Sutil is "not surprised" that Williams took Senna, and has "two options" for 2012:

As a rule of thumb, when someone says an announcement will be made tomorrow, I'll usually add a few weeks to that.
This was reported a while ago, probably around the 8th, 9th or 10th of this month. A Russian journalist said that an annoucement would be made on the 20th, and a few in Germany seemed to agree with him. The Finns believe Petrov might be the team's third driver if he can't un-seat Trulli.

I seem to recall reading an article a long while back about Sutil saying he would like to try NASCAR if he couldn't get a seat for 2012. Maybe he'll take that route.

How's he going to do that though? If he losses the case he will be going to prison for some time.

I don't understand how Williams can hire Senna when Petrov has more money. They have done it for the money so why not get more money?

He may be given a suspended sentence, which means he will avoid prison time unless he commits another felony within a set period of time. Like when Renault was given a two-year suspended sentence for their role in the Singapore affair: they were free to compete, but if they brought the sport into disrepute, they would be banned from competing in Formula 1 ever again. That sentence only expired on September 21st last year.

For assault? Pull the other one. You go down for that one. Especially if you are famous. The authorities are fond of making examples of them to act as a warning to others.

I don't understand why Sutil did something stupid in the first place, he's an F1 driver!!! To the lot of us he has the good life.

And I could understand that if Sutil was actually Lindsay Lohan in a very clever disguise.

I think a lot of the sentencing will depend on the circumstances surrounding the actual incident. If it wasn't pre-meditated, then I don't think Sutil has much to worry about.

Senna is reported to bring fourteen million Euros to Williams. Petrov is believed to have fifteen million.

Of course, Tired Tyres is assuming that Petrov was speaking to Williams at all, and Petrov has denied being in talks with them.

Teams can approach drivers you know. They can keep very quiet about it as well. Drivers are not obliged to say who they are talking to either.

I'm simply wondering that since Williams are employing two pay drivers, why don't they choose the two with the most money?

Still, Senna may even show he's got what it takes as well.

Because Petrov knew that there were at least four drivers - Barrichello, Sutil, Senna and Bottas - vying for the second Williams seat. He could have reasonably approched them or been approached himself, but he knew there was a lot of competition to get that drive and probably figured that his best chances lay elsewhere. Especially since he has fifteen million Euros at his disposal, which means occupied seats - like Jarno Trulli's - may be available to him when they are closed to others.

BBC Sport - Caterham to relocate

We don't have a general F1 news thread so I thought I'd put this here. They're moving to the old Arrows/TWR factory in Oxfordshire.

And there's also a passing reference to Trulli under pressure, with Petrov 'tipped' to get the seat. We all know he's the favourite for it, it's just a case of if Caterham actually move Trulli on.

It wouldn't hurt to make a new thread for that. A team using a facility that belonged to another ten years ago verges on comical.

First we have four-year-old Arrows cars racing in F1 back in '06, and now this...

Small difference. If it was bigger, money could have decided it. But one million Euros would probably make Williams choose based on other criteria (the normal ones): past experience, simulator tests, physical tests, personality, marketing...

It's also possible that Petrov's sponsors didn't want to pay the same amount for the Williams seat.

please please, drop the Senna-Petrov comparisons, let's focus on Petrov and Sutil now, they're the ones still looking for a seat (along with rookies).

Hmmm ... Petrov-Sutil. Who do you think deserves a better chance? :sly:

Found this article on the bbc website which has some interesting comments on Bruno:

They know a decent driver when they see one at Renault, who have been renamed Lotus for 2012. Trackside operations director Alan Permane has worked with Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica and he says his impressions of Senna were largely positive.

"I don't think there's any doubt about his pace," Permane says. "What lets him down - and he knows it - is his consistency. But he didn't get a chance to show it. He had eight races with us but a lot of them were compromised by car problems."

Permane admits that it is difficult to be sure exactly how quick Senna is because Petrov is not exactly a proven top-level benchmark.

"Bruno was at least as quick as - if not quicker than - Vitaly," Permane says. "It's difficult to say whether he's going to be an Alonso/Kubica/Schumacher character, but some drivers take a long time to come along.

"Look at Jenson Button - when he drove for us, Giancarlo Fisichella destroyed him, and Fisi would be the first guy to admit he's not a mega. He was a very good number two. But now Jenson's fantastic. Can Senna do that? Only time will tell.

But you're still assuming the Petrov spoke to Williams or that Williams approached him. When Petrov was asked if he was talking to Williams, he said "thankfully, no" because there were so many other drivers competing for the seat. Evidently, any contact between the two was brief.

That's not such a bad thing. I would, if I were a small team with not much in the way of resources and designers, like the situation Super Aguri was in, use an old chassis as a base, because it would give me a hell lot more than a blank page to work with.

Yeah. Regular Aguri got just 8 points in is career and 50% of those were for an admittedly decent 3rd place for Larrousse at Japan 1990.
