Division 4 silver vs. bronze/GTP_Liston vs. GTP_Bigracer

This afternoon Mike and I had our races.
First race he made a small error in the 3rd lap costing him a penalty, so I won.
Second race, some drafting and competitive racing, he won.
Third race (still trembling hands while writing :D) I kept the lead tho not by much and was saved by the ticking clock of the ending race.

GTP_Liston 1 - GTP_Bigracer 2

Thanks Mike for some thrilling racing and sorry for that slight love hug I gave you out there.

Steven......👍

Congrats mate....for the win, Now I just hope i win my race too and may be we meet the next round.

Better luck GTP_Liston next time and gongrats for your progress so far

 mate

Lots of races run so far in this round. 👍

I've updated the participants and pairings and race specifics threads to reflect progress to date.

Just 3 division final races left to run - D1, D4 and D5. 👍

Well done to all for keeping this on track.

Div 2 Silver vs Bronze: Cohiba100 vs Synwraith

Hooked up on the second attempt. I got the lead from the start and held it through the first lap, much because Synwraith held back. Pitted at the end of it. Maz apparently put in a good lap and pitted at the end of the second lap only to find out that some punter had blocked (deliberately obviously) the narrow pit exit. Maz got a ramming penalty and lost maybe ten seconds and that was that. He later ran into another punter to make it even worse.

I could back off nearly 1,5 seconds a lap and cruise home to victory.

In the after-race-chat we decided to do e re-race to see if we could get a cleaner one in.

Maz took the start in this one and when coming to the bus stop for the first time I was a bit too close and spun out. Maz was a real gentleman and waited for me to catch up. 👍

Don't remember the pit strategy in this one other than Maz pitting on the first lap. All pit stops done we found ourselves with Maz leading with a little less than two seconds. I managed to catch his draft and when we started seventh (I think) we were together but unfortunately on the heels of a Subaru. This one managed to take out Maz and I passed. I was thinking of waiting for him but before I had decided the same Subaru put me in the barrier as well so that was decided for me. The Subaru spun off in turn one the following lap and we were left to race it out for the final laps with me leading with slightly more than 2 seconds, just outside of drafting distance. I also seemed to have better traction coming out on the banking. The last three laps consisted of me doing my utmost to keep him far enough back to not catch my slipstream and him doing the exact opposite. He did catch it at the final banking but it was too late and I won by a second or so.

All in all a fun race with two very evenly matched opponents.

Thanks Maz 👍

Great write-up Thomas, and I have to say this race highlighted the very big difference between the good guys online and the bad guys.

We had agreed beforehand that punters and bad drivers were part of OLR and we would not rerun. Despite the guy at the end of the pitlane and the GTR causing me no end of headaches and disaster, I was happy to let Cohiba have the victory, he had earned it by driving beautifully, consistently and fast.

But GTP_Cohiba100 is an absolute gentleman and an example of what online racers should be like, he said he did not want to win this way and offered a re-run. I was so nervous for the first race that my hands were shaking while holding the pad. The second race, in my mind I had already been kinda defeated so I was much more relaxed and ran a far better race.

After we had both made our pitstops I was as Thomas says about 2 seconds ahead, and should have wrapped it up from there. But the Subaru in front made life terrible for me and I had to swerve to avoid his blocking, got a wheel on the grass, end of story. I did see him drive Thomas off the road as well. I have no problem with you not waiting Thomas when the Subaru got me, you had already more than earned your victory through gentlemanly behaviour. That's why I waited for you on the first lap when you spun at the bus stop, there was no way I could drive off to a victory after your sporting attitude in the first race.

I am terribly disappointed and gutted  But I could not have lost to a nicer guy, and you know, your driving was immaculate. You were really fast, and absolutely 100% deserving of your victory. I have a feeling on a day like today we could have run many times and you still would have won.

I also feel good because I have met and raced with another person who I consider to be a credit to the GT community, you're a great guy Thomas and I really look forward to racing you again. I'll be supporting you in this tournament :D

Thank you to my excellent T&L teammates and Kevin(EDK) for this awesome tournament. I have had the pleasure of racing gentleman of the quality of GTP_Sjaak, EDK himself, my old mate Matt GTP_MJH and of course GTP_Cohiba100, a worthy addition to any racer's friends list 👍

I am very happy with Division 2 Bronze champion as a title, and my final personal best in the 512BB was 1'48.817 clean.

All the best

Congratulation Cohiba

Unlucky Maz, great run you had and all the best to cohiba....:)👍

nice one Thomas.. you're kind to re-run 👍 CONGRATULATIONS

Maz you shouldnt have waited and you could won... im kidding... waiting for him was the best you could do 👍 you have paid to thomas almost in the same coin... he gave you the chance to beat him re-running and you repay him waiting! to both

Question to Kevin: what will happen after the division championship round? 5 players will be left. All against all in a 1:1 setup or one superfinal with all 5 together?

BTW. The 512BB seemed much looser to me in a race than in freerun. Did anyone else notice this?

Yeah a little bit, but then I found it to be a shade faster in the race than free run. More consistency in free run definitely, but that's because I didn't have the distraction of trying to catch an opponent or pull a gap, or check where the next car is. The increase in required awareness in a race makes a difference I think.

Thanks to all for the kind comments 👍

Still head to head races. We tested some races with 3 at once, but the 2 lead racers have a significant advantage.

Will be D2 v D3 and D4 v D5. Winners of those races face off. Winner of all of it faces D1 champion for the overall championship.

I've an idea 💡

How about a time trial 1st as a qualifier for the grid position, then 3 races at DR 10 laps each with 2 pit stops for every racer....points decide the podiums, I know it will be fun, exciting and with some GTP spectators we can make sure there's no out siders :dopey:

I would have thought that since its been 1:1 racing all along, that the winner of Div5 vs Div4 would race the Div3 champion, the winner of that would race the Div2 champion and the winner of that would race the Div1 champion.

It's not fare , this means that div.1 is the king of the ring and he has to wait for all to race, but having all racing together at the same time is fare for all and better with the presence off 2 pit stops for each racer :) the heat will be high.

There's never been a published structure, just what I had envisioned when setting up the event. Theoretically, we could just be done after this week. But before deciding for certain, I'll await the outcome of the remaining races and see what the update brings.

I might just put up a poll to let the remaining participants make some decisions.

The idea behind class races, then division races, and finally overall was to keep the races really competitive and to have several ways to win throughout the event.

Out of more than 100 entrants, we had just 15 class champions. There will only be 5 division champions.

As with sports, those who perform the best and have proven themselves in advance will have the shortest road to travel. So Division 1 has already proven themselves as faster than the rest, anyone who wants to knock them off will have to work harder to do that.

Well, the 3 lap races certainly make for intense racing. Myself and BigRacer went head to head, and after some firm but fair paint swapping I made it through to win the first race.

All credit to BigRacer, he stuffed me good and proper in the second and third to take the Div 4 title. Respect to our champion! 👍

Best of luck in the next round, and huge thanks to EDK for organising a thoroughly engaging competition.

Right, I need to drown my sorrows - where's the vodka? :)

Division 4 final: GTP_Twisted vs. GTP_Bigracer

This evening Llewellyn and I did our online races for the Division 4 final. We did some nice 'paint swapping' as he nicely put it, and tried to behave like real gentlemen on the track in which we sort of succeeded :D

First race, Twisted won by a car's lenght after swapping positions.
Second race, he screwed up somewhere in the final lap costing him a penalty.
Third race (trembling again ), I touched him somewhere causing him a penalty. I braked to wait for his penalty to end then followed again. Managed to overtake somewhere, then he slammed the wall somewhere making him chanceless :yuck:

We reviewed and shook hands, Llewellyn calling himself names, wishing me all the best for the remainder of the event.

Thanks for some thrilling and neck-to-neck racing Llewellyn

Agree to the fullest.
We can stop now after the division championships, or for the heck of it do a wise-ass final round between the div champs. To eliminate the starting position advantages we could do two things.

1. return to the starting line after the rolling start and all start from the starting line, shoulder to shoulder, or
2. do multiple races where each contender has alternating starting positions.

Just my $0:02. In fact I'm already so happy to have made it so far that all decisions Kevin might make will be fine by me 👍

Just to enable me to do the big thank you speach I'll do a small write up on this race even though the result is already known.

Division championship Div. 2 Sauber-F1 vs Cohiba100

Sauber-F1 joined and watched the race between myself and Synwraith and afterwards we decided to do our Division championship right away. I had raced Sauber three or four times before and only ever seen the backside of the Ferrari disappear in the distance ahead so I knew I had my work cut out.

We set off, Sauber clearly hung back at the start. Coming out on the banking for the first time he passed me and as usual I lost it in the bus stop chicane first time through. Sauber also proved himself a true gentleman by waiting for me until I sorted it out. 👍 He pitted at the end of the first lap and I took the lead and pitted by the end of the second. When I came out I was just out of drafting reach. A totally undramatic race then followed for the next eight laps where Sauber increased his lead by half a second per lap until he had about five seconds and then just backed off a bit and ran the same lap times as I did. I pitted for the second time before him even though I was just four seconds behind at that time and would easily have caught up to him had I awaited his second stop, but I also knew that it was unlikely that he could be stressed to do any mistakes by my presence and even if he did I would of course have to wait for him in order to return the favour from earlier and I knew he would never ever do two mistakes in one race. He was also on R2s as opposed to my R3s so he would have a better speed if it ever came down to a drag race to the line. I therefore decided to try and do the best laps I could in free air to finish off with at least some dignity. In the end Sauber won with a little over five seconds. We finished in first and second place. The number three car on the track was 25 seconds and a lap down... My race was, except for the mishap in the bus stop, troublefree and without question the fastest I've done in the 512BB with the final four laps all in the mid 49s so there is no doubt whatsoever that the fastest driver won this particular race.

Congratulations Sauber-F1, Division 2 champion (and well deserved)

Also a big thanks to Kevin for organising a great event. I'm already looking forward to Race Event 03

Am I wrong or the Div 5 champion is still to be decided (between Marooned and DaddyUVB) ?
