I dumped my sister's motorcycle today. My dad and my sister tried to teach me for the first time how to ride on her Yamaha Exciter 250.

Shifting into first for the first time, I tried to ease off the clutch and ease onto the gas as smoothly as I could. I got it in fine but I was on the gas a bit too much. Being a new rider I was taken aback at the sudden jump, and in my corrections to the steering I started to get scared because I'm in a narrow curving alley. I reached for the brake but in my nervousness I somehow managed to increase the gas as my hand slipped by, and hold it there...although I was gripping onto the front brake, I was still giving it gas (didn't realize it until too late). Well, I dumped it and grafted my leg some and it left a rather long scratch. The bike only sustained a scuffed saddlebag, a broken rubber footpeg (it tore off, footpeg is fine) and a slightly bent front handlebar, nothing that makes it unrideable. I'll be fine, too. But man I thought I had gone and done it, I thought for sure I wrecked the bike! Thank the Lord that both of us are fine! My sister wasn't mad at me, she even offered to give me another try. I politely declined :P I was wearing a helmet, but not long jeans, only short jeans. :ouch:

Man you must have been scared. I remember a few years back my ex and I went off and bought motorbikes. Mine was a really nice Suzuki Intruder, but it had been YEARS since I've been on one and when I gunned it I was shocked by the sudden lurch ... just like you.

I careened down the street wobbling all over the place and I was CONVINCED that I was going to wreck the damned thing half an hr after getting it. Lord was I scared.

Unlike you, though, I managed to hold the thing upright and hit the brake without incident!

In other news, I spoke to Teledriel yesterday on the phone ... all the way over in Japan. It was really neat to put a voice to a name.

Try this for a slightly scary bike story!

Was riding my Kawasaki ZZR600 almost exactly two years ago, stopped to visit a mate for a cuppa and it rained whilst i was there. When it stopped, i set off home, i was riding over a railway bridge at 30-35 mph. As i reached the crown of the bridge i saw a ford transit van pulling out of a side entrance only 30ft infront of me!

Steered into the middle of the road (bare in mind we drive on the left here, and the entrance was on the right) to go round the back of him, only for him to see me and brake!

All would have been ok, except for the patch of diesel that the front wheel hit as i braked in reaction to him stopping (I couldn't steer round him coz he had stopped and traffic was coming the other way),also i was committed to my line by then!

Lost the front!
and because i had reached the crown of the bridge, I slid down the road for about 40 metres( it is quite a steep bridge, and the road was still wet), closely followed by my bike(it actually caught me up 3 times before it destoyed itself by hitting the curb and a bollard) And all the time i was thinking i was gonna die, coz i couldn't stop, and i couldn't see where i was going so didn't know if i was heading into the path of an on-coming truck or something!
:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
Lost a patch of skin the size of a large pitta bread on my left arm, a chunk of hip, a patch off my left thigh, chipped my ankle bone and broke a finger! The bike was a right-off! Front wheel-totaled, forks like bannana's, £600 race exhaust system crushed by the front wheel, left hand side of the engine ground down to the main bearings! And of course, being a sport's bike the fairing, side panels etc were smashed to smither's too!
Oil ALL over the road from the engine casings being destroyed too!
:ouch:
Moral of the story, wear leathers, gloves, helmet etc at all times, i didn't have my leather's on (jeans and a bomber jacket- A'la Tom Cruise in top Gun)
:dunce:
Still haven't replaced the bike, but i will!
But i will NEVER ride without leathers again!

Man ... EW!

A long time ago, with my first bike, I was at a t-junction, but the junction was uphill, so you had to do some serious balancing of the clutch.

Well I got it all screwed up somehow, so when I merged into traffic, my entire front end went up and I was shooting off the hill and into the junction doing a wheelie (everyone must have thought "look at that dozy cow showing off").

The catch is, the road was only 2 narrow line wide (In England) and opposite me was a row of glass fronted shops ... I thought I was toast, because I had ZERO turning (of course) and was hurtling across the gap like a bloody missile.

The front dropped just a few feet from the opposite curb and I skidded around like some Hollywood professional ... but MAN was ... um ... my bottom twitching :P

The worst of it was that i had done enough before losing the front, that i didn't hit the pillock who had pulled out in-front of me. So because i had Third party fire and theft insurance, not fully comp, i couldn't even claim off his insurance (or mine) and so i lost the bike with no way to afford to even fix it! Plus to add insult to injury (no pun intended) i had to pay over £250 to get it back off the recovery company's clutches, before it could be sold for scrap! I barely got the recovery fee for it! :( :( :(

Mind you! Now me and my mate's can compare battle scars like Mel Gibson and Rene Russo in leathal weapon 3

Wow, that sucks. Too bad you lost your bike :( :( :(

Kolyana's a pro!

The only time I've tipped a bike was - ironically - going very slowly around a corner and I hit a patch of oil. I remember the only thought that I had in mind was "OMG! MY BIKE! MY BIKE!" I didn't give a damn about me :P

Question regarding Motegi (The oval) ... what's the best way to hit those corners? I just won in the GT championship ... really had one hell of a blast!!! ... but I'm wondering if I tackled them right.

I came in high, cut across the corner then powered out so I was drawn towards the outside wall (but no contact) ... is this the optimal technique, or should I drop speed to maintain a constant line and if so at what height?

There is also a 4th gear corner ... where the oval tightens ... so for this I was plowing into the corner and dabbing my brakes, dropping to 4th as I cut across the lower half of the track ... and then accelerating out of the corner as before.

Am I way off here?

No, that's right. That's how the NASCAR boys take their line on most circuits. Just think of it as a corner on a road course: out, in, out.

Cool ... thanks Studentdriver. God this ring was so much damned fun ... what a shame the game doesn't have more cars, damage and caution flags! I could easily do 100 laps on this thing.

Jerome - jump_ace - came to visit today and we spent 10 hrs plpaying nothing but GT4 and FOrza ... it was a riot! At the end we did nothing but run hot laps with a GT300 car at midfield, swapping times and discussing how to get them faster ... it was just so cool!

jump' is one neat guy and we'll defintively be hanging out together again :)

Jerome schooling me on the fine art of DS2 use.

Was a pleasant time to be able to chat also Nat .. Also glad that we were able to fix our leaderboard little easier that way.

Yeah it was just a blast Kolyana! I was really impressed with MSF for XBox, I dunno if I would say its better than GT4, but then again I do have an extreme bias, but its better than I'd say 99.5% of racing games out there. And MAN...how in the HELL do you guys use a WHEEL?!?!?!?! I tried it out today and in a nutshell I SSSSUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK BBBBAAAAADDDDDDD. And then she convinced me to do a rally race?!!!? What can I say I'm a sucker....and that was just hilarious it was like I was trying to race and I was 8 years old again....gotta respect you guys for actually posting KILLER times with that thing. And Kolyana's wheel stand is just PERFECT! We have some plans in the works for a new series which I can't wait for....

jump_ace

EDIT: I could really feel the estrogen pump thru my vains while using the wheel....heehe :)

jump_ace and I are better than you peasants now, because we not only waste our lives away at GTP, but we get together and spend all Sunday doing it too! :P

I can see us hotlapping again, for sure ... what a great way to improve my times.

I hate to say but I trimmed another .150 sec off my previous time, pm me if you want the replay.

Jerome

EDIT: Boyz: SHE HAS SKILLZ!!!!! I really had to work my tail off to stay ahead!

WHOAH ... send it to me! kolyana@gmail.com

I told you that there was another .1 in there ... you had the whole track DOWN, but you were easily losing .2 - .3 at the hairpin. Yes, definitively send it over ... I don't know whether I'll be able to match you, but it gives me a damned good target to shoot for.

Oh, and you're better at Forza too ... watching you play made me appreciate the game, it even looked GOOD, but the minute I took the helm all that went away again ... I just suck using a controller. Why could they not make a decent damned wheel for the Xbox? :(

I dunno why there's no wheel. I finally nailed the hairpin and got it almost as fast as you were doing it. Good times, man it was a great day!

jump_ace

go a little high and really try to nail to where you never stop turning right thru the tunnel; u slow down to 4th and hammer it right and don't stop until your are out of the tunnel, so it makes a nice circle ;) I'm gathering up the replay now hold on....I"ll email it shortly

Not sure where to put this:

I want to run a cable through the ceiling from my PS2 to my TV (+/-50'). Any ideas on what's the best way to do this? What type of cable? Will I experience any problems with voltage drop, lag, or anything else? I appreciate any help!
