They are gonna reveal Kahne's throwback later today ( Fingers crossed its a Terry Labonte throwback)
Terry Labonte didn't drive the 5 car for Hendrick until the mid-90's. I think this Darlington race is supposed to cover the late 70's to early 80's period. I would expect something else.

Lot of teams aren't following the rule, but I can totally see it being Geoff Bodine's All Star Racing car from 1984.

And the 7 wears the Kulwicki tribute much better than the 16 just because it's an independent single car team.

There aren't enough likes in the world for a race that will have a throwback for AK and Davey Allison.

Now, we just need Brad to run the black Rusty Wallace MGD car, Austin Dillon to drive a black GM Goodwrench car, and Kyle Larson to run the Kyle Petty Mello Yello car one more time. Maybe Jeff could drive a throwback Du Pont car, too.

Is Jeff actually running Darlington or still no clue?

The last I saw, Jeff is only definitely not available for this weekend at Michigan. The hope is that Dale Jr will be back soon, if not this weekend.

It would not stun me if we have seen the last of Dale Jr. driving.

Jr. just confirmed he's out for Michigan & Darlington, Bowman for Michigan & Gordon for Darlington

Wasn't Jr scheduled to run a Grey Ghost scheme or something with the likes of Buddy Baker? If so, I wonder if they'll scrap that since Jeff is in the car.

Getting ready to head to MIS in the morning. Camping there with some friends till Sunday after the race. Tis gonna be a great time.
I hope you enjoy it there. I haven't been back since 2011 because my dad got free tickets for the truck race and he refuses to buy NASCAR tickets after the Cup race got moved to Wednesday some years back.

Hendrick charges a small fortune for sponsorship on the 88 car, as he rightly should. The sponsors paying top dollar probably don't want a kid or retread in their car.

Gordon's probably the best choice for a long term (Not full time, but to finish out a season) substitute for the sponsors. What better substitute for the most popular driver then a recently retired legend.

As a Gordon fan it kind of pains me to see him running out there and his chances to win are... well... very low.

He's not there to win. He's there to keep the 88 safe in the top 30, something they may be unsure to trust Bowman with.

Would love to see Jeff win the Southern 500. I've been holding out that he might surprise everyone. Especially since Hendrick hasn't won a race in quite a while this season

He's been doing pretty well.

He's the highest scoring Hendrick driver in points in the last 4 races

So it's not just him not having a chance to win, it's the entire team having a slump

That looks...disappointing.

And just like AK, a small team just won the whole weekend.
Kyle Larson will run a boring yet vaguely late 70's Target livery.
How about no on Austin Dillon doing a classic Intimidator livery, ok.
Jeff doing the rainbow livery one more time would be epic

1. EXTREME bummer for Jr. Time to start prepping for 2017. And queuing the retirement rumors

Love Gordon, but I wish they would have put in Bowman for Darlington instead of Jeff. I know Jeff has way more experience than Alex, but it would have made more sense to put Alex back in to start looking in a new direction if Jr. decides to hang up his helmet instead of putting a retired driver in the car. At the very least, it would give him more time to audition to be the replacement driver should Dale call it quits.

I get the whole Darlington is tough and Jeff knows how to drive there aspect. But at the end of the day, Jeff won't come out of retirement to run full time again given the Fox deal. Now would be the time to put the development driver in the car to see how well he would do at one of the toughest tracks on the schedule. If Alex does well there, chances are he'd do well at most of the places NASCAR runs at. And now would (to me) be the time to make him run there because Hendrick needs to focus on the future and neither Gordon or Jr. are it (as much as it pains me to say the latter being a Jr. fan).

Its moreso to do with keeping the 88 in the top 30, something a experienced Cup driver has a better chance at doing then a still fresh new comer like Bowmen. I acknowledge Alex isn't a bad driver but as no one knows the Hendrick equipment better then Jeff Gordon, his experience is very valuable.

The 88 is hardly in danger of falling out of the top 30 as long as it shows up every week...

The issue I have with Gordon's presence is that unlike Bowman, he has no future. It's actually kinda similar to Elliott Sadler taking up an Xfinity ride year after year and leaving potential younger talents more or less hung out to dry.
