F1 201X - Updates & News DiscussionF1 2010-2016

I would love to see a video of you doing this.

I mean it can be done, but it's not remotely realistic. It's not a flick spin but more of a slow understeer progressing into a slow drift like your stuck in mud.

Same physics problem with doing a donut, does not work properly.

Not a huge deal, but just shows how unrealistic the physics are. Unless there is some hidden driver aid...

In my opinion I think there is a few hidden driver aids that say they are off but they aren't really, for example the throttle problem when you go on the grass. They will most likely change the driving aids for the full game.

All the actual simulator versions of an F1 car are nowhere near as understeery and doggy as this though, Mu22stangs explanation seems to be a fancy excuse for a very obvious flaw.
.

I have been on an actual F1 simulator (which was a privelage) and have to say the physics on this game are closer to the simulator than 2010/2011. The fact that if you turn in too fast or too hard it understeers you out is very similar to the simulator, also the oversteer you can get in the middle of the corner and sometimes during the exit is also very realistic and just needs to be controlled with steering correction and acceleration corrections.

Also if you look at real life and watch a F1 race, you will see that the racing line is very thin and even minor mistakes like a snap of oversteer or a little brake lock up can shoot you off onto the marbles where you will encouter a mix of snap oversteer and ridiculous understeer causing the car to run wider and wider. Codies have tried to include this factor into the game this year along with a much greater downforce loss when following a car ahead.

Also this new problem I have heard of is the 'slippery curbs', now pleas don't try and tell me that outside curbs in real life aren't very slippery because they are especially with marbles on them.

I am not saying this game is realistic or unrealistic but I am just saying it is getting closer to a real simulator, and most racing drivers with experience on games will also say they are getting closer to the real thing. The one thing I am hoping for is that the driving aids are changed for the full game as this is very noticeable when driving off road because it feels like there is a 'throttle restrictor' or something.
Also you have to remember that one of the developers and testers is Anthony Davidson who is an ex-formula 1 driver and test driver, so it is fair to say he knows a lot more about the feel of an F1 car than any of us do.

👍

The AI in the demo is only hard not legend which is in the full game :)

And I can't wait to see what the real Legend difficulty is like, hopefully more realistic lap times and behaviour by the AI.

All in all I am really enjoying this new game and can really notice the improvements from last year. Good work Codies.

Well, that just strikes me as another example of the arrogance displayed by the hardcore fans of Formula 1, who seem to think that the only acceptable product is a hardcore simulator that everyone - even those with only a passing interest in Formula 1 or video gaming - will appreciate because the most dedicated fans approve of it.

How can you say that? F1 2010/2011 were no simulators but they were a damnsight more realistic than this and they had great wheel support, I certaintly liked them both. In the 2012 demo you can't even get a proper linear wheel response, just around the middle point there is a bit of deadzone.

The game appears to have no oversteer anymore other than a fake canned oversteer effect, so now you can run laps by simply lining up your car in the right gear and yanking the wheel, you won't over turn the corner anymore and you wont spin from oversteer unless you trigger the canned effect (which is not dynamic or controlable as part of the driving model), the car will just stay planted on the line through the corner.

What it means is that once you get used to it the game is a lot easier, but also a lot more frustrating because you have to drive in a certain way. I tested it and was able to run a 1:44 by simply going full lock through every one of the low speed corners

brake, change down to first gear (in 2nd you will understeer into china) and turn the wheel full lock = Win!

Well if that is your idea of a good formula one game then more power too you, but I won't be buying this bollox.

Well I didn't say it was realistic, but I did say it was a lot closer to a real simulator. YES there ARE still improvements to be made and maybe to oversteer is a little fake sometimes (and like 2011 wasn't) but it is much closer than 2010 and 2011. 2010 had stupid uncontrollable slides and you could just slam your car into the corner at any old speed and hope for the best. 2011 was the complete opposite, it had major oversteer issues in my opinion that you could control very easily making you feel good but really all you did was countersteer. 2012's physics are controllable but only if you plan ahead, you can't just throw the cars in on full lock because you will understeer out. Another example is 2010 you hit a curb you either carry on undisturbed or spin out, 2011 you hit a curb get stupidly controllable oversteer and carry on setting the fastest lap, while 2012 you hit a curb it oversteers or understeers and effects the lap time dramatically.

In MY opinion it is way more realistic than the others and you really do have to plan ahead and think 'will that cars turbulence effect cause understeer on my car?'.
Sure there maybe many changes yet to be made before it gets close to the simulator but I think it is definately ahead of the other two games.

Little tip for the PC guys here:

Go to the Steam/SteamApps/common/F12012Demo folder, go to the tracks/circuits bit, select both tracks, copy and paste them somewhere safe. Go back to the folder, go into Monza, highlight everything, copy, then paste it into the Abu Dhabi folder, allowing it to overwrite. Now when you go to season challenge you can race on Abu Dhabi instead of Monza.

Works the other way round too, so copy the contents of the Abu Dhabi folder into the Monza folder to hotlap the Mclaren round Monza.

Also on the PC version, has anyone got an issue with the force feedback with a G27? On the PC version I can't actually use the FFB as it is erratic and quite crazy, going into a right hand corner and it will sometimes pull left with a lot of force, if I leave go of the wheel it will turn itself to full lock, along with some cog jumping jitters and other weird effects.

FFB works fine on the PS3 version.

Nice!

It's growing on me. Didn't buy 2011 and although this doesn't seem like two years of progress, I am still likely to buy. I think for those disappointed, try the young driver test free runs. Good fun. I think it's a case of getting used to it after previous iterations.

Thumbs up for all of that 👍 :) I also can't wait for next friday, pre-ordered to pick up in my lunch break :)

Gave this a spin last night. Not going to judge it right away because I'm not able to do a standard time trial like I want. :indiff:

Car is rather twitchy, steering is way to sensitive down the straightaways.

Ok, here goes! So I've been monitoring this forum for a while and I have a few opinions......OPINIONS.......that I would like to share.

Firstly, I think that the demo is awesome! The new suspension model is great. I get the feel of having no downforce at low speeds, just like in a real F1 car. The slight understeer problem isn't really a gamebreaker for me because the tuning aspect has been left out of the demo, therefore there is no way to compensate for the understeer with a better setup. I also like the new audio. At low revs the car sounds just the way it should. I think the demo is great for what it is, a DEMO! This leads me into my second topic.

Everyone really needs to read the disclaimer before they hit the start button. "This demo does not represent the final quality of the game." What this means is a little more than half of you think! It doesn't just mean that you won't have all of the options that the full game will have, it means that it's not the final build! There will be improvements to more than just the content! Last year everyone was moaning because we didn't get a demo and how they weren't going to buy the game because Codies couldn't release a demo. This year we get a demo and everyone is moaning because the demo is not the off-the-shelf product that they have to spend money to play. It's FREE people! If you don't want to buy the game because you don't like it then fine, don't buy the game and that's that!!! Codies are not PD, they don't have the spending power or backing from Sony. Their titles are yearly and not once in a blue moon like GT. I think they're on the right path to having a very good racing title, once they weed out all of the problems (yes, that's you. yea you, the one complaining!) How many people still play FIFA? A lot! How many improvements do they get a year? One, two? At least we got more new features than the world's best selling sports game. I think that's saying something! FIFA is not a simulator, and neither is the F1 series. If you want a simulator then go play one. This game is not for you. This game is for up-and-comers to the sport of F1 and for those of us who are just happy to have a Formula 1 game. I live in the US and I don't have cable, so this is pretty much as close to the action as I get. I'm not asking for a simulator, I just want a playable game. And this one fits right in.

My two cents worth of opinions. Take them or leave them. Thanks for the read! Hope to see those of you who buy it on the track!

HOLY CRAP! Someone i can relate to!

ya know, I thought the same thing about your posts. btw I'm kinda like a stalker fan :dopey:. I agree with a lot of your opinions also, and was kinda interested in your league if you're going to run one for 2012.

Nailed it. 👍

At the main menu click on career, then the young driver thingy, it should have a list of all the tests you did, and at the bottom should be an option to free run at Yas Marina 👍

Thanks 👍 I have seen the option I just can't access it. Just wondering, what system are you running the demo? I've just got the PS3 version, maybe the free run is only available for the PC and/or Xbox versions?

That's a bit weird, i'm on PS3 as well, I was able to get on it earlier on today

Correct. I think it's there in the YDT though. I was lapping for about 40 minutes and got the fuel warning light.

Good to know. Will give it another shot this weekend. That's all I want to do is free run and get used to the physics, don't care about the tests or the race.

It's not arrogant to wish for a great sim and to be disappointed if you don't get one.
There's a difference between wishing for it and demanding it. I'm talking about the latter.

Do you really think that it's a big issue that there aren't enough casual racing games on the market?
That's not my point.

Let's put it this way: F1 2011 is not a hardcore sim. And yet, it has one of the steepest learning curves of any game I have ever played. It's harder to get into than Final Fantasy VIII and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. I consider myself to be a dedicated fan of the sport, but I just found F1 2011 to be far too difficult.

At the same time, people want Codemasters to tighten F1 2012 up even more. They want a dedicated, ultra-accurate and hardcore racing simulator, and they seem to be under the impression that if Codemasters make one, then casual gamers will flock to it because the most-hardcore fans of the sport give their nod of approval. The problem is that the previous games have been difficult enough to get into, so making F1 2012 even harder to immerse yourself in is only going to drive casual gamers away - and with the market for Formula 1 being something of a niche (most video game developers can't get an IP off the ground unless they can guarantee at least $100 million in sales), driving away casual gamers is only going to hurt the series and the sport.

After you complete the YDT, go to main menu, then back onto the YDT again, you will then be able to go on it. 👍

Finally had a chance to try the pc demo. I'm totally confused.

I have a massive deadzone in my wheel (G25). By massive I mean nothing from 0-270 degrees in both directions. Is there a menu to calibrate the wheel somewhere that I can't see?

Any ideas?

Cheers Shaun.

The wheel calibrates when you start up. Or at least that's what it seems like...

You can edit the sensitivity and deadzones either during any of the events in the pause menu, or at the main menu > My F1.
