Gran Turismo 6 coming to PS3

What if the sky falls? Gran Turismo as a series isn't some housewife all alone at home with some boogeyman named Forza stalking outside her windows.

GT will continue to lead the racing sim market by a substantial margin and fans everywhere will continue to support it. However, there will be exceptions as there are individuals who will refuse to be happy unless everything is perfect.

It's handy you've got a response to your own comments:

"Could you be any more dramatic over this whole thing?:ouch:"

I am not quite sure how to respond to this statement. Please elaborate, because I believe that GT6 will arrive on both the PS4 and the PS3 to meet the hunger.

I feel like we must be talking about two different PD's. Considering their track record, I find it incredibly unlikely they'd release a game on two systems, since, thanks to the PS3's architecture, that'd almost be on par with developing two games at the same time.

You keep saying that TD, that Sony will be in some type of "bad day" when Forza 5 arrives. I heard the same doomsday talk here about Forza 4 too, and you know something? Last time I checked, FM5 sales are no where NEAR Gran Turismo Five's dispite it's alleged "superiority".

And iRacing's take rate isn't better than GT5's. Guess it's a worse sim too. Also, since sales equal quality, the Civic and Camry are the best cars ever.

I completely understand the "bad day" reference. If GT6 is shown at E3 for PS3, while FM5 is shown taking advantage of whatever Microsoft's next-gen console is called, it will cause quite a bit of a stir for those who do see the need to pick a side. It's the biggest argument I can agree with for having GT6 on PS4; it's just too late to put a game as (potentially) big as GT6 on a system with a clear expiry date in the face of your biggest competitor (critically) likely showing their next installment on the shiny newness. It'd be almost guaranteed the GT series would then lose one of the few big remaining USP's in the endless comparison; better graphics. And, for better or for worse, a lot of people still put a lot of weight in that; look at the Standards issue.

LOL. This post put a smile on my face. A lot of people do give off the vibe that they hate Gran Turismo but STILL love talking about it. I agree with you, PDI and Gran Turismo will be fine.👍

Heh, I love talking about it (and spending so much time at a site dedicated to it) because the series itself got me started on my automobile enthusiasm. I want to see it do well - it just so happens there's a lot more competition out there now, that shines much brighter lights on the series' shortcomings than there were last generation. And rather than limit myself to the childish idea that I must swear allegiance to only one console-based sim-like game, I'd rather play them all.

This.

Many of us began playing Gran Turismo as a young child, teen or young adult. Now, it's 15 years old. I remember thinking that NO game could compete with GT, but by the early/mid 2000's, it was clear GT could no longer do it all. I want to see it succeed, or perhaps that's just the little boy inside me who enjoys reflecting on those late 90's years (with a hot copy of Gran Turismo, a shiny new PS1 and plenty of free time.) :) Being a kid was good.

But Forza and other racers put the spotlight on GT's weaknesses, and there are many. GT6 has a lot of pressure on it. I believe GT5 lost some fans, new and old, when it released the way it did; so incomplete and sloppy.

Regardless of the console, GT6 has to be fun and show us that some of our concerns have been met. New hardware/software won't protect us from bad decisions. Bad decisions make bad games; GT5. Good decisions makes good games; GT4, GT2, GT1. Anyways, here's to hoping that GT does not eventually fade away as other series have. :nervous::dunce::scared:

maxpontiac-> Your fanboyism is pure denial. keep trusting kaz and his 🤬...i'll stick with the facts.

Btw, do you remember when Kaz said that they probably put too many GTRs in the game ? And one month later we get a GTR as a DLC!!

Or the sound of the Honda HSV-010 that had NOTHING to do with the real one (did they even record it?) And then Kaz says sounds a too real?

Great Kaz! Keep on the good work!

As Slip and others have said though, GT5 and Forza 4 were released on comparable systems. If GT5 came out on the PS2, how well received would that have been? Yes, millions would buy it, I would too, but I'd be a very sad fan because those six car races with no damage and last gen graphics, along with no very good features like time of day change, night racing and weather - on those tracks which feature it - wouldn't happen. Meanwhile, Forza 4 would have its Livery Editor and at least eight car races again, pretty realistic damage, and an online system that was pretty darn cool.

Now, how does that scenario sound? Comparable games, or one being gold, the other Cheetos?

The increase in power may not result in stark contrasts per se on the next gen systems, unless you think that realistic weather, time of day transitions on all tracks, 24 to 32 car fields enabling serious multiclass racing, the potential of a simulation-like damage system, better physics and bot A.I., a real HD Course Maker, true 1080p and 3D at 60fps... little things like those are marked improvements. Call me crazy, but THIS is what I want in a sequel, not the equivalent of GT5 patched to what it should have been.

I don't think you understand the impact of what a Forza 5 on NeXBox hardware versus a Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 would be to the gaming world. How it would affect gamers, fans, and SONY. How it could affect sales. I could see GT6 selling about as well as Drive Club, say four or five million units in a few years. No, I don't think it would mean the mortal wounding of Gran Turismo, but I don't see the overshadowing of a GT game by something like Drive Club and Forza as good things. This is a different thing entirely than the Standard car and track issue, which the gamers at large didn't care about as much as the short A-Spec Mode, the XP system and those dumb paint chips.

I say this as a fan of Gran Turismo, Polyphony Digital and Kazunori. I don't care about other developers. I don't see them having the same passion, if they really have any at all, and "drive to create games" and "passion" are two different things. I think Kaz is a great guy, and he and the team just need to focus on the car and racing aspects of GT6 (and drifting, as much as I couldn't care less).

Tenacious D-> I don't understand how we can disagree so much...when we agree on so many things !

(snip... just go read it, it's another good post)
Unfortunately I have to run to work - sick no less - so I'll have to briefly say that I think we're debating a small nuance, and that's why I'm not as alarmed as you are. You see it as a matter of "they HAVE to evolve or GT sucks" and for me it's more "they SHOULD evolve at least some, and along the lines you and the other sensible posters mentioned." I'll elaborate more later, if I have a brain left tonight. :P

Thank you, I'm known for being very humorous at times in the real world. :)👍

Since theres a certain SOMEONE in this thread I know (not saying any names) (:sly: pfft)

Who literally still 🤬. (:irked:)

About Kaz this, GT that and is clearly NOW looked at as a hater by ME. (:grumpy:)

But he still cares about the GT series. ()

 Mind you those smilies are his expressions.:lol::lol: Love being funny.

"(:mischievous:) You guys keep talking, cause y, you know what? W, without a doubt, GT6 will still be craaaaap." *Runs off the thread like he always does until later on to write whatever he comes up with. Where you go said person. Tell me more about how much you hate GT and Kaz. XD (GRRR! :banghead: *writes another angry post*)

I still have faith in Kaz and PD making GT6 the greatest there is by doing their very best. Whether on PS3 or PS4. :sly: My other side of me saids GT6 maybe on both systems making everyone happy.

The fact of the matter is GT clearly still sells on name alone. I highly, highly doubt the 5.5 million people that bought the game in the first two weeks of release did so because they were fully clued up on the game and what it entailed, thinking it was a 10/10 product. People buy it on name alone (Plus the fact it's the only game of it's type on PS3) and for that reason GT will indeed continue to sell very well. That is until they lose that ability.

It can happen and will happen if they keep pumping out mediocre games or if someone comes along with an alternative on PS3.

Thank you. People are gonna buy GT regardless if it sucks or not because its GT. GT are in peoples blood.

You missed the point. GT has momentum to keep selling now, but if quality does not increase, it will lose that momentum. It will fade even faster if a direct PS3 competitor shows up.

People won't just buy GT. Not indefinitely.

Great thread. Some really good points to think about. A lot to chew on.

Jerome

I can tell you that many people will not buy GT6 and even less GT7 if quality in the sound and career mode does not go up by a long shot.

Interesting point it's the possibility of a direct competitor in the same platform... one example is that I play a lot of driving/racing games on my PS3, in each one I find a strong characteristic. I play TDU2 for the cruising, huge and beautiful scenery, I play NFSMW actually for the same reason (great map, beautiful cars, Porsches), I play NFS Shift 2 for the excitement of its races and God, the sounds are great (exagerated sometimes, but awesome), I love Driver San Francisco because of the driver movements in the cockpit cam (honestly some of the best I've seen)...

If I think about GT5, it does have a lot of stuff that I love too... and its my favourite racing game but I notice that recently I've been switching between car games a lot more than I did in GT2, GT4 times... looking for stuff I can't find in it.

If sometime does a competitor appear in the same platform, doing stuff in a different way, with quality, it'll be interesting to see...

GT5 has proven that GT should not be bought just because of its name. And I think for the first time since the original Gran Turismo, that GT has to sell itself again to a large community (of wavering fans and new-comers). I used to buy GT games on day one, no thoughts/questions about it.

Now, I'll be waiting. GTPlanet members will cut to the chase and give you a proper review! ;)

When you think about it, GT is the only sim that kinda gives you the feel that its only sim that is the best. I guess you can put a tag and say its the best console sim. GT has the tracks and cars that would last a great deal of time. But who really has used all 1000 cars? Not a lot of people. I mean come on GT really started the craze for console sims. I have faith they can polish up their game and make it awesome on either console.

Well I bought a ps3 because of the impending gt5, and would not rush to buy a ps4 if the same quality of product was on offer. New console does not equal better games either.

In a way redeeming themselves with a brilliant final ps3 game might be a good thing for ps4 sales in the long term.
Regardless of what happens, I'm sure we'll get a gt: prologue ps4 announcement sooner rather than later.

This. +1 I like that idea a lot. :)👍

EDIT: And is a very smart move too. They should so do it imo.

Amazing to think that this thread just surpassed 1,000 posts on the basis of a single line by a Sony exec.

Of course it is because people are eager to know "What's next? Is it really a PS3 game or a PS4 game? What's the belivable release date?"
The fuzz around GT6, after how disappoiting GT5 was, is of the chart
Honestly, I am dying to know more about GT6

That level of interest is a big part of why people were disappointed with GT5. The long wait and the hype fueled expectations to unrealistic levels. Then when Gran Turismo 5 turned out to be a video game people were disappointed. Hopefully that doesn't happen to the same extent this go around.

You don't know that for sure, and since you like examining the big picture, I believe there is a game coming out that will be on both the PS3 and the PS4.

Not everyone has the same view of quality as I see GT5 as a high quality title that has a some issues. What game doesn't? I just focus on the ones I am willing to look over.

If GT6 is shown at E3 for PS3, while FM5 is shown taking advantage of whatever Microsoft's next-gen console is called, it will cause quite a bit of a stir for those who do see the need to pick a side.

IF, funny how you entire mindset is based off a worse case scenario for Sony.

Heh, I love talking about it (and spending so much time at a site dedicated to it) because the series itself got me started on my automobile enthusiasm.

Everybody who has contributed to this thread all shares the same passion, I sometime forget about that, but it doesn't change my point. I can't state that GT turned me into a car enthusiast, but I can say that Gran Turismo brought it into focus.

maxpontiac-> Your fanboyism is pure denial. keep trusting kaz and his bullsh-t...i'll stick with the facts.

I guess if being a fan of my opinion which is (in case you forgot) how I believe GT6 will on both the PS3 and PS4 makes me a fanboy, so be it.

Btw, do you remember when Kaz said that they probably put too many GTRs in the game ? And one month later we get a GTR as a DLC!!

What does this have to do with where GT6 is going to be? It doesn't.

Now, how does that scenario sound? Comparable games, or one being gold, the other Cheetos?

I see your point, but what you are forgetting is that 77 million people could be prospective Cheetos purchasers and while only a (+/- ) 5 million will be buying the gold. Why not sell to both?

I don't think you understand the impact of what a Forza 5 on NeXBox hardware versus a Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 would be to the gaming world. How it would affect gamers, fans, and SONY.

I do understand the impact, I just don't see it as Meteor Crater like you and others do. It'll leave a mark, but please, Forza sales are great, but no where NEAR what full fledged GT game can and will do.

I say this as a fan of Gran Turismo, Polyphony Digital and Kazunori. I don't care about other developers. I don't see them having the same passion, if they really have any at all, and "drive to create games" and "passion" are two different things. Indeed. The fact that Kaz himself puts his person in harms way speaks volumes to me on who to trust when it comes to racing video games.

Since theres a certain SOMEONE in this thread I know (not saying any names) (:sly: pfft) Who literally still b*****es. (:irked:)

That's why I don't really take people like this serious. They dislike so much about GT, yet won't stop talking about it... almost as if they have taken up a cause or something.

My other side of me saids GT6 maybe on both systems making everyone happy.

It is more then "happiness"... it's smart business. GT games are huge sellers, why limit your business to just one piece of hardware?

The fact of the matter is GT clearly still sells on name alone. I highly, highly doubt the 5.5 million people that bought the game in the first two weeks of release did so because they were fully clued up on the game and what it entailed, thinking it was a 10/10 product. Disagree with this. People around the net can find fault with the Standards, the shadows, the tuning, etc., but the fact remains the same for a ton of people. Gran Turismo for a console "drives" great for console. Note - I didn't say perfect. Yes, GT5 sold 5+ million copies in the first few weeks, and it sold around another 4 million copies in the next two years. Not very many games do that.

It can happen and will happen if they keep pumping out mediocre games or if someone comes along with an alternative on PS3.

If that was the case, and clearly.. it is not to everyone.

Not many games have multiple re-releases forcing businesses to repurchase the latest version to have on their store shelves either.

And I just read you saying GT6 should be a PS3 and PS4 game... I'm glad you aren't the product manager of this title. ;)
It's a tricky position to be in. If GT6 releases on PS3 it prevents many from jumping to the PS4 but the game itself will sell a ton. If GT6 releases on PS4 it will force folks to make the jump and certainly boost console sales. If releasing on both platforms simultaneously, it will be stupid because everyone will know that the game will be held back due to the lowest common denominator, the PS3 itself. For some reason I fear PD are working on a Prologue for PS3 and then full title for PS4 and I loathe the whole premise behind Prologue titles. They are not needed and only hurt the full fledged release.

I'll buy GT6 day 1 regardless, but pending what console it's on will have me going to Sony's next platform sooner or not.

I can't see how Prologues hurt the bigger games at all. They're stop gaps on a longer journey, sometimes it's better to stay the night in a friendly town rather than push on into the wilderness.

Besides, it'd be much better value than the DLC everyone seems to want more of.

In my opinion, GT5P was one of the reasons why we got GT5 in the state it was in. You don't grow the team, you don't outsource, you take on non game making projects, while working on a Prologue title, a PSP title and a full console release is resource mismanagement and why we saw an unfinished broken game with the bulk of content being port work in GT5.

Had GT5 been a full fledged premium game without the issues it would be absolutely amazing. Prologues simply aren't needed.

Since GT6 has the full attention now, I can't see it being "unfinished", but being very polished this time. :sly: My faith in PD making GT6 the best is pretty high. (I know someone is gonna come out and say "ohhh what a fanboy").

:facepalm::rolleyes:
Bulk of the content being ported? Your clearly not seeing it from the perspective of a video game programmer or even more, the way a creator of video games knows about how setbacks happen...which is always.

OH! So I was right that you're completely ignorant on the subject matter that is the vidjya game industry.

What about Prologue didn't end up in GT5 proper, and what took so much extra time that it supposedly ruined GT5? The lack of Premium content in GT5 has nothing to do with Prologue - like I said, it was a stop-gap, merely "on the way" to GT5.

Here's an interesting perspective.

"To be honest, the thing I'm most concerned about isn't the specs or functions, but the release date. The PS3 is a mature hardware platform, and there's no reason why it can't keep a role in the market. For users and for makers, there's the feeling that the PS4 is coming too early. Once the PS4 comes out, I think you'll see a lot of changes as each maker tries to figure out which platform they need to focus on in the future." - Sohei Niikawa, president, Nippon Ichi Software

Polygon: http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/19/4122482/japanese-devs-respond-to-the-ps4-announcement-part-2

I can't help but wonder if Polyphony Digital feel the same about the new hardware, or if this thinking could relate to GT6 development. To me it seems as though the game should be a PS3 title but the PS4 showed up putting that in doubt.

We'll probably never know what has gone on at Polyphony for the last 2+ years. However I think it's a safe bet that both Sony and Kazunori Yamauchi would have liked to have released two GT's for the current console. The only reason that may not happen is called PlayStation 4. Either way GT6 will probably be a lot of fun and I look forward to both possibilities.
