Just came back from "Michael Clayton".

I liked it a lot, and you'll likely enjoy it if you have any inclination towards legal thrillers or Grisham in general. Clooney's performance is weary and convincing, and the dialogue is sharp. It's a bit long (around 2 hours), but it doesn't feel overly so.

been with my friends yesterday to cinema and we watched " THE KINGDOM". Movie was real good, gonna get it on DVD as soon as it comes out. I recommend this movie!!

28 Weeks Later

I really enjoyed it, definitely check it out if you liked 28 Days Later. That bit with the helicopter in the field was ridiculous, I literally screamed out "HOLY ****!" Also, Doyle is a BAMF.

👍 👍

Casino Royale - I'm not a fan of Bond movies, only watched a few of them but this one kept me interested the whole time. This new Bond seemed a bit dumber and cocky though.

The Machinist - I was reading an article about actors really transforming their body in some films (eg. Stallone in Cop Land, Renée Zellweger in the second Bridget Johnes) and this one caught my attention. Christian Bale lost about 60 pounds to shoot this movie and six months later he was 100 pounds heavier playing Batman in Batman Begins.]

Anyway, I liked The Machinist a lot. Pretty interesting story and the acting from the main characters was very good too. Just the Ivan dude was a bit too exaggerated.

My wife and I rented a couple of classics this week. I love classics.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - (8/10)
I had seen this before but my wife hadn't and her brother is going to be in a stage production of this, so we rented it.

To me this is a defining moment for Jack Nicholson. If you put this next to The Shining then it is very easy to see why he is such a good actor. He is versatile. I would probably give this a 9 or 10, but it gets slow in some parts. It is a tragic comedy, but sometimes it forgets to be funny, only to lead into his next big prank. Watching it years later you have to pay attention to realize who all is in this movie. For example, a young Christopher Lloyd is nearly unrecognizable without hair. I love this movie because it tugs at your emotions, and makes you actually care for this criminal trying to use an insanity case to not spend his time in prison. This wouldn't even pass today as his original crime was statutory rape and he jokes it off in a way that would offend anyone today. Of course, it is a tragedy and by the end of the movie you find yourself agreeing with him only to have his ending tear at you and make you angry. Anyone that hasn't seen this should. At a minimum it shines a spotlight on the archaic psychiatric practices of the 60's. I know my wife was extremely upset at the idea of the shock treatments as a form of behavioral control. You might as well use torture.

Some Like It Hot - (8/10)
First time I had ever seen this one. My wife doesn't get into classic comedies, but she would rather watch American Pie. She doesn't realize that this was American Pie for those days. It is obviously an excuse to show off Marilyn Monroe. While watching this it quickly occurs to me that what we think of as beautiful women today are not. Watching Monroe on screen I realized I would take her over any of the tarts on screen today.

And then I always did love the more innocent nature of comedy from these classics. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis make a great combo as a pair of musicians hiding from prohibition era gangsters by posing as women in an all-girl band. Jack Lemmon truly sells his character.

This is a quick reminder of how comedy used to be able to be made without foul language and stupid sight gags, and was better for it.

This weekend I went and saw a couple of movies in the theater and a couple on DVD.

Theater:

Gone baby gone: I thought good. Not really good, but definitely worth a watch. Boston people are funny.

Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney 3D: Terrible. I hate this movie. The 3D gave me a headache. Just terrible.

DVD:

Adaptation: Love this movie. Probably the 5th or so time Ive watched it. Nicholas Cage would be seen as a great actor if he would just turn down a script or two.

Lost in Translation: Second time I've seen this. The only reason I watched it is because my GF hasnt seen it. I dont like this movie. It's empty. Almost like eating a bag of chips. Yea it was alright, will hold me till the next one, but what substance did I really get out of it?

Transformers (again, at home) - 8/10 - I still hear alot of people that were underwhelmed by the movie but after the second time seeing it was still as good as the first. Of course it's got it's flaws but it's an enjoyable movie to watch.

This is one of my favorite movies ever, but it's not a movie that spoon-feeds it to you.

Watched Transformers at my friends house on Saturday...IMO it was the best i've seen all year. The special effects are top notch!

I think in a round about way you're trying to say I didn't "get it".

Well, I "got it". I just didn't like what I "got" when I did "get it".

The problem was when I first saw that movie, I liked it. But I don't know why I liked it, so in turn, I choose not to like it.

Transformers was also terrible.

I also liked it, but didn't quite know why either.

I think it's safe to say, we didn't get it. :sly:

I didn't mean that per se; I mean that it's not it isn't a movie with a cut and dry message to "get". What I got out of it was more the feeling of these characters and the atmosphere of where they are - finding some kind of commonality in a completely alien world.

I understand how people wouldn't like it, it just kind of stuck with me for whatever reason. And by the way, why do you have to know exactly why you like something? Some things you just enjoy for no particular reason.

Planet Terror

I'm not always the biggest fan of Rodriguez's work, but compared to Sin City, something just didn't feel right... Furthermore, after pairing it up with Death Proof, part two of the Grindhouse duel. This being said, I did enjoy myself, just not as I had expected. I'm normally a sucker for Zombie flicks, and while this definitely was one, it wasn't quite the same thing. At times it tried too hard to be funny, other times it didn't try hard enough to be scary... But the "gore" was good in a ha-ha way from time to time.

Its worth watching, but not nearly as good as I had expected, melty Zombies or not...

7.0 out of 10.0

I didn't know you were zombie fan! 👍 I also enjoyed Planet Terror, but like you, I didn't think it was a classic or anything like that. I don't think it was intended to be. It was like Tarantino and Rodriguez's version of grind house flicks, not much more.

It paled in comparison to films like the Sin City, or how about the original From Dusk Till Dawn? Now, there's a true classic. 👍

I don't know why I love Zombie movies, but they're just awesome. Scary, but not too scary, often times funny, I just love 'em. Speaking of From Dusk Till Dawn, what a great movie that was. I watched it again for the first time in years about a month ago, and I forgot how funny it was.

...And then I got to thinking about it; Not only is Tarantino a good director, but hes also a stellar actor...

It's funny (actually it's sad) how often movie titles over here are changed to something that has nothing to do with the original title. I had no idea what movie "From Dusk Till Dawn" was until you mentioned Tarantino.

It's called "Um Drink No Inferno" (A Drink In Hell) in Brazil.

I watched Rendition today, fairly decent, very well acted. It was a bit slow in places, but I enjoyed it. It's biggest downside is that when it came to the guy they were torturing, it was black and white, I was never left thinking, maybe he was involved. They should have put a big grey area there and kept him in that.

Funny. That's how I think of Zombie flicks, too. Scary, but not exactly terrifying. I think one of the things that I love about these movies is the total chaos. Dawn of the Dead remake did that little too well!

Agreed. He was so money in Pulp Fiction......

They do that for some films in Japan, too. Usually when it's too hard to say, or understand the meaning of the title, I think.

I might actually like the "A Drink In Hell" better. That's pretty cool.

Personally speaking, I liked the 28 movies a lot better than the Romero-style flicks. There is a bit more realism to it I suppose, which honestly makes it that much scarier. But truthfully, the Romero movies are fun just because they are so overwhelming at times... Dawn of the Dead (remake) being an excellent example.

I was watching TRS on Wednesday and they were talking about Dead Alive, one of Pete Jackson's first movies. I saw that a few years back and I kept remembering how awesomely disgusting it was. It wasn't scary, but it was gross, but it was a funny gross.

Sucker Free City
In San Francisco, a Caucasian family pressed by the real estate speculation, moves to Hunter's Point, an Afro-American neighborhood ruled by the V-Dub gang and the son Nick Wade faces problem with the violent gangsters. However, the drug dealer K-Luv decides to bootleg CDs and get close to Nick, protecting him. Meanwhile, the Chinese collector Lincoln Ma is blackmailed by the owner of a restaurant and he executes him, falling in disgrace with his mobster boss. The lives of Nick, K-Luv and Lincoln are entwined when the drug lord Sleepy protects a rapper against the Chinese piracy of his CD. 10/10 👍 👍
