And i love it all the way. Shift 2 is more exited to me than GT5. I know it has issues with freezing and other problems with missing reward cash but still. Either you can love it or hate it.

Probably there is a point where i could start hate it but didn't reach it yet đź‘Ť

Exaggerate much? I found the steering with a controller gets a lot easier if you dial the steering lock all the way down to 10-14, depending on the car (it's on the second page of the tuning section).

The default settings are far too loose and slippery, but nothing that can't be tweaked. đź‘Ť

I fiddled with a few of the settings but found nothing that was anything other than immensely frustrating.

In contrast, I plugged my wheel in and it was a hundred times better straight away.

It's simply not a very satisfying game to play with a controller, but a very good one if you have a wheel. In all honesty GT5 is no different in this respect, though it's a hell of a lot more accurate than Shift is with a controller (probably too accurate, but that's a different story for a different thread).

I think unfortunately for the casual gamer, the general increase in realism in a lot of console games means they're becoming less suited for controller usage and better suited to a wheel. That's fine for me since I'm not a casual gamer (at least, not with racing games) and I do have a wheel, but I know a lot of my friends would be less keen on more recent racing games.

Some cars are just too expensive... >.>

Especially, when I don't receive the level up money rewards.

Sell some of your other cars. Remember that you get full sticker price for selling your cars in this game. Once you get to ~$1.8 million you can buy whatever you want, cash is just a limitation on how many cars you can own simultaneously. Getting to $1.8 million isn't trivial, but it's not terribly difficult.

I earned almost 4millions so far at 40% of the game. I earn a lot just by going back and try to beat Autolog times until I succeed or master a track or racing an event just because I like it.

But that bug (although I've either missed it or never happened) sure is nasty just because you can there's a trophy for having a car from each manufacturer which i find rather difficult as it is (upgrades cost money too :D)

Fortunately I don't have to buy 1000 cars to earn that trophy:sly:

I get the feeling EA spent way more money on advertising than they did on development of this game - and that QA was done by the developers themselves, not a separate department.

I have stopped playing this game now for the last 2 weeks, and won't be returning until they fix it.

NFS has more competition than just GT5 for me now that the summer is on it's way - there just is no comparison to real life driving on the track or even on countryside twisty back-roads when the sun comes out and you have 500+ hp under your right foot :)

There's a trophy for earning $10 million too.

Trophies shouldn't come into it. I know some people get all OCD about having every trophy, but not having trophies doesn't limit your gameplay in any way. You can still drive any car you want, trophy or no.

I've got another mini-rant about the manufacturer showdowns...

Its in the M3 E92 vs Audi one. When its standing at one round each and the rolling start for round 3 begins,
the cars clash before control is given to me and I get a dq!

Winning rounds 1 and 2 will of course avoid this scenario, but even so its a piece of programming lunacy :grumpy:

Great, another one drawing conclusions without even having tried the game. đź‘Ž

Well heres someone who BOUGHT the game and I have to say the physics are a disgrace! No wonder Stephane Ratel's people terminated their contract to produce the official game, they've made GT cars that are firmly planted to the track handle like cows on rollerskates!

Collisions are absolute nonsense, seems that SMS think that the cars are made from ducktape judging by the sticky nature of the collisions, if you think these collisions are realistic then you have never watched motorsport in your life nor have you ever driven a car in anger.

Alot of the tracks just don't look as they should, Bathurst and the Nordschleife are too wide and theres alot of straights and corners that are the incorrect length and width.

Alot of the cars handle incorrectly, the Radical is a complete mess, the Corvette Z06 is very rubbery and lot of the GT1 cars handle like pigs when they shouldn't at all (this is someone whos worked on a few of the cars talking). Some of the figures of performance appear to be given randomly too, according to this game the SUMO POWER GT1 car is only capable of 170mph, which is nonsense as it is one of the quickest in a straightline in FIA GT1, I think you'll find that it is infact the Corvette which is the weakest.

This game also seems to have cars flip over when they spin across the grass... we all know that this of course is b_ll_cks the only genuine cases in which a car will roll or blowover is side-on through gravel and high speen spinning.

And before you NFS/GT/FM//whateversillykidsdrivinggame fanboys decide to pass judgement on my post, take the following into consideration: I am someone who's worked with and driven GT3, GT2 and GT1 cars, I know how they handle and how they behave, a few of these exact same cars that I've worked on have ended up in this game. Yes, this is a GT forum site, but I am by no means a GT5 fanboy, come off it, a game that ignores the tyres contact patch with a road and doesn't even use any CAD or windtunnel data? I've seen and used proper simulators and if i was to rate this out of 10 purely on how well it 'simulates' in comparison to such proper simulators I would be hard pushed to give it even a 2, Forza and GT would only get a 3 to be brutally honest.

Hey brian,

I understand your opinion and I agree that there are a lot of "details" about this game, which are wrong. It is not an accurate simulation of every track and every car, and in stock form a lot of these cars are wrong (same was true with Shift 1 - it had a decent engine, but wrong data). Same goes for track width and all the rest.

I think most people playing this game have not actually driven a gt1 or a gt3 car, so people would not know a difference between how a Sumo Power Nissan handles vs. a Corvette. They might have a general idea, but very few people have driven them personally. So, what I'm saying is this, this game CAN be made A LOT more real if the proper data is used, which was shown by the Overhaul mod for Shift 1, which corrected A TON of bugs and inaccuracies with the vehicle data in that game, plus other various bugs. Whether it will be or not is yet to be seen. However, most people play games for fun. We are not all Tommy Milners or Mario Andrettis, who would use a game as a simulator to train for their races.

I completely agree with you that many cars may not handle like the real thing, however this does not mean that the game is not fun, nor does this mean that the game cannot be made more authentic by going through the data and fixing it or tuning cars. Look at GT5: many things are more "authentic" and even you rate it at "3" vs. a "2" simulation wise, however it's boring as hell :)

Absolutely, this game could have been a hell of a lot better interms of driving, it is entertaining, but no as good in driving as i would have hoped, ironically Tommy Milner endorsed this game and is getting ribbed the hell out of for doing so and spends more time on iRacing. There are alot of fans of GT/Endurance cars who will buy this game and know how the cars behave purely through observation and understanding, motorsports fan are usually very intelligent people, they surprise even the likes of us who work in the business.

Regards to the last bit, if you want realism/simulation then ofcourse its not going to be pretty or as amusing! lol

Hm...I think not necessarily. What I mean by fun is:
- Competitive AI, which I think is pretty good in Shift 2. Way better than many other racing games out there. It's not perfect but it keeps you on your toes most of the time.
- A big collection of cars to choose from. Yes, they may not compare to the real thing, but at least most of them have a different feel to them. iRacing, as far as I know, has a very limited selection of cars unfortunately.
- A variety of tracks. Again, maybe not perfectly modeled but there is a bunch to choose from and everyone may find some track they like.
- Free to play online (after the initial purchase). You don't have monthly fees like iRacing. I have to say that currently there are not many people online and a lot of the players like to "punt" you, but if you get a good group of friends some fun races can be had for a great price of $0 :)
- Autolog is a cool addition. Keeps you coming back to play the same track over and over again without it being "just because I have to beat all the A-spec races" mentality.

All these things can be built on top of a "sim" engine and I'd call the game fun. The game doesn't have to have simcade physics :)

Anyway, I think S2U is a pretty good package overall for $50 that I've paid for it. I've bought the rfactor recently just to see what it's like, based on your suggestion, but I just don't have enough to play it since S2U is keeping me entertained for a few weeks now. That game does seem to have a better physics engine (based on a few hours I've spent with the game), but I'm not sure it's a good overall package. I think out of the two "real sims", iRacing is probably a lot better deal game and fun wise, but I'm very reluctant to try it because of having to pay monthly for that game.

Some complaints I have:

  • Awkward starts on some tracks, where you either will go off track or hit something. At least GT5 and most race games give you sensible space.
  • Physics need serious help. There feels like a severe lack of adhesion as no matter what I did to add grip to the car like adding downforce and pumping up tire pressure and lowering ride height, they still slide. Sure I have no experiance in any high downforce, high horsepowe GT1 car (or GT3) but all the onboards I've seen in real life tell me unless there are worn tires, none of them slide nearly as much as this game depicts. For those to be the "best of the Best", they sure don't feel like it. Even in Tommy Milner's Autolog lap, you could clearly see he was sliding the car.
  • Sponsorship whoring. Seriously, why all the NFS, Speedhunters and Shift2 logos all over the real world tracks?(The only tracks I actually care about) I know for a fact they don't have them like that in real life, especially not on the track surface itself.
  • Very limited Decals (including no numbers). I was disappointed with NASCAR 2011 for this reason and unfortunately, it continues with this game. Even worse is that you can't paint all the cars. I would have really liked to recreate my Goodwrench Corvette C6.R on this game, but I unfortunately can't.
  • Terrible Photomode results. In game they look great, but when I download them to my computer, terrible. Its like the car had most of the life sucked out of it. I have to photoshop the things just so they can get their colors back.

+1 đź‘Ť

This game seems to serve as a penis-extension for Andy Blackmore and Speedhunters, how a so-called elite designer can go from working for Mclaren Mercedes to being involved in such self-celebratory and egotistical GUFF is unbelievable.

As for the decals, it's just pathetic, even NFS underground on ps2 had more decals.

I really only play these games online so my gripes are as follows:

Handling-I use a wheel(dfgt) and although most of the cars handle like sailboats its not a killer for me because you do get used to it and can do competitive and consistent lap times.
the killer for this game for me is the proximity bug in online racing, ie cars get rammed out of control when the cars clearly are nowhere near to touching but the lead car gets spun wildly and 95% of the time ends up facing the wrong way.I run in a racing league on gt5 and we were really hoping we could do some league racing on Mount Panorama but this issue makes it nigh on impossible to pass another car fairly. This might be why some of the tracks are wider than real life so it gives you enough room to try and make a fair overtake.

Hats off to EA marketing though they got me and all my racing mates to buy the game and after less than a week there is only one of us left playing it.Were all back on GT5 and have a far better appreciation of just how good that game is.

Conclusion-1.Like the autolog should be something similar in GT5
2.Online racing only good for a bit of fun racing(hack racing) but is extremely frustrating.
3.career mode will probably be worth doing when i get tired of GT5.

If your not to fussed about the online portion of the game then its probably worth buying a second hand copy on e-bay when it drops to $10 because thats about all its worth.

I've got to be completely honest with you brainfade, I've read some of your posts and rants on this and just causally thought, "Man, this guy really hates this game", but reading this, it all makes sense.
I really respect your opinion and where you're coming from after sharing this.

I agree with you on a lot of points, I think the GT cars should have a lot more grip, some of the tracks do seem off, the collisions are out of whack (especially getting stuck on walls), and the default settings and car setups all need adjustments out of the box for sure.

And even though I wanted more of a sim from it, I do think the game is still great fun. I'm really having a blast in it after getting all the settings and tunings tweaked to make the cars behave more in lines with how I think they should. The GT cars for example, and now this is with a controller, I crank the downforce and turn down the steering lock, all to try to get that Race Pro type feel (I'm a console guy). I've never driven a GT class car or any race model, but I'd think they'd stick like glue unless on the absoute edge, and so I try to tune them to feel that way.

I think Andy Tudor was right when he said this was between PGR and Forza/GT, but closer than Shift 1. It is a mix of arcade and sim.

But it's still a lot of fun. I don't think we'll see a Shift 3, which is too bad, Andy said that with each iteration they wanted to get more and more toward a hardcore sim.

I have not played shift2 but have played shift and this sounds pretty much the same as the last one by what people are describing. Absolutely could not stand the first one, it reminded me of Rfactors physics which I hate. Does it still do that annoying thing, where you turn the wheel and the car just rolls and then you turn more and it starts turning?

I loved Shift 1 but this feels so different to me and worse.

The levelling up system is bad. I have 51% Career completion and still have most of Retro to do, Drift, Works, GT1, GT3, Modern A Invitational, Most of Endurance etc and I'm already at Level 20 and maxed out.

The money system is also bad. Shift 1 had 10,000, 20,000, 40,000 and 80,000. The most I've earnt so far is 18,000 for an Endurance race and I've started a Works race which is 18,000 as well.

Opponents mostly seem to have a better car than you unless your in something like a Veyron.

With both of you reporting the other, we're not really going to get anywhere unless you both take a step back. You both need to stop this now before we're forced to take action against both of you.

All of you guys need to calm down and stop the personal attacks rights now.

The valid points are getting buried in a sea of insults and they stop right now.

Scaff

Just got fed up playing it.....WHAT THE ********************ING **** THE FORCE FEEDBACK AND ANYTHING RELATED TO THE USE OF A WHEEL ******* ******* SUCKS!!!!!

/rant

I finaly got the game and I have a question if anyone can help me.
Im on the PS3 and in the replays the AIs cars seem like they are lagging or something.
Is it normal or is it just me? its really annoying

I've noticed that a few times as well. During the actual race they are fine but during the replay, they seem jumpy.

I really feel like everyone who bought this game should get a refund for it because its horrible. NO where even close to being real racing. and to say that they can compete with PD and GT any is a laugh plain out.. this game makes me sick. :yuck:
