VCRC vintage & low power :: Sunday 3pm GMT / 10am US EST

I race with the drivers list up, it's off to the side and not really in the way, so I know who's immediately in front and behind.

Not if it's a lapped car, which has been an issue in a few of the races here on shorter tracks. That's pretty much the main reason I want to have names above the cars, lapped cars need to be handled differently than lead lap cars. Without the name above and the drivers list on the side I would have no way of knowing if I'm battling for position or if I'm getting lapped/lapping somebody.

But yes, that's just my preference and I'm not saying everyone should follow suit. Just my $.02 USD.

EDIT: I will say that the other group I race with as well as the group I hosted ended up doing away with the automated qualifier for other reasons. Firstly, if someone is a few minutes late they can't join in if the qualifier has already begun. Second, we had issues with very long (well over 60 seconds) black loading screens before the qualifier and the race loaded up. Finally, we had several instances where the game did not put us on the starting grid in the order we finished the qualifier. Therefore we reverted back to doing qualifying the way we did in GT5 by resetting the track and having a 10 minute practice session to determine the grid.

Yeah, you might have a lap where you get blocked by a slow/spinning car and somebody might catch a slight draft off another car (<---not nearly as much a concern with "real" slipstream") but we all felt those were much lesser evils than having someone miss the race, or having the black screen of death, or having a screwed up starting grid

Yeah this is certainly a head scratcher. :ouch: :grumpy:

Someone list the pros & cons of qualifier race alone, qualifier race together, and qualifying without the qualifier.

I would, but I can't put down the tissues long enough to type out a message longer than this one... let alone have the brain energy at the moment to think of them all.

Race alone
Pros: 1) no danger of contact of other drivers
2) no drivers that can get stuck ahead or behind you
3) no need to worry about drafting
Cons: 1) annoying and distracting lines that can block sections of the track
2) can't join after qualifier started
3) getting dc'd means you can't race
4) double chance for black screen of death
5) occasional misplacement when it comes to race time
Race together
Pros: 1) no distracting lines
Cons: 1) danger of collisions
2) danger of being held up by slower cars
3) drafting
4) can't join after qualifier begins
5) can't join race if dc'd
6) double chance for black screen
7) sometimes placed in incorrect position
Practice mode
Pros: 1) can join late and still race
2) can still join if dc'd
3) only one chance for black screen
4) always put in correct position
5) no distracting lines
Cons: 1) danger of collisions
2) danger of traffic
3) drafting
Again if you come up with anything else let me know.

Pros: 1) no danger of contact of other drivers
2) no drivers that can get stuck ahead or behind you
3) no need to worry about drafting
4) it is more difficult to copy someone's line in order to get an advantage
Cons: 1) annoying and distracting lines that can block sections of the track
2) faster lines can still somewhat be imitated

Cons: 1) danger of collisions

3) drafting
4) the ability to imitate someone's line
Just a basic outline of what I could come up with. I'm sure there are more things I could add so if you guys come up with anything else I could add just tell me and I will add it.

Other cons to both of those are:
- if someone is a few minutes late they can't join if the qualifier has begun
- if someone gets DC'd during the qualifier but rejoins the room before the race starts they can't jump in
- doubles the opportunities for a black screen of death
- sometimes you aren't started in the position you qualified in

Qualifying in practice mode, not using the qualifier setting
Pros: 1) People can still join if they enter the room after qualifying has begun
2) If someone gets DC'd they can still jump back in if they re-enter in time
3) Only one chance for the black screen of death
4) So far it seems to always start you in the correct order
5) No ghost lines
Cons: 1) danger of collisions
2) danger of being held up by traffic
3) drafting (minimized by using "real" slipstream)

I don't see imitating someone's line as a con, learning from faster drivers is what makes us all better and makes the racing closer. 👍

A reminder for North Americans that the race will be at 11am EDT today instead of the usual 10am. I'll have the room open about 20-30 minutes early for practice.

When does Europe switch time?

I'm sorry I had to leave, it was taking way too long to start and it would've been way past the time I needed to get to bed after it ended (Would've been around 1am).

Sorry about the visibility problems guys, not sure what else we can do to fix them. It was a good race eventually, nice to see @Johnnypenso on track again. 👍

Here's what I meant by being able to see the ghost lines on my side screens during the race. :odd:

Good racing today:) Could only see 4 people, during the race. Kingklingeling, johnnypenso, GTsail were missing. Don't know what caused this:guilty:

Thanks for the invite Brandon, I had just popped on for an hour to see if I could find an Open Lobby on street tires and there you were! I see the old troubles with online are still there:mad: I could see everyone the first time around. The next couple of times I lost a couple each time. If they ever fix this game there won't be anyone left!

I haven't had a chance to test any cars for this weekend, so I'm open to suggestions. I will have time this evening to get some cars on track and make a selection. The last few races we've had a German car, 'Murican car, Italian car and a Japanese car, so I think we're maybe do for a British or French car? Not that we have to stick to a pattern or anything, just saying. :P

That would be fun but the midget in this game is from the 90's so I don't know. But then again it is low power so it could work. I think we would want to find other low power cars. I don't think any of us could take driving this slow car around for 1 race that's gonna last an hour. We may want to do sprint races instead.

Yes, I have a hard time racing the super slow cars that can't accelerate or overtake.......or that slow down when they encounter a slight incline or a mild breeze. They're fun occasionally for a hoot but not exactly my cup of tea.

I've eye-balled the Marcos but never driven it, I'll give it a go this evening.

Perhaps the karmann ghia. I think we could do 1 race in that. The ghia I remember being great fun

We just did a German car this past Sunday so I'd like to find a different one if possible.

Lotus Europa Special '72? At Brands GP or Silverstone?

I gave it a go at Silverstone on CS, it's a bit hairy but if nobody objects we can do it. I'll need to practice a bit, I'm not too good with MR's but enjoy a challenge. It might be a little more manageable on SH.

I haven't given it a go in a long, it just seemed appropriate. Not exactly a hot shoe with MRs myself, but I remember it as being quite manageable. There's also the '68 Europa S2 which has rather less power -- can't remember what the handling is like on that one.

We used the s2 in the zero cup a few weeks back and it's handling is excellent. It obviously has oversteer but it is manageable and it drives where you point the wheel.

The 68 does feel a bit lazy though and the gearbox isn't optimal. The 72 has enough more grunt to be a bit more drive able, it's a handful but can be tamed. I drove a RUF RGT right afterwards on the same track and it felt rather easy after the Europa.

So, yeah, let's go ahead and do the Europa '72 at Silverstone GP. I'm going to be away from the PS3 but if anyone has time to test I'd like a couple opinions on whether CS or SH would be better. I want to be sure everyone feels confident going two-wide into a turn with it. It may be fun on CS but I think the racing would probably be better overall on SH. 👍
