And the Skyline's on Test Course. How in the love of God can you over rule that yellow S.O.B!

There's a tip floating around on one of the pages in this topic, I used it last night to finally beat that mission:

Draft past the cars, line up in front of them, slow down SLIGHTLY (to about normal top speed +-163MPH) and let them draft up to YOU and pass you on the following straightaway. Reapeat this until the last lap where by the end of the back straight you should be drafting up on the yellow GTR. :sly:

Thanks to reading this thread at work yesterday I went home last night and beat it THE SECOND TIME I tried!

The first time I cut down too fast and caught my right rear on the left front of another Skyline and damn near spun out at 170MPH

It works! HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!! 👍

I beat mission 34 two days ago (and every other one for that matter).

Basically, its 10x easier to win if you use MT. You can control the car better, you can brake faster, you carry better corner speed... etc etc etc.

Use the split times to see where your losing time, thats how I was able to beat it.

I was in a similar boat. On my first try I finished like 38 secs behind. Then 27, 21, 18.... kept practicing. Eventually I consistently finished 5-8 secs off and couldnt figure out how to fix my problems...

Then I decided it was time to try MT. Previously, I figured AT would be easier since its so long and theres lots of shifting... but I quickly found out that I was wrong.

On my third try in MT I finished 3 secs down... with a 5 sec penalty from running into the back of a car...

Less than 10 more tries and I got it. I can't give you video but I can give you an extremely detailed description of how to run each section, and what split times to expect, as well as when you should expect to pass each car.

PM me or just ask in the thread so we can make these pointers public.

P.S. I found that in some sections the fastest way around involves taking some grass/ carefully riding walls. You dont have to do this to beat it. But i tried this way and I was able to beat it by 3 secs, so it is faster... but its also sometimes harder to retain control. If youre just looking for a way to beat the mission, I'll resort to giving you the fastest way around... although the purist in me tells me thats "cheating" if you can beat it even with using these techniques your good enough to make it acceptable.

ereet, I've had those times on a sticky note on the tv to help me!

does anyone have/can anyone get a time trial practice checkpoint time list? like I know the first one is about 1:45 and another later on is 2:40... I was wondering could anybody hook it up with a full list?

and also, ereet. I practiced last night with the settings you listed... but when I go back to the mission it still seems more squirly than the practice runs. somethings not right, perhaps S1 tires all around?

If you want time trial splits just take off 2min for each one.

During this run i had 2, 5second penalties :(.

wow which version of GT4 are u running 9.14.380 is not anywhere close to beating mission 34 when i ran it... the first spot guy kept doing 9:13.000, and i had to do 9:12.xxx

Ive got a PAL, and i use DS2.

i got 2, 5 second penalties and my run wasnt very good. i bet i could improve it heaps.

Give me a time to aim for and i will do that and produce the info from that run

Fryz, did you WIN with that time?

I thought it was posted earlier in this thread that to win you need like 9:07ish.

My car runs 9'13.5 pretty much every time. If you passed him at 9'02, you must have beaten him by a fair amount as well. :ill:

One of my friends was 3 seconds off beating it and his lines are very similar to mine, he just a) uses MT, and b) uses a little more throttle/braking control. I'm going to switch to MT later tonight and give it some goes to see how it improves me.

yeah i won with that time.

Im gonna run it again and see if i can get 9:07 or whatever

I just ran a 9:08.xxx (won by over 9seconds), would you like me to writeup split times and times behind driver?

I'm good for a close race, let me work off the skittish MT problems. My first 3 splits were:

1'50.7 - (Sambertos: 1'49.9)
1'42.7 - (Sambertos: 1'40.8)
1'33.4 - (Sambertos: 1'32.9)

That was my third run with manual transmission, and I fell off the track after section #3 :) .. but needless to say, those're better than my best AT times on my 3rd try, so MT is definately the way to go.

I'm most likely going to be doing it via some cheeze across-the-grass / round the karusel methods unless my MT improvements don't slow down anytimes soon. I seem to be doing these sections very consistantly, in fact better (ie, I thought I was slow and got the same ones) on a good run.

Man Im so stuck on Misson 34, I just cant beat it. I dont even come close to seeing other cars! I'm always at least 21 seconds behind leader and no matter hard hard I push the car i still lose, man this is so fustrating!

I got the SL65 on the karusel and bumped him for a 5 second penalty. First time I've caught him there, so manual transmission is definately the way to go.

8'33 behind on my last run of about 10. Manual is soooooooooo much better than automatic, and I can't wait to get my runs a bit tighter with it. :dopey:

Its kinda funny to see so many people complain about the brakes not working so good, people complained about GT3's brakes were too strong. This is proof that PD will never please everyone.

yah man i'm running NTSC with DFP, maybe some differences with regards to the region and whether the cars are faster/shower when your using a diff controller.. but my guy will run consistent 9:13's and i'm doing 9:12's

oh well it's all good. Mission 34 was quite fun!

yeah, there has got to be a difference between the PAL and NTSC versions of the game. it is hard enough to be back only 1:48 by the first interval, but on the other hand, Small_Fryz is getting there with a time interval of 1:42. not to put down his driving skill, but ive played enough to know that it is really hard to believe its possible with the NTSC version of the game that i have.

After several hours of punching my PS2 in the face for being ridiculous, I finally found the solution to mission #23 and I can express it in words.

Let the AI cars pass you ONCE AND ONLY ONCE per straight per lap. This take the first turn on the first lap, PASS the cars (but don't get so far ahead that they can't draft you after the turn), then let them draft you and pass you. Enter the next turn and get ahead of the AI cars coming out of it. Be far ahead of them coming out of the next turn so they can draft you and pass you ONCE on this lap.

Lather, rinse, repeat until you're done.

>>>> The key is to let them pass you ONCE AND ONLY ONCE per straight per lap. <<<<

Now on to beating this asenine mission 34. Stupid SL600, could that suspension be ANY SOFTER?? ARGH!

You are my hero. You've saved another playstation from being hurled needlessly out the window.

YESSS!! I Just beat him by .005 sec!!

The first times I plaed the mission, I kept the cars close behind me thinking the draft would be better if they were closer. Wrong, all they did was slow down because they were too close to me. My key was to pass the cars during the turn and keep ahead of him far enough away but not too far away so that they can catch your draft and pass you by the middle of the next straight. Using this, i was able to ditch the pack during turn 1 of lap 3 and just hugged the inside of the turns till i got close and drafted him to the finish..!! Such a great feeling victory!!

HOLY ****ING S**T, I DID IT!

No time to discuss as I need to be getting to work. But when I get home I will begin on a fully detailed writeup complete with pictures AND (for the unfortunate ones like myself who are unable to do anything with replay files like Samberto's) a full length video. I will begin a thread containing all this in the writeup section. So look foreward to it in the coming few days.

I can give a quick tip though:

for those who are trying to practice with the car outside of the mission... ereet posted some good advice on turning the ASM off and putting S1 tires on the rear. He said to leave the TCS on and so I left it alone, but it was still off. The default TCS setting is 5 but after some tweaking, I realize that the closest feel I could find was to set the TCS down to 3, or maybe even 2. With, of course, both ASMs down to 0. I practiced with S2s in front and S1s in rear, but I'm thinking that perhaps S1s all around might be even closer.

So in short... ASM off / TCS on 3 / Sport Mediums on the front / Sport Hards on the rear

Here is a detailed guide for running mission 34 in MT (including ways to cut the course if you really just want to get this done). I'll probably have to make it into 3 or 4 separate posts, but just copy and paste it into a word processor file if you really need all this help.

1st split section:
Drive to the first corner, take it in 2nd gear, continue down the track (and shift into 3rd) into the next 2 right handers. For the 2nd of the two, you should have to brake a slight amount before entry, but then run through it at full throttle.

Follow the course around the slight left bend and head for the quick left then right which is just ahead. You should still be in 3rd gear as you approach. As you near the turn, downshift to 2nd, brake hard, and run a line as far to the left as possible for the slight left. You should then be able to run nearly full throttle (in 2nd gear) around the inside of the right hander, which will cause your exit to be out on the left side of the track.

Continue accelerating and shift to 3rd gear. First short cut: instead of following the winding road, stay on the pavement and then when it bends to the left, stay to the right in the grass (right next to the right side wall). As you approach the left turn ahead, downshift to 2nd, brake, turn hard, and you should be able to slide right through the turn without running off the track on exit.

Upshift to 3rd, continue down the very short straight near the center, and as you approach the next corner, downshift to 2nd and brake slightly (you dont need to brake for long because you dont need to slow down as much) and make the right turn with your wheels up on the corner strip. Take the left hander onto the straight and shift to 3rd. Continue running down the hill and at the bottom, shift to 4th gear.

This is the end of the first section. You should have completed it with a split time of 1:48.75x-1:49.75x. Anywhere in there and your doing fine.

2nd split section:
So here's what I consider the beginning of the 2 sections where you are most likely to screw up (spin out, lose lots of time).

You should be in 4th gear running up the hill. The best line is to be in the middle of the road. As you crest, you catch a slight bit of air. This is tricky: as soon as you land, you need to downshift to 3rd, brake hard but not for very long, and speed through the next two right handers. DO NOT run up onto the inside corner strips of these corners, many times its makes you slide off the course. You should be taking this corner at a considerable speed (about 110 on entry of the first corner, about 115 on exit of the first corner).

Continue up the hill onto the long fast section. Wait to shift into 4th until after you crest the las hill. You should shift into 4th when your speed hits 148/149 MPH. Continue and make sure to run straight over the slight lift ahead.

The next corner is very fast. When you get close, downshift to 3rd and brake hard, then turn and accelerate through the corner. You pretty much slide the whole way through, but its not hard to control. (Speed through corner should be about 135 MPH).

Shortly after the turn ends, you need to downshift to 2nd and full brake for a considerable amount of time. You'll exit the previous corner on the right side of the track, so dont bother trying to relocate for entry into the turn, just stay straight and focus on slowing down. Once the car has slowed down enough, continue through the turn and then upshift to 3rd and continue downhill.

This is the end of the 2nd split section. If you time is around 1:39-1:40.6 you still in ok shape.

3rd split section:
Continue down the hill and downshift to 4th. When you get to the bottom, curve to the left and then line up on the right side of the course. When you start to pass the uphill section with the corner strip on the right side, downshift to third and brake, then aim for the left inside corner at the top of the hill. You should be able to ride right over this and keep speed, and youll end up exiting on the right side after cresting. Continue for a short distance, then downshift into 2nd and start following the right hander.

2nd short cut: Instead of following the course through this set of S's just take the grass through the middle in 2nd. When the course bends back and heads to the right, just make sure that you have your car as line up as possible when you re-enter the track to minimize the amount that you slide. Shortly after you renter the course, youll need to shift to third.

This is the end of the 3rd split section. You should now have a time from anywhere between 1:29.5xx-1:32.75x. However, if you are running everything well, you should expect to be at about 1:30.25-1:31.000. At this rate, you are well on your way to passing Mission 34.

This is the end of the first part of my mission guide... although this should maybe be in write-ups, ive decided to put it here since it seems appropriate. Hope I'm helping. The next set of splits will be soon, and The whole thing will probably be done in the next couple of hours... if not, by tomorrow night.

I was thinkin that all you guys who say "practice" were just turds...but I've been working on Mission 11 for about an hour now. Finally got it down to where I'm only 2 seconds behind the leader. Ugh... man this is a pain.
