Disappointing for Hamilton? I'd say both McLaren and Ferrari are way off pace... or are they using practice to test out configurations for the race, in an effort to catch up with the super-diffuser crowd?

However most do agree that they should have been banned on safety grounds, given that the core of a TMD is a small but weighty (9kg) weight that is housed in the nose cone. As the nose cone is designed as a detachable component, quite a few people were rightly concerned about the potential of 9kg weights flying around the track at high speed in an accident.

If you put it that way, I guess it makes sense, though I think there would have been ways to make it safer.

i wouldnt say ferrari is off pace. as seen by raikonen in P1 he can easily set a 1.26 time. but i guess tomorrow is the only way to tell.

Ferrari actually does look off the pace. In P1 Rosberg and Nakajima at least were on the harder tyre. Raikkonen was on the soft option.

P2 most of the quickest times from what I saw appeared to all be on softer tyres. I think Ferrari at least has to be quicker than the FI cars but I don't think they are on the pace of Williams or BGP. I did feel as though BGP may have taken it easy a little. I would tip them to beat Williams on raceday.

All I see is the same patterns he followed last year and the year before. Why should I think this one is different when the results are the same?

Because he said so himself that he's not expecting points this weekend.

Nice to see Williams back at the top of the timesheets, even if it is on low fuel.

On the contrary, I LOVE the new look! IMO, F1 cars have never looked better. :)

The one thing that struck me, as pertaining to looks, was how apt now more than ever, the term 'mowing the grass' is. Those front wings are really, really low. Raikkonen was breezing thru the turn 1 infield as if he wanted the gardeners' job, or looking for the most daring braking point for a lights-out, first turn scramble...
I'll be watching the P10, 11, 12 drivers most closely.

On the Five live red button coverage this morning it was said that the power advantage KERS gives off the start line is enough to jump two rows if the cars ahead don't have KERS. That's going to lead to some interesting starts. Turn one might see one or two missing front wings.

Wow, I wake up to Williams topping the times! Very nice. This is going to be one great race if the grid lines up like that on Sunday.

Heh, Sutil faster than both BMW's, Ferrari's and Alonso - someone might be getting some good money. What were Sutil's odds again? Like 200/1?

Edit:
BBC are showing the free practice on their website in full (UK only):

No point, most teams now use J-dampers, which are lighter, safer and just as effective. They just work in a different way.

I disagree, the williams seems faster, putting up faster times with the hards when the Brawns were on softs.

Its still early days, but I think Rosberg will win this race.

JB commented that Brawn are still finding the best setup because Albert Park is very different to Catalunya and Jerez.

Getting up for qualy tomorrow, anyone else? Okay, it's not that early. I think Williams look strong, practice is never a perfect judge, but they are clearly quick.

This is what I like about the season that is starting:

Domenicali said: "One cannot really draw hasty conclusions after just three hours of free practice, but the first signs seem to support what we saw during winter testing. The pecking order that had established itself in recent years seems to have been overturned and we now find ourselves up against different and more numerous rivals."

I'll probably miss it as it will be 3 AM over here. I'll get home at 10:30 PM, very tired. If I go to sleep there's no way I'll wake up for it, and I doubt I can stay awake either...

I plan to have a good sleep tomorrow afternoon though so I'll be good for the race.

Biased, yes I am. Red Bull have been better than expected, although they probably thought Ferrari and Bmw would be in front of them.
Webber, with essentially only one practice session is well on the pace, Vettel is in the mix.

Rosberg, probably the standout on both Soft and Hard tyres.

Braun cars going extemely well, both looking solid and balanced.

They shaved off several tenths of their best time...

Braun GP?

Formula 1 telecast starting in 15 minutes in Australia. I can't wait.:D I'm actually excited about seeing the V8's as well as watching F1 qualy. I haven't really followed the F1 in the off season so I've got no idea who's on the pace. Williams looked strong in practice from what I read?

They are starting what? qualify is at 1:30 EST, not 15 minutes.

They're starting the broadcast of their coverage. It includes the Saturday practice session, a few support races and the actual qualifying. The rest is filler, made up mostly of self-important comentators who like to come across as well-informed but mostly just act like they're reading cue cards. After all, one of the commentators is a former MotoGP rider ...

I've just heard that Richard Branson is likely to sponsor Brawn GP. So the Brawn GP cars may have "virgin" decals come the start of the race.

Yes, Most of the telecast is just filler. Support categories, talking, F1 practice, talking etc.

Actually, it's been confirmed that Virgin are sponsoring Brawn, whoerver, there has been no word as to the extent of the deal. I'm not expecting a race-going livery until Sepang, largely because with all the work that goes into the car, there wouldn't be much time for applying all the decals, and the cars go into parc ferme after this evening's qualifying session. That said, Brawn seemed pretty happy with yesterday's efforts, so it could be that they spent the night adding new parts to the livery.

Yeah, I just heard it was confirmed on the Telecast. They might put a decal or two on the car for the weekend but I doubt it will be anything fancy. Leigh Diffey(commentator) is already referring to it as Brawn/virgin GP.

Oh, can't wait for the qualify... i really hope i'm not in for disappointment. I would love if the field is as balanced as they say.

we will find out shortly.
