They were apparently lobbying to have the United States pushed back so that people would be more likely to keep watching - otherwise, people would switch off after "E" instead of sticking around until "U".

The IOC are pretty strict about who can advertise during the Olympics to stop companies leeching off the Olympic brand. Most of the ads will be for a handful of approved companies, and programming for the broadcaster. So I doubt NBC would have been able to edit commercials in. They probably swapped the order for the Parade of Nations and maybe cut some of the smaller teams.
Every country was accounted for in the NBC program. But it was all in order of their English names. So countries like the US, UAE, UK were all moved back.

The BBC commentator said that a boxer from Papua New Guinea won the crowd over with his style. Are you sure it was that and not the fact he was fighting a Russian?

Why is basketball even an Olympic sport?

.....

USA has won over Senegal in Women's Basketball 65 Points ahead  ( Largest margin of victory in the team's history )

Why is basketball even an Olympic sport?
To guarantee our country a gold and give the casual Americans (those who only care for the big 3 sports here) a reason to watch the olympics, thus higher viewers and more ad revenue for the us broadcaster.

Big crash in the women road race, the leader fell head first into the concrete on a bend, I really hope she is OK.

That was a scary looking crash :nervous:

It was literally neck snapping. I'm really worried as she wasn't moving afterwards. No word yet.

That course is a killer like we saw yesterday, as the commentators said there is a difference between technical and dangerous!

What a finish in the road race! Didn't expect the riders behind to make that last minute comeback.
It's all about timing and the lone leader didn't have a chance once the chasing pack got within 15 seconds within the last km.

But extremely happy that Van Vleuten is fine and safe.

It has been since before the NBA was founded.
There is no aspiring basketball player who's highest goal in their career is to win Olympic Gold. It's the same with Football, Golf and Tennis.

I'm with Rory McIlroy on this one, these aren't sports that matter in the Olympics.

First time I popped into this thread. That was a great men's basketball game between Croatia and Spain. Close match.

I agree with the sentiment that if the Olympics isn't the peak of a particular sport then there may be less value in including that sport at the Games.
Although I was recently given a hint that there could be an incorrect assumption (that the Olympics isn't the pinnacle of these particular sports), when I heard Andy Murray say that his Olympic Gold was the highlight of his tennis career despite him having also won Wimbledon.

Either way. With basketball, the Olympic tradition goes back further than the newer pinnacle of the sport does. There may be a case to say that it no longer has a place in the Olympics but I think it's a harder case to make than one might assume.
For most of the competing nations (all but USA I would guess), it's probably a very big deal & completely in line with the spirit that this worldwide games strives for.
For example, if the 5 best players from Latvia have trained for their whole lives to try to beat Estonia at the Olympics & vice versa while players from Togo & Fiji have done the same & then they all meet in a huge international competition to try & go as far as they can, the fact that there's also a big money league for some of the professionals doesn't have to dampen the point of the competition.

Plus it creates things like these..
WOW! What a game between Croatia and Spain!!

Edit: I was wrong to mention the USA, they've had terrific rivalry with the USSR in the past, even at a time when the NBA was considered to be the top level.

Well, I do value Olympic basketball as well as the FIBA World Championship. These are true World Championships, unlike when NBA teams are referred to as "World Champions."

I do want to congratulate my fellow USA Women's Basketball team for their rout on Senegal earlier today. GO USA!!!

Today, I watched the women's synchronized 3m springboard, where China's duo of Wu Minxia and some other woman dominated the competition. Italy took silver, and Austrailia bronze.

Currently, I'm watching women's gymnastics, specifically the individual all-around kind. I'm seeing Americans Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and prodigy Simone Biles perform outstanding performances. As of right now, they hold the top three spots for the qualifier, although only two of them can move on to the finals.

I haven't paid any attention to the other disciplines, mostly because I'm looking at the computer screen, and I'm watching the Games on TV.

Novak Djokovic is one set away from being eliminated in the first round of Tennis.

Edit: Its over! Novak Djokovic has been eliminated! 2 huge upsets in Tennis today!

( The other being the Williams sisters losing in doubles )

How do you know this exactly? It allows smaller countries to play against the likes of Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving etc, and for some it is a dream to play against these players. Anyway it doesn't matter if the Olympic Gold has to be the peak of their career because athletes have their own individual goals.

Edit: This is a reaction of a 12 time grand slam winner after losing...

Well, the Murray brothers have been knocked out already who are seeded second.

Great to hear. That was a very scary crash.

Yeah, the finish was excellent. I thought the American rider might have just have been able to just hold on. Got to feel for her being caught by the three chasing so close to the finish line like that.

America has only not gotten Gold once in the Olympics after NBA players were allowed to compete, that being the 2004 ******** where the team was full of only guys who could score and nothing else. Aside from that, no one's really come that close to beating America at it's best

Neymar and his Brazil squad are doing great so far!

0-0 against South Africa and again a 0-0 against Iraq today!
Denmark is leading the group and are the final opponent for Brazil.
