I was going to say it is the sort of show that results when the whole team is on crack.

And no, that isn't a bad thing in this case.

EDIT: Or maybe its the result of a good trip...

EDIT 2: Perhaps the antithesis of boring and normal....

I would describe FLCL by reading them the blurb from the DVD release:

"Naota wants to be normal. But his brother's girlfriend is acting strange and now there's an even stranger girl hitting on him. Literally. With a bass guitar. Oh, did we mention the robots that keep springing from his head? Things get weird, very quickly."

Alternatively I'd describe it as being like a cross between Looney Tunes, South Park, Futurama, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and South Park.

I wouldn't say best ever, not by any means.

I did like Sephy's post though, I think "insane and wonderful" is a perfect way to describe FLCL.

For me Madoka Magica wins the "best ever" award, at least out of the limited selection of anime I have seen; as my only criticisms of it are minor nitpicks about the pacing of Kyoko's arc being a bit too fast; and the fact that the first episode is only really entertaining to rewatch, though it has the valid excuse of setting everything up so that the rest of the story actually makes sense.

Neon Genesis Evangelion wins the award for being my favourite anime, but certainly not the best, because it's a huge mess. But boy is it a glorious mess.

Serial Experiments Lain wins my award for best sound in an anime or... Well... Anything that isn't the Blues Brothers, to be honest, on the grounds of it having a great soundtrack and incredible sound design, both things which I greatly appreciate.

Azumanga Daioh easily takes my best characters award because, while it may not have any Homuras or Kaminas amongst its cast, it makes up for this by having a cast that pretty much entirely consists of great characters.

Although neither of them can compare to the voice acting masterpiece that is Angry Beavers, FLCL wins my award for best straight English dub of an anime, while Axis Powers Hetalia wins my award for best gag dub. Meanwhile, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya wins my award for best Japanese voice over track; and also wins an award for having a title character who is pretty much indistinguishable from me aged 15, bar her being rather more perverted than I was.

Death Note wins the award for most epic Potato Chip eating.

You don't count when talking (somewhat) negatively about EVA, Walter. It's like asking @Sephy his opinion about Asuka.

I'll have to disagree.

I recognize that Eva's far from perfect. But we're just talking about density, and while Rebellion's story might be dense and perhaps even denser than EoE's, the entire Eva series is extremely dense in more ways than just story... character development, endless religious symbolism (regardless of whether it actually means anything), overwhelming amounts of references to random and often obscure sci-fi films, books and anime.

So in terms of overall density, Eva wins hands-down.

So guys, if you had to describe FLCL to someone outside of the community, how would you do it?

I've been thinking about this for the better part of a day, and I'm really struggling to think of a single sentence that even comes close to describing it.

"A coming-of-age story, with lashings of Fear and Loathing"?

The Japanese always get the cool kids
@DK ... picture not showing. :(

Not sure I like the idea of Asuka filled with maggots but whatever floats your boat I guess. :yuck:
I always thought Asuka had a bad attitude, was always kinda mean. :indiff:
I think EoE explains it well enough. ( Well the Director commentary did also)
She didn't get enough attention from her parents. Then she saw her own mother kill herself.
