First, as far as The Proud Boys go, I don't think they are racist. But, I don't like them confronting antifa and fighting. It's certainly not helpful to the cause.
See
@huskeR32 's post for further.
Also, even if the Proud Boys aren't necessarily "as racist" (my airquotes) as other groups, it's hard to deny that racist/misogynistic ideology forms at least some part of their ideals.
The Proud Boys aren't the ones meanicing the streets.

FBI classifies Proud Boys as an Extremist Organization, cites ties with White-Nationalist ideals (Washington Post, 2018)
~93% of BLM protests are peaceful, despite Trump narrative (Guardian, 2020)
Data from aformentioned article (ACLED)
Here are some of the (imo) more noteworthy bits of the ACLED article:
In more than 93% of all demonstrations connected to the movement, demonstrators have not engaged in violence or destructive activity. Peaceful protests are reported in over 2,400 distinct locations around the country. Violent demonstrations,4 meanwhile, have been limited to fewer than 220 locations — under 10% of the areas that experienced peaceful protests.
Research from the University of Washington indicates that this disparity stems from political orientation and biased media framing (
Washington Post, 24 August 2020), such as disproportionate coverage of violent demonstrations (
Business Insider, 11 June 2020; Poynter, 25 June 2020). Groups like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have documented organized disinformation campaigns aimed at spreading a “deliberate mischaracterization of groups or movements [involved in the protests], such as portraying activists who support Black Lives Matter as violent extremists or claiming that antifa is a terrorist organization coordinated or manipulated by nebulous external forces” (
ADL, 2020).
Despite the fact that demonstrations associated with the BLM movement have been overwhelmingly peaceful, more than 9% — or nearly one in 10 — have been met with government intervention, compared to 3% of all other demonstrations. This also marks a general increase in intervention rates relative to this time last year. In July 2019, authorities intervened in under 2% of all demonstrations — fewer than 30 events — relative to July 2020, when they intervened in 9% of all demonstrations — or over 170 events.
Although federal authorities were purportedly deployed to keep the peace, the move appears to have re-escalated tensions. Prior to the deployment, over 83% of demonstrations in Oregon were non-violent. Post-deployment, the percentage of violent demonstrations has risen from under 17% to over 42% (see graph below), suggesting that the federal response has only aggravated unrest. In Portland, violent demonstrations rose from 53% to nearly 62% of all events after federal agents arrived on the scene.
Non-state groups are becoming more active and assertive. Since May, ACLED records over 100 events in which non-state actors engaged in demonstrations (including counter-demonstrations) — the vast majority of which were in response to demonstrations associated with the BLM movement. These non-state actors include groups and militias from both the left and right side of the political spectrum, such as Antifa, the Not :censored:ing Around Coalition, the New Mexico Civil Guard, the Patriot Front, the Proud Boys, the Boogaloo Bois, and the Ku Klux Klan, among others (see map below)
Of course, I'm not denying that riots and violent protests are happening, and appropriate measures need to be taken against the riots. That said, BLM (both the movement and the organization*) isn't going out of its way to set all of America on fire, contrary to what Big Daddy Trump and his administration want you to believe.
At least Trump acknowledged his thugs, and told them to stand down.
Telling a group of Neo-fasicists who are known for advocating and taking part in political violence to "stand by" (which is the other part of the quote that you've conveniently left out) is not at all the same thing as just saying "stand down." In fact, it's the complete opposite.
Biden wouldn't even admit antifa exists.
Joe Biden says Antifia exists as an idea, not as an organization. While I wasn't at all fond of Joe Biden's answer, he also isn't completely wrong either, and a few statements from the FBI kinda back him up. Antifa is a bunch of groups/cells that all claim to be under the same banner, but have different objectives and methods within each group. They are a very decentralized group with no actual leadership, which ideally would make it harder for them to gain traction. The FBI did say that some individuals were dangerous and they could be a potential threat.
Thing is, though, is that the minute you treat Antifa as an organization (which is what Trump did by marking them as a terrorist organization), you give them power, legitimacy, and a reason to actually organize their forces. That is the complete opposite of what one wants, and every time Trump brings them up (which he does all the goddamn time), he continues to keep them relevant.
Granted, since Trump continues to give those numbnuts attention, I would've very much liked to see Biden fully condemn them as well.
You know, it used to mean something when you called someone a racist.
Making fun of a white woman, who, for years, pretended to be a native American, for personal gain, is not racist.
It is still, at absolute minimum, a very offensive slur with racist connotations and is 100% uncalled for and unprofessional, no matter the context. The President of the United States should not be speaking in such a manner when talking to his fellow politicians, no matter what side of the aisle they're on.
Can someone kindly give me a brief but accurate summary of the debate?
Unfortunately with my new job and early start times I am unable to stay up and watch evening broadcasts in the US.
Imagine monkeys flinging poo mixed with the Spiderman-pointing-at-Spiderman meme. That's pretty much it.
*Full Disclaimer: BLM The Organization does kinda suck, and they do hurt BLM The Movement quite a bit imo.
