Well it appears the Australian Grand Prix curse continues for home drivers. Doohan crashes on lap 1 and Piastri spins off from 2nd and doesn't recover. What do they have to do to get a home podium?

That was an enjoyable race, good fun. This season is shaping up to be a classic, with any one of a number of drivers in contention. Ferrari should look at getting Bernie Collins in as strategist (hell, Bernie Winters is a better choice at the moment and he's been dead for 30+ years), but something has got to change there because they're too slow at reacting - everything has to go through a committee to make a decision.

For the few people coming here first before watching highlights on YouTube, go with the official channel. They extended those highlights to 13 odd minutes instead of the 7/8 from last year while Sky's version was an absolute mess in the editing department (hard cuts, key moments missed near the end of the race).

Enjoyable race to kick off the season, feel bad for the rookies, tough conditions to be faced with in your first/2nd/4th/12th race start. Well done to Antonelli in particular who really seemed to grow in confidence as the race wore on and timed well in the late drama.

Verstappen showing again how good he is to be that close to Norris in what is clearly a tough car to drive Vs the planted McLaren. Norris won't have everything his own way this season, Verstappen is too good to count out and Piastri isn't going to just lay down and watch Norris win everything.

Ferrari did Ferrari things, was a gamble to stay out and had half a chance of paying off but then left it too late to make the switch when it was clear it wouldn't work. Lewis will naturally take a bit of time to adapt and would have been hoping for a dry race followed by some wet practice sessions to adapt to the Ferrari in these conditions but did pretty well considering. Had a tough day but deep down he'll be happy. China will really show us his comfort level in that car, if it stays dry, Vs the Mercedes as it will expose as areas he was struggling with in the Merc for the last few years.

Bring on Shanghai.

Fair play to Norris for winning. This'll be the year that Norris kites will be flown and a deluge of Norris propaganda will begin to supplant Hamilton in the English media. If you watch on Sky, get ready because you better be a Norris fan.

Welcome to Ferrari strategies Lewis
Not a great start for Lewis, and some of those radio interactions were very tetchy indeed.

I know it's early doors, but it doesn't bode especially well for the future already.

Feel sorry for Oscar, but a brilliant win for Lando and a fantastic race. Quite the test for the rookie drivers, and a very impressive result for Antonelli.

Lewis might win a race or 2 but this Ferrari team definitely isn't capable of winning a championship and Lewis doesn't have the time left to form a championship winning team.

They're always going to need to adapt to eachother in a pressure situation. All a learning curve.

This was way better than having the opening race at some track in a desert.

What a race though, the F1 journalists will have tons of material for nothing burger articles in the future.

Wow what an absolute classic at Albert Park! I'm happy I stuck it out in the variable conditions where I had to take shelter at the Ford and then Toyota booth before the race began. It had everything - crashes, strategy, weather, skill, heartbreak, embarrassment, failure and jubilation. Or, as I like to put it, chaos, calamity, action and insanity. Melbourne delivered an absolute knockout of a race on an extraordinary weekend with a record crowd. Our passion for motorsport down here is incredible and I'm soo happy to have been a part of it.

Now lets talk about the race itself.

I was sitting in the Schumacher stand between turns 13 and 14 so I saw some madness right in front of me. Hadjar couldn't have started his career any worse by throwing it away on the formation lap. The start was delayed as a result. At 3:15, the cars did the formation lap again and we got a start. Unfortunately, Doohan bins it a few seconds later and the safety car comes out for the first time. During this period, Carlos Sainz crashes in front of me and retires from the race. What a disappointment. After a rocky start, the race got going and we had some green flag running on a drying track. Things settled down for a while but shortly after the majority of the field pitted for slicks, rain began to fall again and both McLarens were caught out, with Piastri going into the grass. The dream was over for our man but even so, the roar from the crowd as he got going again was immense. Bortoleto went off in front of me, Lawson crashed like Hadjar and Alonso forgot how to drive, sparking two more safety car periods in the process. Anyway with 3 laps to go Verstappen starts to close in on Norris and we suddenly have a battle for the win in the dying stages of the race. I thought Verstappen was going to make a dive at turn 11 on the last lap but he was too far back and Lando won. I won't be forgetting this race any time soon. Man of the match goes to Kimi Antonelli for making up 12 spots from 16th on debut. What a performance. Great results too for Albon, Hulkenberg and Stroll. Melbourne is the perfect place to start the F1 season.

well, um...that race was promising but also disappointing at the same time. I dont think Lewis and Charles are doomed but strategy conversations need to happen asap lol
