So they havn'y reduced the HP #"S?
So you're telling me they're going to sell a car that overheats after 15 minutes of operation?

WOOOO
Bo Bugatti..
That's a Supercar if i've ever seen one.

No they haven't reduced the prower but they changed some of the intakes on the body to increase the cooling. A supercar is a car that is super in performance, over the years how that interpreted ha changed, now it's more commonly associated with cars with top performance but with that soley in mine ie no leather seats ect. The Veyron is a luxury supercar, so in that sence it's better classed as a super grand tourer.

No..
Because then the SLR would be considered a supercar..

And that's a land yacht/batmobile

Super grand tourer I can work with..

There we go..
New subdivision for cars..

Supercars - Enzo etc

Hypercars - ultima GTR, 962

Super Grand tourers - Veyron

The SLR is a super grand tourer by my definition, it's a supercar in the sence that it's as quick but it's not set performance is it's only goal, it's provided luxuries. Talking high perforance cars a car thats built for performance is a sportscar, add luxury and comfort to that and it becomes a Grand tourer, I thnk the same should be apllied to supercars. Just my opinion though.

i saw the Veyron going around the track and it looked like it had comfortable suspension, but the guy driving wasnt pushing hard at all... Anyone have a vid of some one driving hard with the Veyron?

Not hard, I've seen one incar driving at a track but he never put his foot down, he wasn'r racing the car going for apexes and stuff just driving fast.

I can honestly say that I can see why this car can cause an argument on why it is so good. The reason why, I saw it in real life twice. All last week, I was out in Calforina for my graduation trip. On of the main things tht my and my dad di was that we went to see the Rolex Historic Car Cup at Laguna Seca out there. Well, we fly in friday and around six o'clock, we find the track and drive around the outside of it. We're just getting ready to leave and go find our hotel and settle down for the night, when I see a car driving in off in the distance. At frist I'm thinking that it's just a Lambo or something. As it gets closer, I start to realize that it's not a Lambo. As it goes past us, I then realize that it's a Veyron  . At this point, my heart stops and I'm about to crap, my dad gets the hint and goes to look for it. But, it's gone and stupidly, I froget to take a picture :ouch:.

So saturday goes by and the only thing that pulls in is an enzo. But that all changes on sunday. As we're walking toward the bathroom, my dad says "Hey, there's that car." I turn around and to my surprise, it's right behind me. This time, I grab my camera and start taking pictures. I even have one of me crouching next to the car.

All I can say about this car is that it's a hellva a lot cooler that anything else that I've seen on the road. I'll upload the pictures later once I upload the software to my main computer.

The most fascinating thing about this is that you not only said "just a Lambo" but also you seem disappointed to "only" have seen an Enzo.

I'd rather see one Enzo than 20 Veyrons doing the cancan
