I finally won Maggiore with the BMW Z4, in my second full race attempt (previous best 4th in DBR9). If I can win this, anyone can.
Two stops, medium tires, pretty standard. I ran average 1:58s, with a few 1:57s, and a few 1:59s.
A lot of guides say "if you aren't in front by lap 4, restart," or "if you aren't leading by the first pit stop, you've lost." Not so! (or maybe I was just lucky)
I made a decent start and got near the front, but couldn't get past Yamanaka, and he pulled out an 8 second lead by lap 10 when we pitted. I filled up to 10 laps of fuel. Exiting the pit amongst the cars on the 1-stop strategy was a big help, because the fast guys got stuck in traffic, and I didn't have as much trouble. You've gotta send it to get around slower cars without letting them slow you down, especially in the high-speed middle sector. I didn't do a ton of curb-cutting in my race, but it's helpful to have a sense of where you can place the car [and not get penalized] when you catch a much slower car on RH tires at an inopportune time, such as in the middle of a sweeper. I was able to catch the leaders because they didn't have clear track in front of them, and took a lot longer to make their passes.
I made my second stop on Lap 20 from the lead, but Rubilar got ahead of me in the pits. Again, he wasn't as fast as he could be because he took longer to pass the cars that were on the 1-stop strategy. We both worked our way to the front, and by lap 23 or so, I was 6th, and Rubilar was 4th. I caught up while he battled with the top 3, and I got past all of them before the hairpin around Lap 27. I held Rubilar off for 3 and a half laps, during which he was anywhere between 0.5 and 2.5 seconds behind me. I lapped a Corvette on lap 28 or 29 in the crucial middle sector, which bought me some time and took some pressure off.
I won ahead of Rubilar in 30 laps, by 0.891 seconds.
Since this race is so much about consisitancy and being precisely on the racing line in high speed corners, I switched to Automatic transmission, so there was one less thing I could flub, and I could really focus on the line. Generally, I was slow in the first sector, but I was quick in the middle part with the sweepers and the big straightaway, so I could pretty much always pull out 0.5 seconds on anyone through that section, which gave me confidence for both attacking and defending, and a bit of padding for the rest of the lap.
I'm not sure if the Z4 was the magic bullet, or if I had just accrued enough mileage through attempts that my lap times improved enough for me to win. Before the Z4, I tried:
Porsche 911 RSR (a bit unstable under braking)
Peugeot (slow on straights)
Genesis Coupe (quick but I didn't like the tire wear)
Mazda RX-Vision GT3 (twitchy on worn tires)
Aston DBR9 (very stable but felt a bit heavy)
I didn't expect to win on my first attempt in the Z4! I had even bought a WRX Gr3 at the same time I bought the Z4, just for this race. The Z4 was quick and predictable, and didn't lose too much speed on worn tires. If I hadn't won on this attempt, I was planning to try a 1-stop strategy on RH tires. Hope this helps someone to not get too discouraged if you can't pass everyone in the first stint.
