Voted yes as neither the industry nor Mazda thought it would be that welcome to customers.
Plus its concept is great and far too rare these days.

But (not going to make friends now) it is and will be a hairdresser car (non modded).
Though I really dig the new itineration they planning for next year (?)...

Not making any friends because that's a played out argument and we know you can do better.

I will say non-modded, the Miata leaves a lot to be desired for a man in his 20s. Once it's dropped a few inches on some fatlip wheels with a hardtop, whole different ballgame. Downright classy in fact. I bet most people on the road assume my car is way more expensive than it really is.

With this car you need to think ahead at what it can do and can look like, rather than what it is in stock form.

^^ your car was one of those i had in mind.
Nobody would call it a hairdresser car.
I like the MX5, but not in the stock condition. That may change with the new one (it resembles in the proto shots a lot the new z4)

I've got to wonder where this "hairdresser" thing came from.

The last person to cut my hair in exchange for money drove a brand new Mercedes-Benz S600. The person who cuts my wife's hair drives a Porsche 996 911 Carrera 4 (and her husband has an E39 Alpina B10).

Of all the people I've ever known to drive MX-5s (which numbers in the hundreds), none have been involved in the hairdressing industry, one-in-four have been in the motor industry, one-in-four have been women and only one is gay (unless you count his boyfriend, then it's two)...

Ehhh, around California they're really popular with "chicks". Miatas driving around here are either lightly modified to be racers with roll bars, engine mods, etc. or "top down to the mall" cars. I've seen a pink and white one in Los Angeles...

For me at least, there's no denying that it can be a chick car.

California is ridiculous:

Anything can be a chick car. If all it takes is someone to paint one pink...

Aside from the white Miata used to drive my wife to our wedding - driven by GTPlanet SuperModerator Smallhorses' wife - I didn't see a female-driven Miata in California.

However, the question was why it has attracted this "hairdresser's car" tag. Does anyone actually know a hairdresser who drives an MX-5?

I consider myself a big MX5 fan, but somehow with every post fitftw makes it makes me want another MX5 slightly less. Mega fanboyism can really put you off something.

Wonder which of those categories I fall under?

I'll ask my boyfriend...

(For anyone who doesn't know me, this is a joke)...

I shudder to think how much you must pay for a hair cut!!

My previous hairdresser had a Volvo V50, just FYI. My current one is a German Archeology student, so I imagine she'd have something sensible-trousers too.

Most of the time when I see convertibles they're driven by younger girls or middle aged women. Usually Mustangs, Sebrings, stuff that is usually considered more of a chick car to begin with. I see Miatas driven by a pretty even mixture of older men, older women, and younger guys. Not so much young girls, that I've found. I still hear the "gay" stereotype of them plenty, though.

Dunno abbout the hairdesser thing... The NC, from what I've seen, is mostly driven by middle-aged guys (probably because of the midlife crysis or whatever). The NB and NA, though, are usually driven by folks in their twenties - mostly guys, I might add. And, whhile I can't vouch for that, I doubt most of them are haidressers and/or gay. There's just too many of them

But yeah, I can see where this 'girl's car' thing comes from. Stock Miatas, especially the NC, don't look very muscular and manly. Then again, true men don't need their car to reasure themselves of their heterosexuality, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

All the NA Miata's over here are race cars. Its pretty cool going to Cars n' Coffee and seeing a mountain of MX-5's. I've seen even a couple of them kick the living s**t out of Z06's.

That must have been a 20 turn 1/2 mile track.

👎

a boosted Miata can hang with Corvettes on a normal road course. It will get left behind on the straights, but the chances of overtaking in the corners are high 👍

well then he shouldn't have said a Corvette would destroy a Miata. That's an unfair accusation. A brand new Miata costs half of a Corvette. So if you follow my logic, put that $25,000 that you saved buying a Miata over a Corvette, and boost/mod the piss out of the Miata for $25,000 worth.

Do you see where I'm going here? A $50,000 Miata would annihilate a $50,000 Corvette. If you want to test it, add me and buy a stock Z06 and I'll buy a stock NC and mod it to reach the same price you spent on your Vette and we'll go race.

And starting from nothing and using $50,000 from chassis to sheet metal would beat that. Trying to stack up modified cars against stock cars is ridiculous. What about weight saving? Throwing out seats is free. It's just not an argument worth having.

I just don't see where people get off saying "Miata? LOLWUT a Corvette would KILL IT!"

Well no ****, Sherlock. A Corvette costs twice as much. Nobody seems to factor in COST when talking about car vs car...
