GTP_Twisted vs GTP_Wolfdude
For the first time in a while I got to taste the palm-tingling tension of a 10 lap race - and palm-tingling it turned out to be.
We managed to hook up first time and took our places on the grid. With only 6 cars in the race I was optimistic of an interference free event, but with nearly 20 mins worth of track time you never can tell.
The start proved to be hassle-free and so I found myself maintaining position 1 through the first lap until the bus-stop. You may not agree, but I find that this is the trickiest combination on this circuit. And so it proved throughout our race.
Fearful of spinning so early in the race I was fairly hesitant this first time around, and I suspect that I braked a little earlier than WD was expecting. We had a little contact from which WD seemed to suffer the most and I took the opportunity to pit.
Incredibly I came out of the pits still in the lead and so pitted the next time around as well. As I was exiting I could see WD's car coming round the first corner - I tucked in a few lengths behind him and prayed I could hold my nerve. With WD needing to do both stops I just had to kep it clean and I was home and dry, surely?
That's all well and good but there were still 8 laps to go.
I didn't want to see it, but I could tell that WD was faster than me before pitting for the first time. He's going to win, I thought. 'Keep it clean, keep it clean - drive your own race,' was the mantra going through my head.
Before he pitted for the second time I had almost managed to catch him and felt that I would have a big enough gap to get me through the race.
Throughout the next few laps WD cranked up the pressure, appearing larger in my mirrors with every passing corner. My one glimmer of hope appeared to be the bus-stop which I seemed to get through carrying more speed than him into the final banked turn. And so it proved - on lap 7 going through that fateful combination he was suddenly gone from my mirrors.
Three laps without a mistake and I would be home and dry. I hadn't figured on the other participants in the race however. With one lap to go I was catching two scrapping cars ahead of me, and it was again the bus-stop which added a final twist. Just managing to avoid a spinning BMW on the previous corner I was catching an F430 which spat up a load of dust. The back end went loose, I was fighting to stay in control - I pictured someone falling over a cliff, 'Nooooooooooooooooo', and imagined the sight of WD cruising past for the win.
The grip returned, and hanging on for grim death I crossed the line for the win.
Needless to say that during the race I posted my fastest ever lap of either free practice or racing. You pushed me all the way, WD - and if it hadn't been for the bus-stop incident I feel sure you would have had me fair and square. 👍
Thanks to EDK Kevin for a great combo, and thanks too to Aki for posting the video of his race - I learnt a lot from it.
Happy racing everyone
