Interesting to see how these two deal with the pressure. If Lewis continues to outperform Nico, then it's all about how Nico deals with the fact that he's coming second in a car that's one second per lap faster than any other team and possibly more during the race. It would get hugely frustrating for anyone in the position of driving by far the fastest car out there but always being the bridesmaid.

Yeah but this isn't Webber v Vettel territory at least Nico is close somewhat to Lewis, it's just Lewis is that little bit more. I just think Nico is too emotional like we saw from Lewis at times and thus both being in such ways promotes bad driving. Even in the best trim for Nico today, I feel it was still on his mind that Lewis was out there waiting to snatch it a way from him. Surely that is what will continue until he stops thinking that way.

I think Rosberg should be proud of himself. The difference was actually bigger in Practice 2 (the only Practice session where it seemed they were on the same page). Last year, he was a whole second off Hamilton at this track (though he had better luck in the race). He pushed Hamilton very hard, forcing him to work for that pole.

Yes, Nico really needs to calm down. Even considering the slippery conditions, he still looks a bit more nervous behind the wheel than Lewis. He needs to find his happy place to beat Hamilton on Sundays... and perhaps the odd Saturday.

Nico is an good position for the race, as long as he has no issues at the start. Best we could hope for, I guess, seeing as everyone is still so far behind Mercedes. And in slippery conditions on a track where that extra power shouldn't matter as much.

Too bad we never got to see the Vettel-Ricciardo battle play out. Was pretty close in Q1.

And, I can't be the only one happy to see Kimi finally taking the battle to Alonso? Finally? of course, no one can be happy at the pace, overall, of the car.

Also... GP2 comparisons? Hot GP2 qualifying, 1:29.293 pole position. Cold, greasy, slippery F1 qualifying, 1:25.232 pole.

Yup. That's pretty darn close. [/humor]

This little gem from Taki Inoue:

I reckon Massa made a mistake in his lap, he went .4 faster than that in Q2. Great from Bottas though seeing as he pulled almost a whole second out of his Q2 lap. 👍

I still think Bottas is the better driver.

Also @niky I don't think Vettel had much of a shot seeing the Q2 time that DR put in and the lack of running in general all weekend due to bad luck from his car not working.

It's starting to look that way!

RE: Vettel: True, but Q1 gave me hope of seeing some in-team fighting there. That said, with Vettel falling back, that gives Ricciardo a better chance at staying in the hunt.... however slim his chances at a championship may seem given the pace differential to Mercedes.

Only four F1 cars behind the fastest GP2 in qualifying (again, different conditions). What's truly embarrassing, I think, is that they're up to six seconds adrift of the Hamilton's pole position.

Then again, that's why they're called backmarkers...

Clearly Hamilton is not a good driver cause he starts from pole and doesn't have to pass cars, Nico is the better driver obviously cause he has to pass cars. :dopey::sly:

Misses Quali, opens results sees top 3 as expected, sighs. But Grosjean has surprised me, could be a decent fight for 4th, the podium won't change.

Though the top 3 are as expected how is that an issue? At least there was a battle, and Hamilton pulled out P1 last minute which made it fun. Also Bottas and Grosjean showed hidden pace as well as Kimi finally doing well.

I expected Nico to do a decent but not enough of a good job, the only surprise in Quali is Romain. Kimi finally doing well in a crap Ferrari is hardly something to get excited about.

I never said I was excited about Kimi, I'm just telling you your cynicism and missing quali doesn't add up to "another mediocre session". If it did you'd see plenty of that in the comments as of now.

When did I state it is a mediocre season, although It probably will be one, I'm talking about tomorrow and tomorrow I think the podium is all but guaranteed before we start.

Where did I say mediocre season? You just quoted me, and it's clear what it says...and I'm also talking about today and tomorrow. Re-read my post and you'll see.

Can't help thinking that Vettel would only have be P4 if his gearbox hadn't decided to stop working. Ricciardo is making the most of this car and appears to be well on top of it.

'Tough luck' on ol' Vettel, eh? :sly:

Oh read session as season, my mistake. I didn't say it was mediocre, I stated that it was expected and like I said Grosjean aside, hardly a surprise there, the only noticable difference from the previous races is the Force Indias.

Just started watching qually on BBC iPlayer. A very touching tribute to Ayrton Senna to start things off. I think some onion-cutting ninjas have crept into my house. :guilty:

Good - Hamilton and Ricciardo for yet another intra team victory, Bottas and Grosjean for their outright pace, Kimi for finding it finally (was getting worried)

Bad - Maldonado.

In between - all others.

About Massa, this is what he said as quoted by ESPNF1

Felipe Massa (9th): "I am disappointed with my lap today as I lost the rear in Turn 10 after braking, it's nothing to do with the car, it was my mistake. I had been doing really well throughout the rest of the session so feel annoyed I didn't do it when it really mattered. The race is long tomorrow and the car has good potential so we have a lot to do."

So yeah, no change at the front, Mercedes still way ahead and Hamilton still has the edge. Waiting for the excuses from someone though.....

Good showing from Grosjean though and poor again from Ferrari.

Last year Rosberg out-qualified Hamilton so I don't see how he could be a whole second off and still get pole then ;). He was 4.682 seconds slower than his last years pole lap this year so shows how much slower the cars have become.

Got to see Vettel-Ricciardo in Q2 though and Ricciardo was comfortably ahead.

If Pastor Maldonado could have repeated his 2008 GP2 qualifying speed at this track, he would have got into Q3 by finishing 7th in Q2 by being ahead of the likes of Alonso and Button. I'm interested though about race lap speed, how many cars will beat Grosjean's GP2 fastest race lap (1m 29.204s) which he did on lap 5 of GP2 race 2 at this track in 2008. I think there maybe a lot of cars that won't beat that considering Chilton was slower than that in qualifying and he was fastest of the backmarkers.
