Fixed it up a bit :sly:

You'll probably be just fine for small online lobbies; big ones could be, uh, interesting.

I would have liked to have seen the results of fixed-host testing for large lobbies (star/hub rather than mesh, needing less bandwidth, in theory).

Marc should just buy an uninterruptible power supply and a generator for additional insurance :D

Don't Canuckistanis need 'em anyway?

I have a server grade UPS for my ps3. I had a power "spike" last Sunday during a race and the only thing not protected by the ups was my USB hub so my keyboard stopped working but I raced right thru it thanks to the UPS.

I wanted to test fixed host for the bandwidth challenged like lefty but got out voted and I think even if I won there would have been a 3d3 mutiny. :sly:

You have 3-phase at home? Neat! (I should not be surprised ;) )

Nuthin' wrong with testing. It's SCIENCE!

I really have to pull out wireshark at some point. I've been trying to avoid it, since it seems like work *hagshpthui*

No, not really.
Plus, I'm in a Loft Apt. A generator would be.....awkward.

Currently my UPS only covers my main PC, but it might be getting an upgrade to handle a bit more.
Even then, the fixed host is a bit risky. During our fixed host tests the main reason for the room crashing was a server dc from the GT5 servers. I never lost any power, or internet con., but the room crashed anyway. 3 times in about 5 hours of testing over two days 👎

After, or even during Christmas break I'm going to try again and see if it is stable enough for use.
For now the early test results are disappointing, but it could have just been a bad day / week for the GT5 servers.

Might even have solved Lefty's connection issues... but we'll have to wait until the next race to be sure. :nervous:

Very unusually, I can run a longish session (test or otherwise) any time this evening, some time after 6pm AEST (7pm AEDT).

Anyone up for some testing or racing? If there's no Oceania takers, I'll probably be Karting around anyways in the race lobby (though I may turn tire wear off some of the time) - though I'm not yet sure when I'll start, precisely, if I'm all lonely-like.

Is this dead? I read about a lot of Oceanic friends here interested in 3D3/WRS-OL. I had to reject invite coming from WRP because the Euro slot doesn't match my free time. As I'm almost free from work in the morning, I would be very happy to join you in some real racing :)

I think we were kind of adjourned while waiting for Jon to get all moved and internetted again. Did you see the Saturday slot post?

The Chris one? Yes, I did. But it doesn't make difference to me. I've shifts all around the week, saturdays and sundays included. I'm able to find some drive time in the local 7-21 time range, which excludes NA and EU time slots for WRS-OL and...... 99.99% of online championships :(

My only hope is checking series in Australia/NZ, but never found one to enter yet.

I feel your pain, as I am typically racing at 5-6am, but that's partly because I find it difficult to commit to evening times (family bedtimes tend to vary). Decent (not brilliant) public lobbies aren't too hard for me to find, especially around the weekend, but I usually don't have the time (or lack of sleep debt).

I suspect we just need a couple more for critical mass, so to speak.

C.R.A.P. should have some Australian-friendly time slots, among others. I'll have a think about it.

Jon and Peter (sidplayos2) might well be easier to race with in the time slots you mention. I'm sure they'll weigh in at some point  Plus, they'd be more likely to give you a race!

If they don't care to give a look at mirrors from time to time :dopey:
Or better.... at track map (some corners behind)

[thread=229656]Here.[/thread]

I haven't checked them out personally, but I planned to at some point. I haven't gone looking since I signed up for the ORCA Alfa Series, not wanting to overcommit.

It's just a thought. Remember, the brief was odd hours for an EU GMT+1 resident; C.R.A.P. seems to have Australian/Oceania timezone involvement, but no 'aussie only' mentality, as some series here have (mostly to do with avoiding lag). I'm also, y'know, slow (especially with the wheel for a while), so casual/friendly ticks boxes for me.

The ORCA guys also have Spec and Spot racing during the week in theory, but the times for those will probably favour EU/UK normal night times. EDIT: EU/US normal night times. Derp.

My night time availability, if I am at all, tends to be in the GMT 11:30-13:30 area (9:30pm-11:30pm), which ironically is an hour later for other East Coast Australians (NSW/VIC) for Daylight Savings, just to complicate matters.

I like Australian half hour timezones :)
I didn't know I was that CRAP

I think you need to take another look at the previous TT results Paul - you beat me in the BMW :sly:

In all seriousness, don't wait for me guys, although I'm flattered that you consider me worthy. Between work and kids which mean I can't commit to a regular slot, and a poor internet connection which would probably dc me if I did get on, I'll sit it out for now.

If my situation changes then you'll be the first to know. Obviously I'll still have a job and the kids  but we might at least have better internet in the next house (maybe even a wired connection to the PS3)

Had another open day on Sunday and five sets of people around. One couple came back for the third time, so hopefully we'll get an offer soon

Nah, I'm in Queensland (South Australia/Northern Territory are the 1/2 hour ones). We (the state) apparently decided that we already had quite enough daylight, and saving any more would fade our cows. Or something. Which makes late night spots for us Dads a bit annoying to sync up.

And you know I meant myself, Paul :dunce:

I'm pretty sure Peter wanted to race you, Jon :D

I think we'd settled on whatever works to get the bums on racing seats/couches, whenever it happens, and we pretty much just need more drivers. Myself and Peter wouldn't be a race, it would be a very, very short Touge battle, for example.

If interest and drivers in the registry increase over time, it'll happen.

I did theorize that a late-night spot on Saturdays might also work for us, until we build up a bigger core of Oceania drivers (say, 10PM me = 11PM other aussie guys, midday GMT, 8am West-Coast USA, 5am for East-Coast nutters). I'll mention it in the Saturday thread.

Ren, I think it may just be a case of picking a date and holding an event. The longer we talk about it the more peoples schedules change. If a Saturday evening slot works well for you and Peter then that is when it should be, and I will endeavour to be online as often as I can be. In theoty, 11pm is a good slot for me once a week assuming we can be done within an hour or so (as Tim likes to do for the US events I believe).

That slot may also be suitable for EU and US participants, so I'd be surprised if, with enough notice given, it's just the two of you.

It might be worth running a trial event first though to get everyone used to setting their systems up correctly and understanding all the rules and qualifying formats. Whenever I go into a race thread, the OP always seems daunting!

Who is going to host the events on a regular basis?

PS. I hope I can live up to Peter's expectations

Nah. D2 gold qualify -> just Nurburgring addiction and a free hour.
D2 podiums: only did spending a lot of time.
I think you can consider me in the D3 class for racing. By now I've no experience, don't like pressure, and have little consistency :indiff: Indeed I hope to learn lessons quickly. At last, I'm a polite driver with A-spec bobs too.

I have some difficulties guessing your timezone. I hope you make one that suits local needings, there are a lot of series for EU and US timezones. As suggested by Ren, the GMT 11:30-13:30 area (9:30pm-11:30pm for +10 Australia) can be a nice one. Half hour or one hour earlier, even better. Will be able to join 2/3 of the events if set in random days (due to work shifts....).

GMT 10:30-13

+10 Aus 20:30-23

I'm GMT+11 at the moment Paul as we are on daylight saving time. Will revert to GMT +9 at the end of March.

:ouch: You are in early summer, I forgot about it.

I adjusted a bit. Is it correct now? It's even more late!

GMT 10:30-13
+1 IT 11:30-14 (cold winter here....

)
+10 Aus 20:30-23 (+8 time zone +2 summer time)
+12 Aus 22:30-1am (+10 time zone +2 summer time)
+13 NZ 23:30-2am (+11 time zone +2? summer time)

Close...

10:30 GMT is 20:30 Queensland (Ren), 21:30 Melbourne & Sydney (me and Peter), 23:30 New Zealand

I am GMT+11 in your winter and GMT+9 in your summer. The 2 hour change is because our daylight saving goes one way and yours goes the other.

Hope that makes sense :)

You're spot on, Jon.

The time zone combinations make my head hurt...

I'm GMT+10, throughout the year.

Maybe we could persuade Christophe or Lucas? >_> <_<

I forget what the question was, but sure! :dunce:

Waking up on a Sat morning (for me, PST) to do a trial race to get any initial setup/connection items taken care of? Can do. 👍 I guess I've been waiting for a time to be picked, to see if I could join or not...I'll make an effort.

Sounds awesome. Note that I personally (and I wouldn't want to hold anyone up if it was just me with the problem) would need exponentially better bribes to be able to reliably get the TV before 1200-1230GMT (10:00-10:30pm) on a Saturday, and even that is only 75%. Especially as I'm back at it at 5-6am for ORCA in the morning :sly:

I can't help you there, Ren. I just spent two years worth of "Hubby Points" to get a G27!

Nice, Chuk. 👍

I guess since Chuk and I are still the "Western" minority, we're probably still just waiting for a time to be picked by the majority, and we'll make our best effort to be there. We still (probably) won't have a NAT 1 host, but if everyone makes an effort to get their PS3 on DMZ, it should be OK. I have pretty good internet service, and could host (NAT 2, DMZ).

So far, only these members showed an interest for this timeslot races:

sidplayos2
Carlos Fandango
Ealirendur
chukabilly
Duck

+ Gravitron, but only for Saturdays.

Too few for a decent try? Who is in 15/2 for a trial/test/knowledge session?

Keep forgetting about this thread.
I'm always keen for more racing, and now i will check regularly for progress :D

I just realized that 15/2 was.... last week
I'm busy the 20&21 mornings, but I should be free the 23rd.

@iGoFast: are you sure about the timeslot?

Updated showed-some-interest people list:
sidplayos2
Carlos Fandango
Ealirendur
chukabilly
Duck
jtv90069
iGoFast (Vaxen should make the job mid week, but as it's a test....)
(Gravitron)

To be defined:
host (I've a bad, slow NAT2 connection, and haven't set up a DMZ)
car(s)
track
time (in the GMT 8-13 range)

Slowish NAT 2, here (7-800KB/s up and 5MB/s down, but decent latency; not to the EU so much, however.

Week nights my availability varies a fair bit, but I'm often around from 1130-1330 GMT (9:30-11:30pm my time).

Technically I might be able do NAT 1, but I might be dead if I did 💡
