Formula 1 Gran Premio de España Santander 2012

But how would they work out how to use the wheel gun?

To me, to you, to me, to you... It would be mayhem!

"Oh dear!"

"Oh dear, oh dear!"

"Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!"

Then Martin Whitmarsh turns up...

And hands Hamilton the T-car...

Can't believe it, so many times I've seen other driver's blatantly pull over to avoid running out of fuel but I have never seen them penalised. The least the FIA could do is allow him to start wherever his other Q3 lap would have put him or even let him start in 10th because he got into Q3 fairly. If I was Lewis I would be seriously tempted to retire someday soon because the FIA take the p*ss, he must have had twice as many penalties as the next most penalised driver in the last couple of years, at this rate he will never win another WDC especially with Mclaren messing it up at critical moments.

Names and dates would be nice to back up your statement.

I think he is on about at the end of the race where drivers do the same as Lewis did today to leave a sample for the FIA to check

I remember at the nurburgring last year, I think it was Webber who gave Alonso a ride back to the pits. That's just off the top of my head but I know there's been more, my dad was watching with me and at the time he said in the last race Vettel and Button ran out of fuel before they got to the pits or at least pulled over to prevent running out of fuel.

That's after the race though. We're talking about qualifying here.

It is not acceptable for drivers to stop early simply to save petrol for the sample - because that would give them a competitive advantage as they could run with less fuel, and therefore less weight, during their qualifying lap.

Following a directive issued at the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix, after Lewis Hamilton and McLaren were given a reprimand and a $10,000 fine for stopping deliberately on a slowing down lap after qualifying to save fuel, the FIA has made it clear that only genuine technical problems would be acceptable.

After the race is fine as long as you can still supply a fuel sample. Stopping after your qualifying lap is against the regulations.

I wrote this back on page 7 before there was any hint that Hamilton could get excluded and nobody paid much attention to it. I don't want to sound like a smart alek but... ;)

I know how you feel I guessed that Maldonado would get pole before Q3 and I can't help but be a bit smug cos of this

Starting from 1st =/= Getting pole.

Hamilton got pole. Maldonado starts 1st because of a subsequant penalty for Hamilton.

Alonso is a brave man lining up alongside Ginsters Maldonado going into turn one...

No. Hamilton is completely excluded from qualifying, so Maldonado got pole.
Hamilton originally qualified on pole, but was excluded for failing to return to the pits under his own power and supply a fuel sample.

There was no way Lewis could have done anything about this cos if he did get back to the pits there wouldn't have been enough fuel to be tested therefore penalty.

I think someone from McLaren maybe receiving there p45 once they get home.

So in this case, Maldonado is being credited with his first career pole?

Interesting. To be fair, he drove a blinder. Great lap.

The official formula 1 site says different:

Hamilton excluded from qualifying; Maldonado on pole

If a driver has a problem and has to start from the pitlane, often the grid lines up with said grid slot empty. But in this case, Hamilton was disqualified, so everyone moves up, and Maldonado's time was officially the fastest therefore he got pole position. It wasn't a grid penalty, he was excluded completely. Lewis may aswell have not turned up, at least that way he would have had fresh tyres.

He had sufficient amount of fuel to be sampled because he stopped on the track. If he returned to the pits under his own power, he would have less than one liter to sample.

Yes I understand that but they are penalising because he didn't make it to the pits which I thought was fine. I wonder if they would have pushed Hamilton to the back if he had intentionally drove into the gravel and made it look accidental, well we'll find out when Red Bull do it at the next track with a gravel trap.
