There's a rumor going around that says "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use.

I really hope that this premium is PS Plus and they aren't going to do what Microsoft is doing.

As someone who is truely against paying to play online,If Sony still allow me to play online for free on the PS4 I would be massivly surprised

@Robin Final video already up mate

Something I read within the past hour. A non-Sony news source so its not 100% confirmed at all.

But its still the 19th here and the 19th in New York and usually they post the vid late at night UK time (like after a go to sleep). I was sure there would be another.

It's slightly confusing with the times zones, oh well sometime tomorrow all will be revealed anyway!

You're joking, right?

Sony are massively proud of PSN, they think its the greatest thing in the history of consoles and its free. I wouldn't see why they wouldn't make a video about it and how it ties their whole gaming ecosystem together.

The reason I thought you were joking was because the final video has already been leaked. You should check the news page.

Nah I wasn't joking, when I just checked the US Playstation site that video still wasn't up but if thats the final one then it makes sense.

.

Guess they had to release it early because of the leak

I think this is in part of cnet's review.

The PlayStation 3 has become a solid all-around multimedia player. I use mine to play content off my NAS. The PS4 could benefit by having an even more robust set of playback compatibility including -- dare I say it -- the MKV file format.

Perhaps it's also time for Sony to abandon PlayStation Plus, the "premium" subscription service that gives access to discounted and occasionally free games as well as automated system updates. (Yes, that's actually a feature.) Sony has always held the notion of free online gaming in high regard, so it's best to stick with that model moving forward. If that's not the path the company wants to go down, make the incentive of being a PlayStation Plus member something we can't live without. You know, the way Xbox Live does it.
For the Link it is right here.

Yeah I see it there. But XBLA also charges what, $15 a month? That's $180 a year and more than 3 times the cost of one year of PS Plus.

Take from this what you will....the latest speculation from Kotaku.

The PS4 Will Be Out This November, And You’ll Be Able To Control It With Your Phone

Kotaku
Our source—the same reliable source who back in early 2012 told us the codename for Sony's next console and the codename for Microsoft's next console—tells us that there are two models planned for the new machine, and that pricing won't be announced until later this year, possibly around E3. The current plan, our source says, is to release them at $429 and $529, but that could change.

Orbis is also following the path first set by Xbox Live: our source says "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use. Sony's new online service will be called PlayStation World, our source says, replacing PlayStation Plus.

XBL is $5 a month $60 a year. I can't wait to see what the announcement is tomorrow but I would laugh if the announcement was for a game but not the console or a little teaser and it tells you to wait until E3 to learn everything else about the PS4.

Why do they need to follow in the path of XBox Live? What was wrong with the path that PS Plus was going?

We don't know what 'most' means yet, Xbox Live requires a gold subscription to even play online... I don't know, but I'm sure Sony wouldn't go that far. I reckon this is for cloud services (cloud saves, game streaming, etc.), possibly social features like screenshots and video (or maybe just a larger limit for saving such files online), automatic downloads and patching, that sort of thing. Personally if I do get a PS4 I will be paying for the online features if they're anything like Plus has been, Plus is great. Price is vital, of course, as are the exclusive games that would entice me to buy a PS4.

They wouldn't have invited investors for something so trivial.

Who is hosting video streaming? Has SpikeTV gotten on board for a broadcast?

If that happens you can thank all the xbox gamers who defiantly defended paying for services. If all gamers pitched the hissy fit they did over "$599 US dollars" with pay to play online it would all eventually become free

It would be funny if only they launch an OnLive style console and talk about PS Vita 4G, that would be an epic fail with everyone wanting to know about PS4 .

I honestly can't see it being anything but the next PS console, or 2.
I am hoping they do show off PS4. Just a little worried about specs for final release. Dev Kit rumoured specs are quite a bit underpowered than I would like at the moment. They should be able to take a relatively big step in time for release and I hope they do make it.

I hope some of the games we might get to see today are new just for next-generation and not just current PC/PS3 game engines just looking good on the new console.

As long as I can play online and download demos for free, I'm good.

Advanced features like streaming and youtube uploading would be nice to have, but they're probably going to be with the paid service, understandably. :(

It should be. All it does is potentially create another toll to gamers. First it was the addition of the online voucher, now on top of that its pay to play possibly.

I won't even be slightly interested if they charge for online play. Online play, updates, and demos should be free, everything else they can charge for.
