XBL allows me to look at all the games we have both played and compare directly the achievements we each got for all the games we played.

You can also compare directly wich trophies you and your frineds have on PS3. In the friends menu. Press triangle and compare trophies.

You can also compare trophies with people who are not on your friend's list as well. By clicking on the "Player's Met" option in the Friends menu in the XMB, you can compare trophies. You can also compare trophies with anyone, even those you have not played with by simply sending that person an Add to Friends invite (located in the same Friends menu bar mentioned above). This automatically puts them in your friends list as "Pending". Now you can compare trophies with that person even though they are not yet officially on you friends list. After comparing, simply remove them from the pending list.

I have all three consoles. While the 360 works best for ME online some others can't imagine spending $4 a month for the service.

To be fair to those that say they can't imagine spending $4 a month... I suspect the reason many do not is that they don't play online for just a month, and that most likely play online for as long as they have a console. Just about any subscription fee looks small when broken up into many parts, but that's just a marketing gimmick to make it seem like it doesn't cost much. The reality is that if you have been playing on XBL for the last three years you've already spent around $150 and will continue to do so unless MS decides to stop charging for it, which is unlikely.

I'm not saying it's not worth it mind you, just that mentioning the monthly fee is rather misleading... especially given the fact so many criticized the PS3 for being more expensive, and yet just the cost of XBL alone over just four years totally wipes that cost difference out, not to mention all the other "extras" that are free with the PS3 that you have to pay for or are not even available with the Xbox 360.

My only problem with the trophy system is I haven't bought any new titles that support it, all multiplatform games are bought for 360, hopefully I will get Resistance 2 when I'm done with Gears of War 2.

Pain: Movie Studio (trophy patch)
Actually, this one is active as of yesterday.

I can't remember them all, but I know there is a gold trophy: Gettin' Hoff - score 69 million with The Hoff.

And a bronze that I earned last night: Blockbuster - Use a tank to destroy the castle tower.

PS3 Trophies to be mandatory from January 2009
By James Orry - 20/11/2008 - 6:05pm GMT
Gamers won't have to put up with titles released without Trophies.

VideoGamer.com can exclusively reveal that from January 2009 all newly released PS3 games will be required by Sony to support the console's Trophy system.

Earlier this week VideoGamer.com received a tip from an anonymous source within the UK video game industry that, from January 2009 onwards, all newly released PS3 titles will be required to support the PS3 Trophy system.

Today a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson confirmed that this information is accurate, stating: "Yes from Jan 09 all games must have trophies."

This news is sure to be met very positively by PS3 gamers who are currently having to put up with sporadic Trophy support from this winter's biggest releases. Mandatory Trophy support will also put an end to post release Trophy patches that force gamers to replay games to earn the Trophies.

Good to hear that its now mandatory because it was annoying having to find out whether a certain game would support them or not, now its a given! :)

I hope the next thing that becomes mandatory is custom soundtracks, Sony should also add a music volume slider in the XMB so you can set it so its not too loud compred to in game sounds, for example custom music drowns out the engine noise in MC making it quite useless....

You Tube and screenshot uploading should then also become standard.

Also, anyone know whats going to happen to the 3D trophy idea thats supposed to be implemented in Home? Will all dev's with currently released trophy games have to make 3D versions once Home is out?

I'm pleased, I finally got my first few trophies today. Now just to keep collecting them! I think I'll start with Burnout Paradise.

Yeah I think I just got my first one yesterday from MCLA... don't think they will be easy to get though!

After you start the music in the in-game XMB go to the very top of the music column where it shows the info for the song currently playing. I think if you hit Triangle (could be X) it basically brings up a player and one of the options is volume.

However, depending on the game even the lowest setting is still too loud. It did get better when they increased the volume range from -2-2 to -4-4. The only games that I have taken advantage of in-game music are High Velocity Bowling, PAIN!, and WipEout HD. Granted, PAIN and WipEout HD use their own system. But basically any story-based game I go with the original score because it really does add to the experience.

You Tube and screenshot uploading should then also become standard.
I am not sure how well this would go over. Screenshots, would likely be fine, but the video recording requires much more memory than any of the other features. I know the video recording feature in RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 brings my PC to a crawl. I'm not saying that it can't be done smoothly, but it would require the developers to practice proper memory management (GASP!!!).

Whereas, trophies is just using stat tracking sub-program, which most games are already using some form of so it just needs to be more expansive. Heck, a good development team could probably have a template where they just need to fill in what the variables are coming from and the values.

Screenshots can reduce memory lag by simply pausing for a second while it processes the photo. And in-game music is taking the already included music and turning it off to replace it with other music, so memory effects are likely minimal.

Anyway, as much as I would love video recording in every game it is something that I just think too many developers will push back against.

I think Sony needs to create a balance between making fans and developers happy. Trophies and music are already done for Xbox, so those get a free pass. Screenshots would be a handy feature that creative players can use to achieve most of the same results as a video recording feature.

So, I think if music is added as mandatory as well then Sony will hit a sweet spot, and they may be able to push screenshots with minimal resistance. Video though, if developers don't warm to the idea (and there are those that do not want their stuff on You Tube or Machima) I don't see it going mandatory.

Now, the discussion for developers being dumb for not wanting You Tube footage and Machima is a whole other ball that we don't need to discuss here.

Also, anyone know whats going to happen to the 3D trophy idea thats supposed to be implemented in Home? Will all dev's with currently released trophy games have to make 3D versions once Home is out?
If the lucky Home beta testers could step outside a bit and let us know if anything like it is there it would be great. There are screenshots from long ago and so much has changed that it may be something incredible or something dumb.

I can guarantee you this: now that trophies are mandatory and Home is coming soon "the no trophy, no buy" chants will change to "no Home support, no buy."

I was quite bummed to see how the so called in game music works. Firstly its way too loud (even on the lowest setting) in MCLA so it drowns everything else out. Secondly its just playing over the game, its not imbedded in any way... for example, I can't change track in game using the normal controls I would for original BGM. Thirdly (I guess I was asking for too much) but I thought that the track info would come up in the games HUD.

Im really suprised that a feature like this has to be coded into the game because nothing is really all that 'integrated' about it. It doesnt make it seem like these tracks came with the game, all your telling the game to do is mute the BGM stream!

Sony need to at least give an option to lower the XMB music volume further, then at least it will be semi useable!

I can guarantee you this: now that trophies are mandatory and Home is coming soon "the no trophy, no buy" chants will change to "no Home support, no buy."

Thats probably going to be true! I want my 3D trophies godammit!

There isn't a Trophy Room yet.

Currently we have our personal studio which we can decorate with a few items and wallpapers. You can also create your own Clubhouse, and invite friends that have Home to join you there - which I have already used to socialize with other LBP players and discuss our favorite levels and sharing tips. Some have even used them to organize online matches and tournaments... something that I'm sure would be of use for GTP's online racing leagues.

Then there are all the common areas, the Central Plaza, Mall, Bowling Alley/Billiards and Arcade rooms, and the Home Theater... but currently there are no trophy rooms.

I must admit, until my wife convinced me to check Home out, I was not a believer, but now I'm hooked. 👍

Gold is the new platinum
Well, small PSN game trophies have a greater limit on trophy points and I guess if they included platinum it would leave them with only a handful of trophies to give out.

I know the PAIN developers said that King of PAIN was their platinum, but gold only due to the point limitations.

Now, I have no clue what the criteria is for determining how many points each game gets as WipEout HD has a platinum and full set of trophies. I am sure that there is some kind of criteria. Perhaps anything priced at or over $20 is considered a full-content game?

Well, small PSN game trophies have a greater limit on trophy points and I guess if they included platinum it would leave them with only a handful of trophies to give out.
Based on my data and calculations here is the breakdown as far as what each type of game and DLC is allocated in terms of trophies points:
  • 1230 Points for Disc & Major PSN games (like Wipeout HD)
  • 315 Points for PSN Games
  • 180 Points for Add-ons
Assuming the following is true:
  • 180 Points per Platinum
  • 90 Points per Gold
  • 30 Points per Silver
  • 15 Points per Bronze
This would mean, while it is technically possible for a PSN game to have a platinum trophy, it would leave only enough points to have one gold, one silver, and one bronze. I suspect there is also a "rule" that says that any basic PSN game, thus one that is allocated only 315 points, simply is not allowed to have a platinum trophy... but this is just a guess on my part.

I have found the typical distribution to be like this:

Disc/ major PSN Game:
  • 1 Platinum
  • 4 Gold
  • 8 Silver
  • 30 Bronze
(some sacrifice a gold or a few silver to boost the total number of trophies overall)
PSN Game
  • 1 Gold
  • 4 Silver
  • 7 Bronze
(again, some sacrifice higher value trophies to boost the trophy count - for example I believe PixelJunk Eden has only 1 silver trophy and the rest are all bronze)
Add-on
  • 1 Gold
  • 2 Silver
  • 2 Bronze
    (or 1-1-4)

I had not thought of it, but FK's theory about the price point being the difference as far as PSN games sounds very reasonable.

Oh wow, thanks for the into on Blast Factor, the most underrated shooter :). I love and will be playing it after i play Soldner tonight.

Novastike is awful, its dull and the gameplay is a pain and very I did get one trophy :)

I think Warhawk follows your rule, there are seven golds attainable if you have all three expansions. Good observations. 👍 I should hit level 8 tonight.

I didn't realize that new PSN game, Brain Challenge has trophies. Has anyone played it yet?

Also, I saw this little remark listed in the latest news on trophies at that same site:

Our friends across the Atlantic are going to have an edge when it comes to Trophies, with the release of the new Buzz! Quiz TV Trophy patch.

Does this have something to do with the upcoming "Special Edition" of Buzz that's supposed to be coming out in the UK that will include all updates plus some of the question packs? If so, it sounds like that version of Buzz will come with additional trophies from some of the question packs.

Not played it yet, but I must admit its cheap and I was tempted last night to pick it up, trophies may swing that a little.

Not sure about that at all, as the UK Special Edition is already out (I looked at it in HMV last week) and the question packs are ones that you can already download from the store (National Geographic and Video Games)....

.....so nothing new in that for trophies, I think they are just a little behind the times as far as Buzz trophies go.

On other Buzz related stuff. We were talking a while ago about the add-on packs being used in Sofa vs Sofa, well I played a game a few days ago and the Videogames catagory came up, so it does look as if add-ons will be included in Sofa vs Sofa if every player has the pack.

Let me know if Soldner is actually good. I will be completely honest, I am a tad tired of shooters on the PSN. They are all omni-directional and feel the same with new graphics.

Novastike is awful, its dull and the gameplay is a pain and very I did get one trophy :)
I wouldn't call it awful, but the gameplay is funky, but it isn't bad once you get the hang of it. The controls reminded me a bit of Time Pilot on my Commodore 64. Once you get used to the game you realize that it requires some strategic thinking. Half the trophies can be obtained just by playing through the game on any difficulty. I have three so far.

My biggest issue is that when they added a difficulty patch all they did was give you more lives. That would be like PJ Monsters just giving you more sheep. I would have preferred they toned down the actual difficulty. I mean seeking missiles that find you unless you run behind another enemy ship are a bit ridiculous. My best defensive strategy should not be to run around a corner.

I do like the fighting though. However, I would be upset if I had paid more that $4.99.

I didn't realize that new PSN game, Brain Challenge has trophies. Has anyone played it yet?
So is this like Brain Age on the DS? Will it help me hold off Alzheimer's?

As you can see I too am curious.

And you know, I need to go back into PJ Monsters, PJ Eden, Buzz and Warhawk. I have barely touched their trophies while games like LittleBigPlanet have sucked me in and I have not touched those games in a while. I already have nearly all the LBP trophies.

Blast Factor is blasting me towards lvl 5. It took me 2 hours to get the 10 lives and 3 specimens without dying. Working on the survive without repulsor or dying and its freakin hard lol.

I'm actually doing a trophy run at the moment trying to earn as many trophies I can over the holiday break (about 2 and a half months remaining). Am up to level 5 so far and have about 3 trophies left in uncharted then will be working on finishing off ferrari challenge. After that have bioshock, wipeout hd, resistance 2, motorstorm 2, gta4, burnout paradise and fallout 3 when that gets updated.

You have your work cut out for you! Tips:

BioShock -Not played PS3 version
Wipeout HD - Probably the hardest game to get platinum, I'm at about 35%...
R2 - Haven't played yet, but I hear they are easy except 10,000 kills online which is time consuming
M2: Easy but very time consuming
GTA4: haven't gone online but single player is easy (but time consuming...)
BP: Unquestionably the easiest game to get trophies, but one bronze trophy requires a USB camera and since I don't have one I don't have platinum for it :grumpy:

cheers for the tips. Yeah the wipeout ones and I think gta4 (online ones anyway) are going to be hardest for me. I forgot to add warhawk that I would like to try earn some trophies. I doubt I will be able to get platinum in all the games I'm playing through though. Wipeout for instance I'm simply not good enough at it.
