McLaren MP4-27 launch

Whatever it is it looks like it is channeling air to the floor of the car, and probably back to the diffuser, I don't know how legal that will be...

Perhaps that could be what Mclaren were worried about someone protesting.

Sorry for the oversized image, but really that thing under the nose is very interesting!
I'm guessing it's designed to scoop up air, pressurise it and push it over the splitter (the tongue extending forward under the cockpit) to generate more downforce.

Looks kinda like alternate version of ground effect aero to me.

I think you nailed it mate! Also, as suggested by F1 fan that might be the thing that is currently being protested.

Well not yet anyway, but rumours surfaced that Mclaren were worried something would be protested. The fact that the article was removed from Autosport means it's either true, or a complete fabrication.

Oh, look it's not a scoop!

I just noticed it has also been removed from ESPNF1...

She's pretty - no stepped nose, as near as I can tell.

Care to provide any pictures possible?

Edit: Phone loaded wrong page..

I've noticed that some of the rear bodywork goes right up to the rear diffuser, and it appears that there are small openings angled just above it. Once of the things Red Bull did last year was route air that went through the sidepods over the gearbox to provide cooling - they had a basketball-sixed opening in the rear bodywork. I think McLaren are going in the opposite direction, with smaller openings over the diffuser to create a simulated EBD using pressurised air. I wouldn't be surprised if the channel that starts with the sidepod and ends over the diffuser is designed to force air over the diffuser to create downforce.

It's just very difficult to tell, since the teams like to keep the rear ends of their cars as quiet as possible.

You can't really see it in this photo, but the car looks like it has a very bizarre nose. It appears that there is a piece of bodywork extended back from the centre of the front wing to some point under the safety cell.

Fantastic side-profile

On no, that thing under the nose isn't new... Thought at first it was a scoop, then just a sort of divider. Still, I didn't notice of it being on last year's car

Now the rear is catching our attention..

Try this for comparison, MP4-27 (top) and MP4-26 (bottom). Much tighter rear package - phnarr phnarr!

Possible shorter wheelbase. I matched the wheel diameters on the cars to get a decent comparison and the MP4-27's wheelbase looks a couple of inches shorter.

Black wheels now... Is that to hide something (though aren't the wheels homologated now?) or just a standard colour change?

Nothing much have change apart from new sidepod, rear wing and new front nose...visibly.

McLaren said that the car is an evolution of the MP4-26 so nothing much is expected. Now they've sort of following the steps of Red Bull making an evolution of cars instead of starting from scratch every single year...

About black wheels, no I don't think they're hiding anything behind there.

It looks like the front wheel may have been pushed back to accommodate a longer nose.
