Interesting reading the continued comments in here. Seems that a lot of people really hate the handling.

It's certainly not as good as GT5 but as long as you're using a force-feedback wheel, it's not as bad as people are making out. Depends on the car too of course, I've driven the Lexus LF-A in the game a few times and it's quite frustrating as it understeers quite a bit even at lowish speeds, but at the same time, the Porsche 997 GT3 RS and Porsche Cayman which I've been using a fair bit recently both feel great, gives you a good impression of driving the actual cars. The old Mercedes 2.5 Evo is good too, and I've a fully-tuned E36 M3 that feels pretty good also.

You definitely, definitely need a wheel to get the most from the game. If you're using a joypad, it's a very frustrating game to get to grips with and not particularly enjoyable.

Collisions are also ridiculous. GT5 is off one end of the "slightly crappy" end of the scale when crashing, NFS goes off the other end where you've more sense of an impact, but then the cars feel like they're magnetically attached and it's difficult to stop crashing once you've started.

Having spent a fair bit of time playing the game now (my autolog shows 7 hours gameplay or thereabouts) I'm glad I got the game free! I probably wouldn't own it if I'd had to buy it full price...

I would like to thank everyone in the company and especially those people that decided to have this trophy/achievement! It was truly a genius decision!

I can see that I have only spent 1d 09h in offline playing these events, which obviously is not much for a racing game. I have managed to get all the trophies with the exception of Bounty Hunter and King of the Hill and I have completed the career and earned a whopping $6,000,000 in total.

But hey, what is $4,000,000 when you can get from 900 to 27,000 dollars for winning a race! Obviously we like that you can only earn the 27k on the hard level and it takes around 3 minutes of track time. Plus of course the inevitable one minute of reloading the same track every time.

If we do our calculations, it turns out we only need to play that race 149 times to get the money. Pff, piece of cake, innit. But then again, what is 596 minutes in the context of our busy lives? Pretty much nothing. It's only a 100 hours. Imagine what fun would it be to dedicate 2 hours a day for the next 50 days doing the same race over and over and over and over again!

@ cypher2004: I just thought I'd lighten up your life by telling you some good news - 596 Minutes is nowhere near 100 hours. In fact, its not even 10!

So now you can get the incredibly important platinum trophy and life 90 hours of your life to do other important things! Hooray!

And to all the others: I m a bit shocked noone else in the "thanks"-thread realized that... :D

Besides the unstanble cars in the replays and the imput lag...
...The AI sticky cars are really getting to me...
Sometimes I get pushed of the track and I watch the replay just to find out I wasnt pushed I was sucked off the track...👎:grumpy: :ouch:
Other than that and a few freezes the game is really fun, I hope the patch fixes this things:)

Oh yes, tribolik, thats a pain in the behind! How I hate that stupid magnetic effect! What in the name of all thats holy were they thinking when they did that?!

Also, I m not truly fed up with the livery editor. I spent several hours trying to remake some beautiful classic liveries like Lotus John Player Special, Audi Trans Am/DTM etc (see livery thread :D) and everytime I use a car, all the angles of the graphical elements get completely screwed up. WTF?! You got to be kidding me, SMS - not only is this POS livery editor a nightmare to use, now its also rendered completely pointless by not even correctly keeping the livery you painfully crafted? GTFO, thats just seriously bad programming and a true letdown! 👎

Please dont tell me that:scared:... Ive just spent 3 hours making a livery for my Porsche spyder works

And whats up with the FFB - theres some excelent stuff when it comes to enviromental effects (better than GT5) and then theres a center spring and an on and off effect for whatever they are trying to simulate (if it was only when we lock the breaks but it is not), I remember Shift 1 had a more progressive feel (even if the FFB wasnt all that great)

Some games you either Love or Hate and that is a good thing it means the game is good and has personality but this one I Love and Hate... I Love the concept and some features... but the bugs are killing it, I should have waited for the second of third patch before buying it, like I did with the first.

Man, this is sounding even worse than GT5.. and I thought that was the biggest disappointment of any racing game..

Once again another claim to beat Gran Turismo ends up being bollocks. Nothing will top GT.

At least Shift 2 is better than the 1st. I found an improvement in response when I adjusted the steering settings, 1% dead spot & 0% on whatever the other thing was, can't remember now.

Still fatally flawed. Do these guys actually drive real cars? It would appear not.

The handling is awful in this game. I can't feel the car at all. In gt5 I can tell if a car is going to oversteer or understeer and produce both on demand. In this game all i get is a disconnected slide that feels like I'm driving a Jay Leno tank car in every race. I've tried steering assist on and a lot of the wheel setups posted here as well as tuning cars. Nothing helps this. I'm done with this game. How much do you guys think I could get for it on ebay?

I only have two 24 hour races to do to finish GT5 and I only at 50% in Shift 2 but even with all the bugs I enjoy Shift 2 much more than GT5, so in my book (or IMO) they sure beat Gran Turismo...

...and if the patch fixes my grips then Im selling my copy of GT5 :)

Great, another one drawing conclusions without even having tried the game. 👎

Sounds like you've never even tried it. Opinion not worth noting.

$1,000,000 You two have never taken a car around a race-track in real life.

Shift 2 was sold as a SIM. It fails to emulate realistic driving physics.
You wouldn't know that because you don't have any real-life experiences to compare it to.

You don't know better. That is the crux of your opinions.

Just played one round of shift 2 and....sorry but this is horrible. Okay maybe that sounds harsh as it is not total crap but Shift 1 was better for starters. Shift 2 is just weird. The graphics are not as good as GT5, though I could live with that if it were not for the silly handling! They should have just focused on their own style than saying they were going to be better than GT5, which means in the simulation of physics. So I went into it expecting great physics. I would rate Forza 3 ahead of this. The trailers and previews made it all sound so good and fun. I guess if I want fun then I need to find a car game like mario kart. Other than that I guess I enjoy the 'simulation' games more, i.e. Gran Turismo.

I'll give it another go after I've calmed down a bit. :-)

I love the game mind you but there are some rants for me:

1# I am tired of the AI ramming me off track. Seems like the best way to win most races is just to make sure you immediately take the desired position (like #1/first place ideally) but failing getting 1st place, just hold the podium position once acquired and just make sure to keep blocking the AIs behind you. It seems that if you totally hold the best line they won't try to overtake overly much which reduces the risks of them bumping into you and sending you off track.

To help alleviate this issue I turned down my FFB. Previously I had it set to 100% so all it took was a little bump from the AI and I go off track

#2 Can't use my wheel to use Drift it appears so far. Might try again. But tried for a long time and couldnt get pass. I dont want to use a controller

#3 They made it so the AI always ramp up to give you a challenge which was a smart move for the most part. However, I do have the AI set to "Easy" mode which in my mind means I should be able to easily get through the races. But they still give me a tough time. I keep thinking the difficulty setting is broken?

$1,000,000 You two have never taken a car around a race-track in real life.

$2,000,000 you also haven't driven a car around a real life race track with two joysticks and some shoulder buttons as controls. Yet, somehow it's still possible to have a valid opinion about it.

What was your point again?

Ok so Im totally fed up with the track cutting nonsense in this game. It is 100% the most annoying thing in this game.
Heres a video I just made of me attempting the endurance race at Brno:

This pissed me off so much I made a video about. And its is very hard to motivate me to do anything.
As you can see the game is horribly inconsistent at recognising cuts and simple run offs.

Another small gripe is with Windows 7. I see they decided to drop Windows Movie Maker from the preinstalled programs. The good thing is that they allow you to download it for free. However, it comes in a pack called "Windows Live Essentials". If the are so essential then why werent they included in the software when you purchase it?

^That indeed would be bothersome to me.

Looks like the Gumpert is sliding on the track as if on ice. It doesn't seem right to me. Is it like this for all the cars or just the modded and supercars?

I normally don't compliment people for how well they complain, but gentlemen: THAT is how gripping should be done.

His complaint is right on.

But his inputs don't look smooth at all and is making the car slide around the track.

If you want to see a smooth and (ridiculously) fast lap in S2U, watch Haehre's lap here:

I think the way penalty works is this:

If 3 wheels are outside of the track its a penalty. I've looked closely enough and it does seem the times you got penalty is when your right rear tire was VERY slightly off track, however when you didn't only 2 wheels where off track. So it might be very sensitive, but not inconsistent.

Edit:
Hm...I might be wrong though as I looked some more and it might be more complicated than that. Maybe you can ask that at nogripracing and see if Griff can give you more insight into how track cutting is determined and if this is a bug or a sensitivity issue?

I am still enjoying this game, but I have to say that some of the cars which you just want to be able to enjoy cant be enjoyed because of the physics, eg: you want to correct and control the Koenigsegg's twitchy tail on the fly but for some reason its planted in this game :S

Another thing that is totally wrong is the 'racing line' that is used in this game, it isn't actually the racing line, it doesn't ruthlessly grab every millimeter of track and apex that is available at your disposal or come perilously close to scraping the walls which stare you down or clipping those tyres at Enna Pergusa. You should be hopping the kerbs at the chicanes and running the exit rumble strips into the ground, not finishing the corner one or two meters shy of it.

Yeah, they said it themselves that the racing line is for you to get familiar with the track and when to brake. If you want to "learn" the track and really shave those seconds off the lap you have to do it yourself, which seems reasonable. Otherwise it feels like cheating, doesnt it? After I've driven on most tracks a couple of times racing line went to "Off" :)

I think the sliding can be put down to three things:
- I set my cars up for oversteer, it suits my driving style and I do the same thing in real life with karts.
- The reason I am going sideways is because I am pushing hard into the corners, if you have driven an Apollo, you would know that it has amazing brakes, and they make you want to push them to the limits, and as a result, I am probably taking to much speed into the corner, making it slide. I dont believe in SLIFO. SLow In, Fast Out.
- The way the camera hangs of the back of the car, it seems as though it is focused on the roof of the car rather than fixing itself on the rear. I dont think it would look as sideways as it actually is. I think this because I can see the side of the car when it is turning.

Dont get me wrong, Im all for penalising cheaters etc etc. I just dont see the point in penalising people for what is clearly a mistake. Especially those ones around turns 4 & 5 in the video. It is the inconsistency that annoys me. That being said, the stupid thing about the aforementioned turns 4 & 5 is that running wide doesnt even give you an advantage. Especially on the exit of 5 because out there it is grass and you cant get the power down if youre out there.

I have found that if you know you are about to take a cut, if you stop or slow down in the middle of the part you are cutting, you can avoid the penalty, so I guess this means that the game has some sort of knowledge on gaining advantages etc from cutting tracks.

Another thing is that on tracks like Donington Park, you can cut out whole sections of the track with no penalty.

I've now had it on the PS3 and then Xbox both with a FFB wheel and def prefer the FFB on the xbox. Apart from that there's not much in it betweent he two.

My biggest 2 gripes are:

The Magnetic cars as have been mentioned already. So frustrating to be driven off the track in this way while trying to break free.

Also not really being able to react to things in a way other games allow you to because of the delay in response from the cars, call it lag or bad car physics, but either way, having to pre-think the delay into a move is frustrating as hell and does kill some of the fun for me.

It's a shame as so much of this game is great and it's pretty simple things that are spoiling it for me. But then again GT5 is the same, just for different reasons.

What was your point again?

The way a car moves under braking, as it passes in and out of the threshold of grip, as it hunkers down at high speed, etc. These have nothing to do with joysticks or shoulder buttons.

Using a steering wheel controller is considered optimum to playing shift2 (or any racing simulation). By plugging one in however, are the physics corrected to a point where they simulate real life?

No. No they are not. Someone who appreciates and understands RL racing, looking for a simulation (as shift2 was sold) of that experience, must then be very confused by how things happening in shift2 do not correlate to real world expectations. Other sims do a good job of it. Shift2 does not.

Would you like me to explain my point a third time?

Probably distributed directly via EA's servers. It was a fast download, and not too big (35Mb on PS3 iirc).

Ah, didn't think about that. I've been used to getting all the patches while PSN was online so I was under the impression it was distributed through that. Definately will be downloading that when I get home.

Omg I have bought this game after playing Gt5 and I want to throw it in the bin! What a crap game seriously. Well I have only played it for 4 hours but I was doing ok when I got to the lotus Elise stage around Suzuka. This thing danced all over the road like it was floating....... What? Do a forum search and to find you have to tweak this setting and that setting...... What? I tweaked a few setting for my DFGT wheel and the car and let me say it did nothing much. I then though maybe I will try something else... Bought an Evo X tuned suspension, set wheel settings and done a few laps around Mt panorama (why I bought the game) no good so I put racing tyres on it and still no good. For one of the best handling cars around it still danced all over the road and the steering deadzone felt like I was driving a car from the 1960's with a broken steering rack. Yes I know there is a deadzone setting, and yes I played with it and a the other settings. It gets better...... Next lap I am flying to the second corner flat out and the game freezes ......... What?
My first experience with my DFGT on GT5 was on the Nürburgring with a tuned Ferrari with the strength set on 5. Let me tell u it nearly ripped my hands off.... Now with NFS the strength is set to 100% and it still feels like power steering......
i will persist with the settings until I find some happiness........ But I feel ripped off. Don't get me started on the helmet view....
