God, something went horribly wrong reconstructing that car, looks like a parody or cartoon version, not just the detailing but some fundamental design cues are completely wrong basing it on the photo of the original which looks quite pretty in fact.

I can comprehend the Mercedes and BMW concepts, and I'll even let the Firesweep pass, but the 968? come on, dude.

I know! I thought it was a concept 'till I looked it up on Flickr images. Tons! I kind of feel a bit silly 'discovering' a well known car. :dunce:

I had heard of it's predecessors, but this was new. I'm not sure if I like it yet, it's a bit bland, and the front looks a bit iffy, in my opinion.

Most people know the Boss 429 better than the 968, and only 1,800 or so were built.

Topped by the '71 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda convertible ... only 11 were built. :sly:

* 7 sold domestically
* 2 sold into Canada
* 2 were sold into England
* 10 of the original 11 are accounted for by the Chrysler Registry. The 11th is rumoured to have been crushed sometime in the mid 70's.
* Out of the 11 ... 7 of them were automatic, the other 4 were 4 spd. manual.

This one ... is heading to Barrett Jackson 2013. It will bring a pretty penny or two.

There's one of those Cuda convertibles around here. It's red with the big "Hemi" decal on the sides. Has the shaker hood and everything. Not sure if it's a '71 but it has the same body style. Probably a replica.

I can beat that. 1970 Boss 429 Lawman Drag Pack. Only 2 buillt, one was wrecked. Only one left. It was sold at auction in 2003 in mint condition.

1 exists, but they build them on request for about 600.000€

If I only had the money :( this car is SICK!

Here. A bit less known Porsche.

omfg really? The 914 is practically general culture.

I think they all have been shipped to or build in the Americas, because in my life, I have seen 2.

I've seen it more than 2 times but I'll admit it's a pretty rare sight (it also looks much better in the flesh) but I wouldn't call it obscure.
There are plenty of obscure variants though.

I knew of this one, seems they experimented with different type of lights (bit of an Opel Manta style).

I also saw this Frua-designed variant before.

And this Albrecht Goertz (who also designed the BMW 507/Toyota 2000GT and Datsun 240Z for example) designed example.

This example by the French coachbuilder Heuliez called Murene was new to me though.

To be fair, I didn't know the 968 was its own thing. For the longest time I thought it was just a variation of the 928. I didn't know it was actually a separate model built from the 944 until I got one of those IMP brochure things when I was 12 years old.

Speaking of the 928, and obscure Porsches in general, think this one is largely unknown.
It's a shooting brake version of the 928 dubbed 942 and only one was build in 1984 as a 75th birthday present to Ferry Porsche (for his personal transport).
It already included some styling elements which were integrated in the 928 facelift a few years later (rear lights, bumpers) but it has its own uniquely styled front lights (which remind me a bit of those used on the 968 but more bubble-shaped).

The side-profile makes it look even more like an AMC Pacer though (which in fact was an inspiration for the original 928 even though that may appear strange now).

But here's a Rotary Corvette concept, which you can read more about here:

There's another smaller rotary-engined (and mid-engined) Corvette prototype as well, it was build in 1973 on a Porsche 914 chassis (we've come full circle ;)) and was aimed to be a competitor for the Dino 246GT.

It still survives today and I think the current owner actually made it driveable (which it wasn't) by using a rotary-engine from an RX-7 if I'm correct.

Here's a funny little sports car - W3 Triposto, based on Porsche 911.

I don't know why but I think it looks absolutely great! And I don't even like cars of this type.

I've seen that very car in the flesh last year during the F1 festivities in Montreal, the company that builds those is located not too far from there actually. No idea if they're actually building any just yet, but I recall they had prototypes made out of 928s some 10-15 years ago.
