Honestly, I'm in two minds about Max getting screwed over. How many times has he held onto positions just by "forgetting" to make the apex, which is totally fine under the rules?

On the other hand - have the FIA learned nothing from Bianchi's fatal accident? Or is he just going to be a merchandise opportunity next year for his 10th anniversary?
Gaslys near miss with the tractor some years back tells me no.
 
It's amazing how quickly Race Control has decided that this crash is worth a red flag.
 
This has to be the most expensive qualy in ages.

I highly doubt we'll have 20 cars at the start. I wouldn't be surprised if it's only 16 or something.
This entire qualifying session feels like a literal knockout. At this point they should flag Q3.
 
So potentially 5 cars that won’t make it in time for the race. Seems like Max used his get out of jail free card.

Can someone tell me if my memory/understanding of the rules regarding race time is correct? The race has to be completed within 4 hours of the official race start time or 1 hour before sunset (which isn't an issue as it's 6.30pm local time), but once the race starts it has to be finished in 3 hours, with 2 hours of racing time or 300km + 1 lap? I think that's how I interpret it?

I think that's all correct, except for the regular distance. It's not 300km + 1 lap, it's the smallest number of laps that total over 305km. Granted, that usually comes down to the same number.
 
That incident was 100% on Gasly for not going slow past where the incident was. Race Control did nothing wrong there
No question Gasly was going too fast but, if memory serves me correctly, it was low visibility and that tractor/truck wasn't illuminated at all, not to mention the red flag being belatedly thrown.

You could argue RC couldn't have much control over the lack of warning lights on the recovery vehicle (although it is bizarre considering those conditions weren't exactly a freak occurrence for Suzuka) but definitely not the latter.
 
Looks like everyone may make it to race time? Aston says both cars will be ready, I believe Sainz is starting from pit row, Albon initially reported an hour ago he was out, but Williams has since said they're still going through it 30 minutes ago.
