Can someone explain capture cards to me? I've been thinking it might be fun to make YouTube videos of some of my favorite cars, but I have no idea how to do it.
I use a Hauppauge HDPVR2, which is an external USB capture device which has a built in H.264 encoder built in. This reduces the stress on the PC, but you still need to make sure you have a decent CPU and at least 8gb of system memory available. It records at 1080p 30fps, but it will record 60fps if the input is at 720p. You plug the USB into the PC (obviously), and it has a HDMI input to plug the console into, a HDMI out pass through that goes to your tv or monitor, and it also has a component input (converter cable provided); which allows you to capture from older consoles or the PS3. It also requires an external power source.
Then you have the original Elgato, which is pretty much the same as above, except it only records in 30fps. The software is much better for the elgato, and again it has a HDMI in, HDMI out for pass through, and a component connector (converter cable provided). This one is powered off the USB cable.
Next up is the Elgato HD60. This one will record at 60fps at 1080P, which is a big advantage for games that run at 60fps. It allows for a smoother looking video. It uses the same software as the older Elgato. This one, as far as I know, does not offer any input for component. Powered from the USB cable.
Then you have the Elgato HD60 plus, which is an internal capture device. This one is instulled into a shot PCI-E slot inside your PC. You will need a desktop for this device, but it does come with a "slimline" bracket for small form factor PC's. This does the same thing as the external HD60, and only has HDMI in and HDMI out pass through. powered by your computers motherboard.
Personally if you are going to buy one, then I would seriously look to the HD60. If you use a laptop, definitely go for the external. Even if you use a desktop mostly for recording, the external one is useful, as it is fully portable.
There are some made by avermedia also, but I do not know much about those ones.
