I'm crazy busy today, so to fill in time why don't you all go and run the maximum speed test just for fun, and I'll write up the final results tommorrow.

BMW M5 '05
Top Speed: 201.17 MPH

Max speed run

Ford GT Concept '02: 210.61 MPH
RUF CTR Yellowbird '87: 201.63 MPH

IMHO the Ford GT has proven to be an inspired choice, it has kicked ass at every test thrown at it (so far).

EDIT: OK so I didn't read the scoring system for the reverse test thoroughly enough (I though faster would be better) which meant the Ford GT didn't win overall, but I still stand by my statement above.

Round 5: Back-Up

You were asked to see how fast your cars were in reverse gear, scoring 1 point for every mph you were below the speed limit, and losing 1 point for every mph you exceed the speed limit.

korza493 had the most manageable car, the GT-R Concept only going 48mph in reverse, scoring 12 points.
BH-21 was a bit quicker in his Viper GTS with 54mph for 6 points.
Nazzii was just shy of the speed limit in the MB SL 600 at 58mph for 2 points.
GrumpEone set an identical speed in his SL 55 AMG with 58mph taking 2 points.
shotamagee got a speeding ticket in his Ford GT Concept for going 66mph in reverse for -6 points.

GrumpEthree driving the BMW M5 posted a manageable 48mph for 12 points.
short'wee in the sporty RUF Yellowbird went up to 55mph taking 5 points.
BH-21C with the newer Viper SRT10 was slightly faster at 56mph for 4 points.
GrumpEtoo driving the Vanquish was way over the limit at 68mph scoring -8 points.

Final Scores

Code:
Driver Car Bonus	Power	Drag	Lap	Race	Back	Total
================================================================================
Korza493   GT-R Concept	 +10	-11.5	-1	+15	+12	+12	= 36.5
shotamagee   GT Concept	 +0	-3.5	+11	+20	+11	-6	= 32.5
BH-21	      Viper GTS	 +10	-10.5	+1	+10	+13	+6	= 29.5
GrumpEone     SL 55 AMG	 +0	-0	+8	+5	+10	+2	= 25
Nazzii		 SL 600	 +0	-0	-3	+0	+19	+2	= 18

short'wee    Yellowbird	 +10	-3.5	+6	+20	+11	+5	= 48.5
GrumpEthree      BMW M5	 +0	-4	-0	+0	+12	+12	= 20
BH-21C	    Viper SRT10	 +0	-3.5	-15	+10	+13	+4	= 8.5
GrumpEtoo      Vanquish	 +10	-5	-11	+0	+11	-8	=-3

So the Nissan GT-R Concept is the best 500hp road car for everyday use. No surprise there then!

The Aston Martin Vanquish however being almost 40 points behind is shocking.

Fun Round

After the competition had ended and whilst waiting around for the results you went out to see just how fast each of your cars was. All of you got close to or above 200mph which is to be expected with such powerful beasts.

What was not expected was for the Nissan GT-R Concept to be the slowest at 190mph which would have dropped it to 3rd place had this round been scored.

The Ford GT Concept was the fastest at 210mph and would have taken the win, followed by the V8 Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG in second. Strangely this was way ahead of the last placed V12 Mercedes-Benz SL 600. I guess those extra 4 cylinders just added extra weight and no performance to the car!

...and Finally
The test cars I used, and their scores were;

Code:
Car Year	Bonus	Power	3RDrag	Lap	Tyres	Back	Total
===============================================================================
Shelby Cobra 427 '66	+5	-4	-1	+10	+11	+11	= 32
Jaguar XJ220	 '92	+0	-12	+9	+15	+10	+1	= 23
Audi RS6 Avant	 '02	+10	-12	-7	+0	+11	+20	= 22
M-Benz E55 AMG	 '02 	+5	+0	+0	+5	+8	+0	= 18

Well Done Korza493 - 2 wins in a row!

Congrats to Korza, and all who participated.

Interesting that the best car is 'apparently' a 24 year old souped up Porsche 911, I guess being new and mass produced isn't necessarily the best.

Top Gear Comparason #9: Convertibles

img0017b.jpg

Now that the summer is here, it's time for some open topped fun.

Find yourself a new convertible costing under 100,000cr.
Your car should be undriven, so has to be bought new or won as a prize.
However it must be a regular roadcar, not a concept, tuner or racecar.

You should change the oil before we start.

* When I say new, I mean model year 2000 or later.

** Do not worry about keeping money over for modifications. These cars will be on loan from the manufacturers, and cannot be modified.

*** GT4 can be a little strange when it comes to convertibles. For this comparason I want open topped fun, so choose something shown with the top down. This means some likely candidates are not eligible, i.e. the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder '03 cannot be driven with the roof down!

**** Deadlines will be set for each challenge, and I'll be deducting 1 point per hour for anyone that misses a deadline. Consider this the virtual equivalent to points being deducted for breakdowns.

You will be compared against the Nissan 350Z Roadster '03.

You have 48 hours to find and announce your chosen car(s).

I think it's time to come back.

Honda S2000 Type V, I choose you!!!

254HP after an oil change

Hm, is Caterham counted as a convertible?

Open topped? Roof down motoring? Yes, it is.

I forgot to mention that I don't want to see more than one S2000 or MX5. If you run the Type V, nobody else may choose another S2000.

I wanted to do this properly and grab me some TVR, but i was a bit too late :ill: so i took Caterham Seven Fire Blade in very nice orange finish :drool:
It has 166HP after an oil change it weights 369 kg so it has almost 450 hp per tone :dopey: By this i want to show that nowdays weight kills many great cars :guilty:

I'd like to try and have a go at this.

Not left with many good options, but I'll give it a go with the 2001 Lexus SC430.

I'm desperate so I'll take the '01 Alfa Romeo Spider 3.0V. I'll post some pics later and I may change my mind about the car.

Yeah there's a few decent cars which while they are soft tops, they don't allow you to take the top down, namely the Viper SRT/10 and the RUF 3400S.

When you buy, whether the top is up or down decides eligibility right?

^Right.

There's still quite a few cars that could be enterd.
Blue = already chosen
Red = comparason car
Purple = prize car
Crossed out = too similar to an already chosen car.

Daihatsu	Copen Active Top	2002	63	830	076	¢14,980

It was interesting to watch the cars being chosen.
First was the S2000, but then the rest were all chosen in price order, starting with the most expensive possible.

You still have about 9 hours left to choose a car before the first challemge.

Is it ok if I switch from the Lexus to the Prowler? That's the one I was originally thinking of getting but thought was not eligible since I could not buy it. I did not read the rules closely enough. :dunce:

I already have the Prowler in my garage and it has a bit more character and cool factor than the Lexus!:cool:

You can run them both if you wish. One as your main entry, the other as an alternative for comparason sake, though the alternative cannot win even if it scores more than anyone else.

I'll go ahead and change to the Prowler in that case. That way maybe someone else may want to use the Lexus.

If no one ends up wanting the Lexus I'll run it as my alternate.

Top Gear Comparason #9: Modern Convertibles

img0017b.jpg

You were sent out to find modern convertibles to compare against the Nissan 350Z Roadster '03.

Round 1: Price

Being new cars worth quite a lot of money, the scores for this round are 1 point for every $5000 under the 100,000cr budget.

Jet Badger pulled up in the cheapest ride, a Honda S2000 Type V '03 costing 37,000cr gains him 12 points.
N91KB chose the only prize car in the field, the Chrysler Prowler '02 is worth 47,430cr scoring 10 points.
korza493 in a fit of desperation chose the FWD Alfa Romeo Spider 3.0V '01 costing 51,190cr for 9 points.
Nazzii chose something lightweight, the Caterham Seven Fire Blade '02 cost 60,000cr for 8 points.
SVX went the other way with the heavyweight Lexus SC430 '01 which also cost 60,000cr for 8 points.
shotamagee went for the most powerful, a TVR Tamora '02 costing 70,940cr for just 5 points.
BH-21 chose the most expensive car, the BMW Z4 '03 is a massive 75,610cr for a lowly 4 points.

The Scores So Far

Code:
Driver		Car	Year	Price	Total
=============================================
Jet Badger    S2000	'03	+12	+12
N91KB	    Prowler	'02	+10	+10
korza493       Alfa 	'01	+9	+9
Nazzii	   Caterham	'02	+8	+8
SVX	      Lexus 	'01	+8	+8
shotamagee      TVR 	'02	+5	+5
BH-21	     BMW Z4	'03	+4	+4

You have chosen a nicely varied selection of cars, both front and rear wheel drive,
lightweight and heavy, powerful and... well nobody went for anything too underpowered.

Round 2: Laptime

The Stigs virtual cousin Bob set a laptime of 1:06.311 around Tsukuba circuit in the Nissan 350Z Roadster.
You have to try and beat him. Score 1 point for every full second you are faster, lose 1 point for every second slower.

Good Luck. You have 24 hours.
