PS3: $600, 425 pounds.
Xbone: $500, 429 pounds.

Hm...

Notable because (again) the PS3 launch in Europe was very much a non-event even though the price between the two regions was closer.

I wonder how many of you that are worried about the spying issue have a smart phone, use facebook, google, or have verizon, AT&T etc, even a computer? You should all realize that datamining/ or collecting metadata happens so frequently now that just about everyone is doing it. Would you quit using your computer today if you knew it was spying on you? Would you throw away your phone?

I still have no idea what this argument is supposed to mean; and it's not the first time I've seen someone say it.

So because Google saves your search history, you shouldn't be weary with Microsoft including the mandatory camera that they patented a method of using to determine whether you are responding in a proper way to on screen advertisements (and rewarding you for it in response)? Because your laptop has a webcam, you shouldn't worry that Microsoft has a patent in place to monitor the amount of people that are in the room when you are using your system and restrict access to content if the number is too high?
Even if they were equivalent (which I've seen nothing to suggest they are), why should being okay with one thing on a device that you may very well have to use mean you should be okay with the same thing on a device purely for recreational purposes?

Thats about the worst argument you could make to defend the kinect issue. For one Im not required to hook any of the devices you refer to up to the internet every 24 hours. Second there is no camera or mic that has to be hooked up to make them function. Third This isnt data minning, that invoves data, this is recording images, sound andvital signs in my home. Last I checked my phone or pc are unable to do any of that.

Along with the two posts above me, at least on these other devices (laptop, PC, smartphone), there is a plethora of software that can retain your anonymity and personal data.

Of course I'm worried. That's why when not in use, my iPhone is always hidden and covered in a place where it can't physically see me. If I were to buy an Xbox One, it seems I wouldn't have that luxury, and personally, I find that disturbing.

Was I making an argument? Was I defending kinect? I don't think so.

I suggest you read my comment again with that in mind. I was merely making a point that if you use any of these devices then the Xbox One should be the least of your worries.

Maybe no one has opened a news site in the last week or seen any of the articles regarding a massive NSA compound in Utah constructed for the sole purpose of datamining, one that Google, At&t, Verizon, Apple, and yes even microsoft report their data too. This is all over the news, and hard to miss. The Xbone seems like small fries in comparison. Besides, didn't Microsoft already debunk the spying issue last week, or did I read that statement wrong when they said they would not be spying on you with Kinect?

And, according to MS, there are controls you can put in place to limit the amount of data sent back to the servers. You can even switch the Kinect off, or heaven forbid (!), turn the camera to face the wall.

Just had a thought for a 3rd party device.
A box with soundproofing that covers Kinect.

See no evil, hear no evil! :nervous:

Can you imagine the data a company like Tesco could gather about people with something so simple as "Club Points"

Your only real defense against the scare is to not have internet access at all.
No. I'm not trying to sound snotty. As ridiculous as it sounds. Thats your only real escape. No web access at all. Phones, computer, gaming console (MS or Sony) it doesn't matter. in the end it all circles back.

I well aware people are afraid of privacy issues.

Quick story:

My mom is deathly afraid of using the internet to buy things and by my recommendation used a popular site (One I've used often and never had a problem with) purchased something with her CCard. I don't know if all of he planets were aligned that night or what, but her card number along with was stolen in midst of that transaction. No it was not PSN. The company did catch it and cancelled her transaction along with send her a letter informing her of the incident and actions taken.

Now, with that in mind it can happen to anyone and does. Internet security and privacy is NOT 100%. The government, businesses, your family and friends are all links to you.

If you're going to be weary of what electronics collect from you then be weary of all of them. But lambasting the Xbox One and Microsoft for potentially spying on you while freely using a mobile phone, Facebook, or the Internet in general makes no sense. If you want to fully protect your privacy then doing pretty much anything online isn't exactly smart since just about everything tracks you.

So be worried if you're worried, but don't be selectively worried to fight some stupid console war battle. The best thing you can do if you don't agree with Microsoft's policy is not buy the new Xbox.

Yep, I would just love having to get up every night and placing a towel over the kinect or having to turn it around after every play session, as the console won't operate without it. What a great solution :grumpy:

I'm sure from the get go, there will be people who will try what they can to access other people's Kinect devices and have a snoop.

But if you want to promote invasion of privacy while killing off used games, borrowing and rentals, and have a dud piece of plastic sitting there when your internet connection goes down, while having to pay a yearly subscription just to play it online, be my guest. I for one won't support the death of the gaming industry.

Where has it said that? It has to be connected to the console, but it doesn't have to be switched on or in use for the console to operate.

These kinds of videos just make me cringe. Not even a single amount of funny.

The fact that they actually showed some nice games and are still getting a negative image from stupid videos like that says something.

This.

I don't know how or why console wars have gotten the the point of just being flat out ridiculous. I'm going to blame the lack of MTV though or maybe Obama.

Xbox's UK marketing director Harvey Eagle has said that the console will not function without Kinect connected.

"Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases, yes,"

I haven't seen any newer news stories that debunk this. You can hibernate the kinect, but it must be on to use the system or play games, unless someone can prove me wrong.

I am weary of all of them. That's one of the main reasons I'm not on Facebook, for example.

I'm somewhat more weary of the one that has the mandatory camera and the multiple ideas put forward for potential uses with it over one that does not; and no amount of "as if you have any privacy these days anyway" responses is going to change that when it comes to the idea of adding another such instance with something as unnecessary as a game console of all things.

Norwegian prices "announced" so far: 5000 NOK = ~ 870 USD, ~656 Euros or ~557 GBP. :dunce:

I'll be getting that, when at half price... Hah!
