[/ATTACH]RACE driver Paul Weel was airlifted to hospital this morning after a horrendous crash in practice for the Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama.
Weel had a lucky escape in a near carbon-copy of the impact which claimed the life of Mark Porter at the same track two years ago.

He spun his Holden Commodore at Reid Park and was T-boned by the next car on the scene, Chris Pither in a Ford Falcon, as his wreck sat in the middle of the road.

The massive impact destroyed Weel's Commodore and badly damaged the front end of the Team Kiwi car driven by Pither. If both are unable to be repaired it will mean the smallest field in the history of The Great Race, with just 27 cars.

Weel had to be cut from the wreckage of his car but, despite severe pain, was conscious throughout.

HEY,Holdenhsvgtsr.are you 'MUST BE' aussie ex pat,or you just like our fine aussie product"HSV"????? DO TELL:sly:

:ouch: major shunt. I dont think either cars will probably race again ever, unless they go back to the workshop for some major straighting.

Kinda lucky team kiwi hit the rear middle instead of the actual drivers door. Guy at work said hey the black car didnt even swerve. :dunce: my response is you cant swerve while doing near 200k/ph and have locked the brakes. Its a matter of "oh s*** this is going to h-crunch. BTW he drives a Hyundai Excel, so he would not know what 60k/ph looks like. :)

As they crest the hill just before (crash scene)there is REALLY no time for braking:scared:

Dang, that accident just looks nasty. Good to hear that both of the drivers are okay, hopefully both of their cars are repairable for the race. (but I doubt that Weel's car is repairable after that heavy shunt at the rear)

Pither did have the brakes locked up, but would have only washed away approx 20k/ph before impact. He still would have been doing over 180k/ph on impact. In any language Wheels car is FUBAR.

@Muzaffar Musa - Both cars have been withdrawn from the rest of the weekend.

The Top 10 Shootout will be epic, all the major drivers are there.:) I'm banking on Murphy/Richards to get pole, they're consistently there while others disappear then come back again, so they'll be able to pull out a fast lap on the spot easier.
GO HOLDEN!!!!

Saw the crash on the news. We all gasped at the same time. Everything went dead quiet until they announced Weel is ok. Man that's some scary stuff, but it comes with the job

Just watching the crash again. Paul is damn lucky, Pither took out the rear instead of the B-pillar and further forward

Does anyone know a website that has very high definition quality pictures of the Mount Panorama race track? I googled it but ill i get are some odd angles but non give the track the justice.

They don't necessarily even need to have race cars in the pics. I'd rather have a clean shot. I really want some of the "Cutting" "Mountain Straight" "The Chase" and "The Dipper"

Something like this....preferably without "View Images" and a bit bigger.

No picture will ever do Mt Panorama justice, all lens will flatten out the incredible elevation changes of the place.

Paul Radisich (Toll HSV with Rick Kelly) crashed hard head on with a wall in practice, it appears his throttle got stuck. Apparently he has a broken ankle, but otherwise ok.

So far there has been quite a few incidents already and the race is still to come.

*EDIT* Also the heavily damaged Toll car is apparently going to fixed intime for the race tommorrow (will miss the shootout) and another driver is to be announced.

That's a real shame, why couldn't it have been Lowndes instead.:grumpy: I hope Rick can do well in the race, where I assume he will start 10th (if he starts).

Well Toll HSV car 15 (P.Radisich/R.Kelly) car has been withdrawn unfortuantly. :(

Paul Radisich has a broken right ankle and a dislocated left ankle as well as some chest soreness, wish him a quick recovery. :)

*EDIT* just in, Rick Kelly is now going to be driving in car #16 Toll HSV with Paul Dumbrell.

Tander just got #1 so far with a 2.07.296.

And sorry for dragging the convo away from the race for a little while, it's just Holdenboy's comment just a hackle or two up on my back. :)

Re: Accident - That was insanity, almost thought he hit Paul Weel clean on the door at first. And watching the interviews afterwards the TKR driver admitted seeing the yellow flag but not slowing down.

Plus the Top 10 Shootout is about to start.:scared: Poor Radisich, I wonder how long before he can start racing again.

Come on Holden I don't want anyone being injured. It's not a nice thing to break an Ankle thats for sure!:nervous: I understand that your a...'I don't care so long as Holden wins' HUGE FAN, but lol come now it's not very nice to hope anyone crashes!
But yeah tomorrows race should be very interesting, with the prospect of rain to mix things up a bit.:scared:
Anyway may the best driver win!:D:tup:
Rusty*

I'm not hoping for another driver to crash.

Yay! GO TANDER!!!!!
I wish Jason Richards did better though.

Holy jeebus, that is steep. First time I've seen a photo like that of the track before!

TV coverage starts in 10 minutes, three hours to race start. I'm rootin' for Frosty/Richo (Richo being a Kiwi and all... takee that, you Aussies! :P) and Lowndes/Whincup ;)

Just so you know why you were banned....

Each of the Motorsport Forums will have a copy of this thread.

There have been a number of instances where members have written "I hope driver xxx crashes" or worse. I have seen many posts wishing physical harm and even death to be inflicted upon drivers or others involved in motorsport.

This is completely unacceptable

I have already stated this before, in another thread, but clearly the warning fell upon deaf ears, therefore it is being replicated in these threads.

The moderating staff understand that people have their favourites in motorsport, and that they might therefore wish the rivals of their favourites to undergo misfortune. Fair enough, but if we see any crash or physical harm being wished upon any participant in any form of motorsport, then we shall immediately issue an AUP violation infraction.

WEATHER IS GOOD TRACK IS GRIPPIN' UP
Looks a bit ominous for FPV at the moment trying to track down a missfire gremlin.

I was able to find these. They are just like what I'm looking for. Anyone know where i can find more?

Great pics from Motominded, specially the first one which looks from the mountain down to the the chase. This 'is' a graphic example off the change in elevation:)(mountain goat country..lol)

I'm just searching around for more pics to try and show the depth of the track.

Heading up mountain straight.

As for the Radisich accident, he broke his other ankle in 2006, also by smashing head on into the wall, so he's been there before, poor guy. Wish him the best of a quick recovery, he is one of New Zealand's best exports for driving. 👍

I'm on it ! FPV got their car sorted. Look likes TKR will take to the track for the race too, after the big crash on friday.
A few arrests on the mountains. A cop got hit by an oversized sex toy, and the thrower was carted away. And overnight, a resourceful fan hooked up a tv to a portable generator and towed it round the campsite on a trailer, showing porno movies. Alas he was arrested too.
New rules this year too for alcohol. Only one tray allowed in per day per person.
So effectively they limit your drinking over the 3day weekend to 72 cans. spoilsports! :dopey:

I would like to say just before this great race starts that the comments posted leading up to today and the pole results(50/50) show THE passion this race evokes. And with the days leading up to now being eventful to say the least,I'm sure were in for the usual head to head yet unpredictable stouch were used to...Good luck to all drivers...GO HOLDEN...!!!!:sly:
