MS wouldn't never pay Sony royalties for every Xbox sold (which they would have to do if it had BR).. no way!

What I think they will do which others have touched upon is use a proprietary 'Blu Ray like' disk format to get all the benefits of the medium without paying any licences. Nintendo did it with the Wii with 'DVD like' disks and the Wii U.

The funny thing it MS just have such a format lying in the back room which they can resurrect... HDDVD. Just relabel it and they have their disk format.

Sony does NOT own BR. Microsoft could have BR in their console without paying Sony a cent.

The problem there is HD DVDs only hold 30GB to Blu Ray's 50, for dual layer discs anyway. Even if they came out with triple layer discs, which I'm sure isn't in widespread use with DVDs already for a reason (i.e. it's probably not feasible), they'd still be 5GB down on Blu Rays. It's in everyones' best interests for the next Xbox to feature a Blu Ray (or similar) drive so that we're not all dragged down to the lowest common denominator like we were in this generation, so many games were ruined, or at least hamstrung, by the compromises required to get them to fit in a dual layer DVD after all.

Also, Toshiba were the ones behind HD DVDs and even they gave up the fight back in 2008 when they released their first Blu Ray player, and now they're the part of the BD4C (i.e. the Blu Ray patent licensing program, they're one of the 4 in the name), so why would they let Microsoft use HD DVDs for free when they could force them into licensing Blu Ray for their console?

Source? Microsoft would have to license Blu Ray like everyone else.

So the gist of what SuperDaE had released a while back & was supposedly raided for is....

-8GB RAM

-500GB HDD

-Kinect in every system and is on at all times.

-Evolutionary 360 control pad design, 360 controllers are not compatible due to new wireless tech.

-It can run multiple games/apps at once

-Blu-ray is included but it can't play games, only install them. Every game must be run off the HDD (anti-piracy?)

It could be because of this:

This has clear gameplay implications, such as allowing a game to instantly identify a person, but could also be related to a recently-patented Microsoft system for monitoring and maybe even charging users based on who is watching what.

It could be because of this:

You're referring to the Kinect thing, surely?

I don't trust that at all, it's bad enough having a webcam built into my (ex-)laptop which spends its time under a piece of electrical tape, but I bet this new Xbox refuses to work if it can't see you. It's all a bit HAL 9000 if you ask me.

True but I meant because MS were involved in HDDVD's development and implementation in the xbox attachment they would know a reasonable amount from that to be able to create their own format which is very similar just not literally HDDVD.

30GB would be a major leap from what they are using now. I do agree that I wouldn't want gaming to be dragged down to the lowest denominator like it has been this generation with the games needing to fit on a DVD and work without a HDD but MS don't care, they would argue BD didn't really bring much to the table because games looked the same on both systems.

Sony is likely to use BD-XL which currently goes up to a whopping 128GB!

I'm sure if the no Blu Ray backlash started MS would site that you can pick up standalone players pretty cheap these days.

If the next xbox truly has a blu ray player then I would actually be very excited. Currently I have to keep switching from the 360 to the PS3 every time I want to watch a blu ray movie. If I had it all in once console that would be the ultimate gaming machine for me. Especially since I prefer xboxlive over PSN. 👍 The blu ray player is about the only thing that would convince me to replace my 360 with the new "Durango/Infinity". Nothing else has me excited at all yet. If there is no blu ray player then I really have no interrest in the next xbox.

MS & Sony's new consoles worry me a bit, the next XBox worries me most between the two. Right now, all I'm getting is....

Hopefully this changes over the course of more announcements.

I agree. Forced Kinect is nothing I am interrested in but really want to see if the blu ray player rumor is true.

Now that the PS4 has been announced its time to see what MS will do. I am predicting the next xbox to be announced at E3 because thats what Major Nelson has a countdown to this year. And he has never had a countdown to E3.

Not sure how to link the actual counter but here is a link to his counter page for E3.

http://majornelson.com/2013/01/02/countdown-to-e3-2013/

Hopefully it has these features.
1. Blu Ray (I am about 99.9% sure this is confirmed)
2. Play used games (hopefully)
3. Backward Compatible (probably not)

I'm hoping Microsoft shows something that makes me want to buy their console. Their exclusive library of games over the past few years, mostly futuristic shooters like Gears and Halo, really arent my thing.

I want to see new exciting and creative IPs like Media Molecule's puppet game or even something like Little Big Planet.

Microsoft has been chasing the "PC gamer" crowd too hard imo, they need to start creating games that can steal Playstation loyalists. For a long time they've shown little to no care about winning over the Playstation audience, outisde of securing support for Final Fantasy as well as getting Hironobu Sakaguchi to make them a few RPGs. But thats not enough, MS, you need to do much more.

But maybe in the end these are two different consoles which intentionally appeal to two different fanbases

Well yeah different gamers want different things. I really don't care for any of those arty farty games or even LBP, bored me. I don't like FPS either but I'm pretty sure the reason I bought a 360 first this gen was the lower price and the racing game released to that point.

I'm not sure what will make me decide this time but price and games will be the main point. The initial few games for PS4 didn't wow me that much but there is still a long way to go of course, I doubt i'll buy anything at launch, I never have done. 360 was bought early 2007, PS3 late 2010.

Yep I don't give a damn about LBP either. I played it and Ratched & Clunk quest for booty because of PSN come back gifts. Nice little games but not my usual stuff. RPG? The same, couldn't care less. Xbox has Halo and Forza.

Quite corious to see the new Forza. Hope this time they'll include the possibility to fully sim a racing event. Flag rules, free practice, qualification, race, pit stops, endurance, day night transitions and stuff.

Bet you guys anything FM5 is going to be a Next Box game. I still also feel like GT6 and FM5 might get released REALLY close to each other and, with two pretty equal systems, it should be a crazy battle. I'll probably end up getting both systems and games, though. YAY! Cars!

Well yeah, I think most people worked that one out.

Something about Forza 5 has me worried. I think Turn 10 has completely forgot about the sim/hardcore racing aspect of the game. They are so focused on turning people into car lovers that they have no really long races. I remember the FM5 suggestion thread on their forums and It had plenty of ideas. Almost all of the suggestion were split into drift things and circuit things. This was probably the best post in the thread (First post on that page). Sad thing was the thread was locked for being "the worst wishlist of all time."

I know there is a lot of people who want a change in FM5 and i know they can't please everyone. I have no confidence in this Forza. It may be the best but I don't what path Turn 10 is trying to take.

Meh, all I want is a true custom event creater. 95% of it is already there, as you can set everything up in a custom online lobby. I just want to have that option for offline sessions. While being able to properly pause and earn credits. Really not that hard, so I can't fathom why T10 never bothered to implement that.

Aside from that, yeah, some longer races would be neat. As long as they're not overdoing it... But my personal, number one thing is this: An accurate representation of the 'Ring. The widened piece of crap they've been using dates back to, what, some sort of Project Gotham Racing? T10 should get a new 'Ring modelled. About time they do.

To tell you the truth (and this is my opinion btw), is that Turn 10 are to hell bent on adding hundreds of cars. Sure that's okay and all, but to be honest they work on adding cars to much nowadays, it's gonna get old real quick soon.

I want to see different things, such as remodelling the Nurburgring for one, to wide and long... As well more tracks.

I'd like to see more customizing options in Forza, or at least more elaborate ones.

Well not really because as we know T10 themselves aren't doing that much of the car modeling work. They are also well aware of what needs improving like the Nurburgring or the outdated Silverstone amongst other things.

I'm a little worried with the direction away from Motorsport that has gradually happened since 2 but I'm willing to give them a chance with the new tech before I judge them.

Haha, you're right. I'll wait and see what happens first. :)

Let's jsut hope they don't go bonkers with Kinect now that everyone's gonna have it...

I hope they don't. It wont work in my house. I've had 2 of them and both of them will not calibrate right. It always make itself focus from the chest up no matter if i put it below or above my TV. I don't know if it's the room or what but they will not work in the room I have my consoles in and there is no other room in the house I can put a kinect in. i can't even use them except for hand gestures. It won't even see your legs.

Could be something or nothing, we'll see.

Everyone seems to hate Kinect. Microsoft is trying to hard to force this crap in the market. They are failing.

And about Forza, what Luminis said.
- custom events
- better Nordschleife
- more tracks.

Kinect is a good concept it just hasn't been utilized properly...

As will most likely continue to be the case by any developer not directly under Microsoft.

For a comparison look at all the third-party software that takes advantages of the Kinect hardware on PC... What has Microsoft been doing?
