Wild Hogs - Went to the Cinema for my free film last weekend, decided on Wild Hogs mainly because I didn't want to see in a room for 90 mins watching Mr. Bean drool. So I sat down not really expecting too much..

..Thank god that was my attitude, the film never really had a real story to it, so 4 men go out on their bikes to revive their lives. Okay, great.. Soo... Thats it? There was really only one moment that I laughed at (SPOILER) which was the gay Highway Officer (Played by John C McGinely, probably steals the whole show) in the camp scene:

"So, what do we have here... 4 Accounts of indecent exposure, 2 Accounts of ludacris(sp?) idiocy and... 1 Account of pure jealousy.."(END SPOILER)

Otherwise it was a pretty bland, unsuprisngly middle aged film. John Travolta really needs to go back to his scientology class as he is no way a comedy actor.

Rating: 4/10 - I really dunno how this has reached #1 in the US, you guys are crazy!

Aww, I like the live acting inclusion
If you want to see a good meshing of animation and live action I suggest either Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Cool World. Of course, this is not a commentary on the overall quality of these films, even though I do love Roger Rabbit (that may be nostalgia).

In Happy Feet it had no purpose and the way it was done did not compliment the animation at all. It all seems to suddenly cancel out the fantasy, talking, intelligent animal world when all of a sudden we are viewing it all from the human perspective and the penguins just make squawking noises. I mean, they acted as if they stumbled upon March of the Penguins and not some CGI. The sudden jolt in appearance and the quick shift in POV just drew me out of the story. Fortunately for Disney their target audience only cares that there were cute dancing penguins.

And I have left out the dancing penguin = Please take me back home. And then multiple dancing penguins = Please stop polluting and fishing the ocean waters because you are killing us off. For a second I thought Lassie and Flipper might show up.

Really, it was a fun and cute kids movie that I was enjoying until the last 30 minutes, but then it went from funny to serious (read:boring) quicker than Adam Sandler and the whole POV got changed. I feel that those two things combined also made it switch target audience (kids to adults), which is a no-no in story telling.

Because every middle-aged person that is tired of gross-out comedies and bloody horror flicks went to see it.

Well I suppose but theres plenty a film out for that age group right now such as Zodiac or Sunshine..

I really don't quite know how Wild Hogs beat both of them.

Recently, I watched...

Cocaine Cowboys : A documentary movie clocking in at almost 2 hours, it gives viewers the inside story of the cocaine drug trade during the 70's and 80's in Miami as told by three men who made it all happen. IMO, it was very interesting if you're into topics like this. However there are some slighly disturbing images of dead bodies and such, but it's not too extreme to the extent that you might want to puke!
Rating : 8.0/10

The Epic Movie : Rubbish...
Rating : 2.0/10

You can't turn on the TV or open a magazine/newspaper without seeing an ad for Wild Hogs. The other two weren't so much. Combine that with all the people I've heard say, "I 'll see anything with William H Macy," and you have a huge audience base.

Plus, sometimes a feel-good comedy just makes people happy and sounds better than the true story of a serial killer, who was never captured, or the sun dying and we will all go with it, no matter what the production quality may be.

It's like they say in Singin' in the Rain, "Make them laugh." We can ask all day why Ya Ya Sisterhood and Big Fat Greek Wedding did so well, but the answer comes down to an underserved audience. It's the same reason why Space Cowboys got nearly $129 million at the box office worldwide. That age group is rarely targetted and when they are targetted they will rush out to see it when they usually never go to see movies.

You should have watched Mr Bean's holliday, at least it had Emma De Caunes in it.

Well fair enough FK but I'm still sticking to my rating of 4/10. :D
That's fine with me. I haven't seen it and can't judge. I'm just telling you why Americans managed to keep it at number one for two weeks in a row.

I saw A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy yesterday. It wasnt British enough and the main actor was pants but still an ok movie 6.5/10

I thought Ford Perfect looked farmiliar, didnt know he was Mos Def :-0

Saw Grindhouse a week ago, with low initial expectations. I came away pleasantly surprised.

Planet Terror - 7/10
I was never into slasher flicks, so I wasn't high on the spoof of a slasher flick. Still it was very entertaining. Very silly, but very fun.

Death Proof - 8/10
Filled with typical Tarantino blabber, slow at times, but on the whole a lot of fun to watch. The future classic car chase was fantastic, reminding us that bad guys always drive black Chargers.

On the whole: 8.5/10
It really takes you out of your reality and makes you believe, or rather want to believe, you're watching it at some small-town '70s dive. I'm looking forward to Hobo With a Shotgun. :D

Employee of The Month (04, Matt Dillon) 6/10 Well, it was like your typical Ocean's Insert # movie. Not much else to say.

Tremors 2 - 5/10 Not as fun, clever or original as the first. Like sequels ever are? Well, Aliens was. This one was so boring in parts, I couldn't help myself FF through it.

X Files Movie - 7/10 I loved the series but I never watched this movie, until now. Not bad, but a bit too late to watch it. The series was fun and exciting but now seems silly. This movie was OK, but was too similar to a regular episode.

I gotta go see the Grindhouse. I'm big on Tarantino films(Robert's, too).

I have the first Tremors on DVD. Is that considered a B-Movie? I think it's borderline, but I also loved the first one. The "2" I don't remember being that bad, but sequels after that were punishingly bad.

I have the X-Files, too. I like it. Most of the movie is just like the TV Series(which might not be a bad thing...), but the ending was pretty epic, I thought. :)

I just saw OldBoy for the 1st time... omg. what a disturbing movie. very good acting overall...

That would be The Protector. That has one of the craziest unedited fight scenes ever:

The Number 23 isn't really the kind of movie I would watch, but the story seemed intriguing.

I have a fair few to add here as i forgot my password & couldnt be bothered to re-do it. But here is what i can remember.

Mr Bean Holiday - Hilarious in parts, boring as hell in parts. 5/10

Wild Hogs - Suprisingly good, i was kind of dragged into seeing this by the misses. But i liked it, i get why some people don't its quite politiclly inccorect. But i dont care, i laughed alot. 7/10

Shooter - I loved this film. Its nothing more than a jumped up STV Seagal or Van Damme film. But having Mark Whalberg & a descent director makes all the difference. 8/10

Fracture - Good, but not great. I just didn't really see the point. We know he did it, so where is there for the film to go. Enjoyable, but nothing more. 7/10

Perfect Strangers - I cant remember anything about this, other than it having some good twists & that i'd give it 6/10

Evil Aliens - This film was pretty damn boring for almost an hour. But then in the last 30 mins, it suddently picked up. Those 30 mins are quite possibly the most entertaining 30 mins of cinema i've ever seen. It's a brit flick & you can tell. You never get a Hollywood film made like this. Yes it's technically terrible, but they know that. Also whoever made it, clearly liked Dog Soldiers, lots of little hints/homages.
7/10 overall.

The Good Shepherd

As one of the bigger movies of 2006, I had generally felt out of the loop by not seeing this one. Directed by Robert DiNero, it tells the story of the foundation of the American Central Intelligence Agency through one of its primary leaders. Weaving through a complicated web of story threads of a wide-arrangement of characters and double-speak from the pre-war years of 1939 and 1940 up until the few weeks after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the storied history of the CIA seems to be a lot more complicated than we all thought.

I have to say, I enjoyed the movie, but it certainly isn't for everyone. Being that I have a great amount of interest in American history (in all of its forms) from 1939-1969, the movie was right up my alley. But that being said, there were large parts of the movie that I just didn't understand. As noted, much of the movie is told through double-speak, an acquired trait of American Intelligence services from the British during WWII, and for the most part, it flew right over my head. In many instances, I felt as though I had to be lead through the movie with later obvious hints, just to keep everyone on the same page.

But, that being said, the story was still excellent, the acting was top-notch, and the cinematography is what you would expect of a great movie. Its worth a rental at the very least, just to say that you had seen it, but when it comes to an all-out purchase, it just isn't worth it.

Overall, 8 out of 10

I watched that and I had trouble following most of it. The acting was great, but unless you know what it's going on about, for the most part it's all going to go way over your head. Personally, I wouldn't watch it again.

I think I gave that one a "A" or "A+". 👍

Deja Vu - I've been looking forward to this one. After I got home with the rental, I took one look at the cover, almost started crying when I saw Bruckheimer's name on it. I thought it was going to be SO bad. He's produced some of the worst Hollywood garbage I've ever witnessed............... this one wasn't that bad though.

Acting was average at best, you almost want to shake your head at the storyline, but considering, and for what it is, I thought they barely saved it. Sci-fi element does spice up this Denzel Washington action flick that you've seen about a million times. I'd say "C"

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen - I hadn't seen this in a decade! I had no idea Robin Williams or Uma Thurman(hottest I've ever seen her) or Sting made appearance in this film, or that little girl was Sarah Polley from "Dawn of the Dead" remake. 👍👍

It really confirmed the greatness of Terry Gilliam for me, personally. I wish he'd make another film soon(that's better than the Brothers Grimm). "A-"

We watched "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" and "Running Scared". I enjoyed both.

Oh yeah, we also watched "The Number 23" friday on the theater, nice story, a bit too twisty, but nice.

The Sentinel (7.5/10): It was an interesting whodunit that was well done, but it wasn't too spectacular. It is agood for a watch, but not one I woudl buy. And Eva Longoria's character could have been completely left out of the film and we wouldn't have noticed. But put her in the film and everyone noticed, but only because it was Eva Longoria, not because she has any kind of stellar acting ability.

Flags of our Fathers

I've been on the 'movies I should have seen last year' event this week, and I've reached another biggie from 2006, Clint Eastwood's Flags of our Fathers. Being a pretty big history buff, one by which takes great interest in World War II and the events that occurred, I have to say that I was expecting a lot from this movie. Tie that in with the overwhelmingly positive press and the Academy Award nominations, and I thought I was guaranteed a good time.

To put it in simple terms, its a good movie that is worth watching, but it is by far not one of my favorite WWII movies. Granted, this is a story worth telling (the story of the men who raised the American flag over Iwo Jiima), and indeed paints a very different picture from what most Americans care to think about these men, but the story just seemed so... Well, its hard to explain.

Maybe it is because I grew up in a classically American household, watching Tora! Tora! Tora! on Memorial Day and the like, or maybe its because my generation has learned of WWII through games like Call of Duty, but this movie just didn't feel like the WWII Epic that it was played out to be.

...But I'm not saying its a bad movie. It just wasn't what I was expecting. The Band of Brothers series remains as one of my favorites when it comes to WWII storytelling, and as far as feature-films are concerned, Saving Private Ryan and Sahara are two of my favorites. Flags of our Fathers plays out as a good story with a good lesson at the end, and given that it is a movie that many Americans should see to better understand the sacrifices that were made for us, I just cannot give it a resoundingly good review...

Flags of our Fathers, 8.0 out of 10

I agree with that review, though I still want to see Letters From Iwo Jima. I've heared more positive things about that film.

Watched "North Country" last night. I'm not a big fan of Woody Harrelson but I liked his acting on this one, I also liked Sean Bean's part. I wasn't expecting much of this movie (actually I didn't even know what it was about, my gf rented it) and overall I enjoyed it, although it could've been better.

I saw Spidey 3 tonight. I wasn't particularly impressed or entertained. There was so much crammed into the 2+ hours. 3 different baddies, 2 romances. It was way too unfocussed, they could have given half the content the whole film and it would have flowed much better instead of seeming slightly cut and pasted together. And Spidey goes emo? I cringed.

Tora Tora Tora is a great WWII film. I also feel the same way about the Flags of Our Fathers. Good rental, but I will not be buying a copy. And I haven't seen the Letters From Iwo Jima either. I'll see it as soon as it's out on DVD.

Also agreed on Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. Those two DVDs to me are the best WWII films of all time. No, best war films of all time. 👍
