Chorda,

Nice set of rules and pictures.

I'm not sure, but one carwidth might be too close spacing. I assume that most drive in bumber mode. Not sure about the view angle, but it might create a to close spacing between cars.

Anyhow, we still have a preseason race to test. We can run it with these set of starting rules and still have time for some tweaks before season start.

In retrospect, its good that we had the issues at the start at Indy Road. It triggerd the starting procedure discussion which enabled us to arrive to much clearer set of rules.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but a rolling start is aiming for roughly the same spacing between the cars as there would have been were they in their grid boxes. Except that the cars are moving at the time.

You can see from the videos above that there's quite a large variation in the spacing in the real races. Some of the cars are very close, but a lot of them seem to be 2~3 car lengths away from each other, and some of them are much more than that even.

Now, I wasn't at the Indy race. But comparing those photos to what I'm seeing in the videos above, I don't see how anyone was too far behind anyone else. Taking the whole online lag thing into consideration, a lot of people were far too close.

I'll repeat what I've said before, that the majority of our problems are caused by people being too eager to overtake. Chill out, let the start get over with and then once you're halfway through the first lap and the cars have sorted themselves neatly into a line, THEN is the time to attack.

During the race is not the time to be making judgement calls on other people's driving. It's an emotional time and it's very difficult to be unbiased. Complain afterwards if you think someone has made a mistake. Don't take matters into your own hands during a race.

As far as the start goes, the only thing I think needs clarification is when it's OK to assume that someone ahead of you has passed out and you can overtake them PRIOR to the start line. The speed limit is 90kmh/55mph. I'd suggest that if the speed of the car ahead of you drops below 60kph/35mph on the start straight, then something serious has probably happened and you're free to pass. Otherwise, suck it up and wait for the start line. This has the advantage of being nice and easy for the stewards to judge afterwards. There needs to be a little leeway on the speed so that people can adjust their position, but I think that should be enough.

Well, what I think is most important during the start is that we keep some distance. If we go by my suggestion, it will be about 3 car leanghts between cars in the same lane, and about one breadthway apart between should be more than enough.

Do I have to remind you that this system will also make the chaos in turn 1 less risky. That is actually one of the biggest upsides with this suggestion if you ask me. We need to have some kind of guidlines for drivers to relate to during startprocedure, and what could be more simple then make sure that you can se the whole car in front of you?

I agree with Imari that everything is going to be just fine if drivers just cooled down a bit during the start. But sadly, that is not the case as it looks for now, and with the Indy discussion in mind, I really think that we should have some guidelines for the startprcedure.

We clearly need to do something about this issue, and at the moment this is the only concrete solution we got.

Let's do as Sail IC suggested and try this system on La Sarthe this Friday and take a decision from there. 👍

And about the view drivers are using. I agree that it could be an issue. If some drivers use roof or chase view, they will stay much closer to the car in front than drivers who use cockpit/bumper view. But my seggestion is with bumper/cockpit view in mind. If someone use another view, it will be on him to make sure he is not to close. But if you use roof/chase view, you will be able to see the other cars positions in a better perspective and can relate to that when positioning your car.....

I don't think anyone uses the roof or chase view dough...

If it's necessary to use a certain view to line up, then people can use that view during formation and then switch when they get the green light. It's a matter of hitting SELECT a couple of times to get to whatever view you prefer for racing, hardly a big deal.

Yep.
Just like a F1 driver has to press a thousand buttons.
We only have to press one, so not a problem.

If you think corda's proposal is waaaay to complicated. In the essence, its isn't. Here is a KISS version (Keep It Simple Stupid) for you.

Poleman.
- Drive at a very even 45 mph speed. Inside lane. Floor it as close to the startingline as possible.

2nd.
- Take the outside lane. One free car should fit between lanes. Make sure you always see the poleman whole car and floor it when he goes.

The rest.
- Follow the car infont of you in a VERY straight line
- Make sure you see the WHOLE car of the guy to the side/front all the time
- Keep an even speed
- Floor it when you see the guy to the side/front goes.
- IMPORTANT. Don't go when you see the car in front of you go. Wait until the car to the side/front go, then you floor it.

Chorda,
I think above catches all things most need to know. Feel free to modify, but don't add details. Remember, its a KISS version.

This. If done correctly you probably shouldn't be passing anyone on the start straight, unless it's really long and you take serious advantage of the draft. Everyone should arrive at the first corner in the same order as they started.

Of course, then everyone will try to outbrake each other and crash, but that's a different problem.

Got a question, maybe stated mid thread but didn't see it on page1.

What is the time progression going to be set to?

Did a little math. 24hr x 60 min = 1440 min

we race for 1.5hrs or 90 minutes. Divide 24hr min by race min. That should give us 16. So for every real time minute 16 game time passes. This should yield a full 24 hr cycle.

Is the time progression set up like I am thinking?

What number we using here and what time are we starting in settings?

👍

When running in bonnet/hood/chase view, how do you keep track of whats happening behind you. When I pull it up, there are no mirrors. The reason I changed from cockpit to bumper is that I wanted that big fat mirror.

Or maybe you guys are so fast so what happens behind you is a none issue.

/\ Using the map would be my guess. I set mine at scale one so when door to door it is evident when clear.

I need some feedback about my suggeston from you guys... Part, beacause I wonder what you guys think about it, and part because if we are going to try this method this friday, everybody needs to know about the prcedure. Help me out. 👍

I like it. It's not that hard to understand and it's nothing innovative. It's just common sense and sensible. If people kept a speed of 44-46 mph all the way around we wouldn't have this problem. The thing is... when someone sees that there is a gap between them and the car in front, they put their foot down to 50+ mph. What they should do is slowly increase their speed a few mph over 45 to slowly and smoothly catch the cars up in front.

Obviously it's not always someone's fault that a gap occurs because it's tough to keep average speeds around corners and still keep the lanes consistent.

I'm not entirely sure about there being no qualifying though. :dunce:

Great! 👍

Yes, but I guess Masi has a good reason for not doing a quali. Probably because we don't need to split the cars up in D1 and D2 since we will keep GT500's and GT300's in different races. We almost never fill out 16 spots during the preseason, so my guess is that Masi think it's a waste of time, and not really that important since it's a preseason race.

I'd like to put up another mandatory roll call.

Copy and add you name if you fully understand the startprocedure posted.

Right. So we will continue with live qualifying sessions when the season begins?
