Formula 1 Gran Premio de España Santander 2012

Looks 60/40 in favour, regretly, for Hamilton getting a penalty where he could start 6th the grid, possibly forcing to use his 6 lap old tyres.

EDIT: Becuase many of the F1 boffins believe it would have taken 1.5 litres to get back to the pits, and not the 1.3l taken.

Ted Kravitz tweeted earlier that it takes around 2l of fuel for an in-lap on top of the 1l required for the sample and that McLaren must prove the car could of completed an in-lap unless technical problems prevented it from doing so. I think he may end up taking the penalty.

So may Vettel, doing the rounds he is also facing a 5 place grid penalty for blocking Nico Hulkenburg.

Twas a rumour, ignore this 👍

McLaren don't make it easy for themselves. He was 5 tenths up, should have had plenty of room for more fuel and still get pole. Surely they knew it wouldn't be enough when they sent him out. :ouch:

Goooooo Fernando!

Gonna be a great race, sending LH to the back of the grid seems harsh tho, should have been 10 places imo

Depends. 10 is fair if there was a technical hitch or something. This tells me his car was fine and was deliberately under-fuelled. They know the rules.

No. 0 is fair if there is a technical hitch and thats what it would have been.

I doubt they would purposely under-fuel what would have been a certain pole. Just seems like more 🤬 ups from McLaren. Could they throw this season away any more?

By a huge stroke of luck I was right and said that Maldonado will be on pole.

I know it may seem harsh under the circumstances but McLaren have a bit of history. I feel by not filling the car enough so it would get back to the pits so the fuel in the car can be tested is a very basic error and more mistakes seem to be happening to them.

I was gonna say that Hamilton was gonna win but he won't now unless a major miracle happens. I think the winner will be Alonso now because of this with Raikkonen second and Maldonado 3rd.

Wow, let's hope Alonso can't get past Maldonado then. He clearly has a fast car unlike Hulkenburg in Brazil, he could win this but has Alonso and the Lotus's behind him, fast-starters.

As for Hamilton's penalty, it couldn't be more then an honest mistake, it was obvious that he could get pole and he did by half a second, unfortunate but he is still in a good car for tomorrow.

Well, it seems they miscalculated the amount of fuel they put in and he was under-fuelled. It's a stupid error by the team and makes me wonder where the Mclaren brains went, are they so unused to having a good car.

I was really looking forward to hear Eddie Jordan's opinion on this and what he would have said about their "mission control" and the show just cuts off and goes to the oddbox and weather...

Seems ridiculous to send him all the way to the back!!

Why should the driver be punished? He got through to Q2 within regulations so surely he should start 10th anyway?

So Ginsters Maldonado is going to start from P1?

Dear me. I was hoping some body contact between him and Hamilton would give Perez and Alonso the advantage, but now with Alonso starting alongside him, I'm worried (!)

They sure make it harder for themselves, as you say. It seems it happens to them quite a bit; they try to be clever and it backfires. Still can't say I'm too upset to see Maldonado promoted to the very front and I'd love to see him win tomorrow (although I am aware the odds are strongly against him on that one).

If you don't have enough fuel then you don't have enough fuel. The issue is, he is sent to the back. Not to 10th place.

Meanwhile there are three drivers who did not set a qualifying time at all starting in the top 10. If they don't set a qualifying time in Q3 then they must start from the back as well.

All times from Q1 are lost when you move to Q2. All Q2 times are lost when you move to Q3. They have not qualified.
