You know what, the more I think about it, I feel like Tony is going to be motivated this weekend. He has nothing to lose, and when he wants to win, he can win. I feel like he may have a legitimate shot. Being the winningest driver there (tied with Biffle), and given the magnitude of the race... I'm sure it will be a brand new chassis, brand new engine, and brand new paint scheme. Obviously I'm thinking very optimistic, but he has shown some spurts of speed during the chase (Battling for the lead early at Martinsville, top 15 last week, a top 10 at Charlotte). Maybe #50 is not totally ruled out. All SHR cars are eliminated from the chase now, so he has nothing to lose and everything to risk.
Even if he finishes 36th, 20 laps down, I still am so so happy to see him win Sonoma, and cannot imagine NASCAR without Tony. But it coped before him and it will cope after him. I don't really care though, because it doesn't matter what he drives, or who he races for, he will always be my #1 Driver, not just in NASCAR, but period. You can name any driver from any discipline - Vettel, Castroneves, Kanaan, Pastrana - Tony will always reserve the number one spot. He is a very big reason why I love motorsports with the passion I do, and with everything he has done for NASCAR, I think a lot of fans would agree. And while I have never met him yet, myself, I have had the honor to watch him win in person, mutiple times, and those moments will always be very special to me. And you can bet that after Homestead finishes I will be eagerly awaiting Tony to release his 2017 schedule, so I can find any channel I can to watch him still.
I know nobody really cares about this post, and certainly nobody asked for it, but I wanted to share, and you can bet there will be a similar one written soon after the checkered flag in Miami. And there will be tears.
