LLNNo Manual Gearbox for the G8 GT
Since the Pontiac G8’s debut, it has long been rumored the 2009 model year would bring the sought-after option of a manual gearbox for buyers of the large sedan. On Friday, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz seemingly confirmed this, but today Pontiac Communication Director Debbie Frakes struck down the claims, saying only the GXP edition will get a six-speed Tremec transmission.
Last week, Mr. Lutz was quoted as saying the G8 GT — which can only be ordered with a six-speed automatic — would have a gain a stick shift on its options sheet for the coming model year. It’s not known if Mr. Lutz simply misspoke, or if he was misquoted.
Either way, PR boss Frakes made it clear in an email to Pontiac enthusiast community G8 Nation that only the GXP model will have a manual gearbox. “We currently have no plans to offer the Tremec on any other G8 model, although it might be an option we could consider in the future,” she told Leftlane.
It’s not secret the 402 horsepower GXP will have the option of a manual transmission, so we haven’t really gleaned anything new from all this, other than to say most G8 buyers will definitely be stuck with an automatic for the foreseeable future.
AutoblogCorrection: Pontiac G8 GT will NOT have an optional 6-speed stick
Last week, we linked to a CarDomain piece about a lunch that gang had with GM's Bob Lutz. One of their topics of conversation with the product czar was manual transmissions, and it was reported that the '09 Pontiac G8 GT would be offered with an optional Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. This was certainly welcome news, both to us and readers. Unfortunately, it turns out that this information was, in fact, too good to be true. Pontiac's Jim Hopson dropped us a note this morning to clarify. In it, he writes, "We currently have no plans to offer the Tremec on any other G8 model (including the GT mentioned in the article), although it might be an option we could consider in the future." That's a bummer, and there you have it: The only way you'll be able to get a manual in the Pontiac G8 is if you pony up for the über-caliente GXP performance variant when it arrives later this year. Jim's email, in its entirety, is pasted after the jump.
From Pontiac:
Alex,
I read with interest your recent posting regarding your discussion with Bob Lutz. You correctly noted that we are ditching the center stack gauge cluster on the 2009 G8, plus we are adding XM satellite radio as standard equipment. You'll also note that the G8 price increase Mr. Lutz mentioned is consistent with other 2009 GM models as announced yesterday.
However, there may have been some miscommunication about the availability of the six-speed Tremec manual transmission on the G8. At this time, the manual tranny will only be available as an option on the G8 GXP model that will be released very late this year. We currently have no plans to offer the Tremec on any other G8 model (including the GT mentioned in the article), although it might be an option we could consider in the future.
I apologize for any confusion that the G8 model nomenclature (GT vs GXP) may have caused, but I wanted to ensure you had the correct information. Please let me know if I can provide any additional clarification or assistance.

Manager, Pontiac Communication
GM is counting on V6 equipped Camaros to account for the bulk of its sales but theres talk of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine among the ranks as well the usual V8 lineup. Latest reports suggest that the flagship Camaro SS will be powered by GMs 6.2L LS8 small block V8 with a supercharger in tow.
The LS8 engine features an intercooler integrated into the intake manifold and has been designed to fit in the new Zeta platform that underpins cars like the upcoming Camaro as well as the current Pontiac G8.
According to The Detroit News, the engine will develop up to 500hp in the Camaro and will ensure that the 2010 model is the fastest production Camaro ever.
GM originally planned to use the engine in several of its SUV models including the Denali but was forced to abandon those plans due to looming CAFE regulations. Instead, the potent engine will be reserved for limited production performance models like a range-topping Camaro as well as a possible G8 flagship.
-> Wow, it doesn't look too much different than the upcoming 'Z28', vaguely done. In fact, it looks more than the V6 model.
EDIT-> ...
EPIC FAIL
*Articles on transmission options*
^ This is stupid on GM's part, I thought this is thier flagship sedan. Now its become a boring mobile. They should've offer it as an option AT LEAST. Where is the fun GM? You guys failed me once again! What a dissapointment!

Autoblog GreenWith gas over $4, GM reportedly kills plans for 500hp Camaro Z/28
Chevrolet will unveiling the production version of the new Camaro sometime later this summer, but high gas prices appear to have killed plans for at least one of the anticipated models. The Camaro lineup was to have been topped off by a Z/28 model powered by a 500+ hp supercharged V8. With the national average price of gasoline at $4.16 last week, the prospects for an LS8 powered super-Camaro looked bad. Instead the Camaro will be topped off with a 400 hp SS model. Even that one may end up having a limited lifespan if gas prices keep climbing. GM has acknowledged that it is examining alternatives like smaller engines with direct injection and turbocharging. A hybrid version will likely turn up at some point as well.
A 500HP Z/28 doesn't seem like the right combination to me...that's more like a Yenko or COPO model.
Damn, the price of oil and the CAFE requirements are really killing this car.
Autoblog - Production Camaro Details Coming July 22ndWe're admittedly tiring of the Camaro hype machine, but we can't fault the fanboys at 5thgen.org for keeping their pot of excitement on boil. The site threw up a countdown to the announcement of the production Camaro on July 22nd, which apparently will be held at all domestic Chevrolet dealers through a two-hour satellite broadcast. Retailers will be given all the details on the Camaro at that time and according to a source, "real orders for real cars" will begin being accepted.
Team CamaroTo the Many Friends of Camaro:
We know it seems to many of you this day would never arrive, but on Monday, July 21, 2008, at 4:00 PM, EDT, Ed Peper, Chevrolet’s General Manager, and Ed Welburn, GM’s Director of Design, will unveil the details of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. This unveil will be the first step in answering the many questions (or should we say confirming the many rumors) surrounding the new Camaro.
Due to many factors, we are not able to extend an invitation to the entire Camaro community to join us in person for the dual, simultaneous unveilings that will take place in Warren, MI, and Los Angeles, CA.
We understand many of you may be disappointed not being able to see the car “in the flesh” that day (and therefore give you a reason to meet us at Indy in September); therefore, we are arranging a live webcast of the Warren unveiling on the GM Next website.
On Monday, July 21, just before 4:00 PM, EDT, go to http://camaro.gmnext.com and click on the "Camaro webcast" link at the top of the page (the Camaro link goes live July 17) to tune in the unveiling. If you cannot watch the webcast live, no worries, an archive of the broadcast will be available on GMNext.com and Chevy.com/Camaro.
Speaking of Chevy.com/Camaro, the next evolution of the site will also debut late Monday afternoon. The next evolution will include images of the production model, exclusive production animation, and a downloadable PDF file containing specifications on the 2010 Camaro. After the webcast, come on over and see the changes for yourself.
If all your questions are not answered during the reveal, a web-chat on the 2010 Camaro will take place the next day (Tuesday, July 22) at GMNext.com. The chat will start at 9:30 AM, EDT, and will feature experts from Chevrolet Marketing, Design and Engineering.
Since Camaro’s production announcement in August 2006, many people throughout GM have been passionately developing a car worthy of its heritage that features beautiful styling, segment-leading performance, excellent fuel economy and advanced technology. Quite honestly, we can't wait to show you all the work on Monday.
Sincerely,
Team Camaro

JalopnikThis is it. The 2010 Chevy Camaro, revealed in all its glory. According to details we've been told by the folks breaking the embargo, the new Chevy Camaro will come in LS, LT and SS (yes, we know there's a badge there that says "RS") and be available in either 6-speed manual or auto flavors. Under the hood, a 296 HP 3.6-liter V6 or a 416 HP 6.2-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation. And check out that interior looks very muscular to us. Weight? How about 3,747 lb lighter than the Challenger.
