Midway (One of THE greatest WWII movies ever made, though I also like War and Remembrance. I didn't count it because it was a miniseries)

The Quiet Man (One of John Wayne's greatest performances, only equaled or bettered by The Shootist)

The Sons of Katie Elder (Just an awesome western)

3:10 to Yuma (the original with Glenn Ford)

Support Your Local Sheriff (The only western funnier is Blazing Saddles)

Blazing Saddles (Funniest Western ever, but also a hilarious commentary on the stupidity of racism)

Grand Prix (one of, if not THE, the quintessential racing movies)

The Great Escape (Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, all in one movie--how did we get so damn lucky?) Could this be the movie that spawned Hogan's Heroes?

Indiana Jones 1 & 3 (All three were good, but Temple of Doom was not as good or as funny as the other two.)

Star Wars (Episode 4 - 6) With all six it makes a pretty good story. (even if the story gets a bit doof-i-fied in Episode 2 and 3) 4 and 6 are the best of the bunch, but the first 3 (last three chronologically) kick the last 3 (first three chronologically) square in the ass.

1) Initial D: The Movie

I have no clue why, I simply love this movie. It combines cars, a great story line, and some 'deep' scenes.

2) The Transporter (1&2)

Love the story lines, and Jason Stratham plays his roll well.

3) Forrest Gump

I can remember watching this film for the whole 2 hours, I just could not believe a film could be this long. But nothing stopped me from watching it for that long.

4) Rambo: First Blood

I like the simplicity, and it's much more realistic than the modern counterpart movies.

5) Transformers (2007)

Great combination's of story line, act, etc.

6) BMW films, The Hire (Both series)

7) Taxi 2

8) Taxi 1

9) Mad Max 1

10) Rambo: First Blood

A cinematic release? :indiff:

That rules out my number one choice.

1. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children- IMO FFVII is the best story line in history, be it movies, books or games. This movie carried the game's theme and characters so well (try perfectly rendering an almost 2-D character into exactly how you'd imagine they would be in 3-D, and catching their voices in personalities perfectly from no voice-overs in the game as well). The story of the movie, and the fight scenes and visuals were simply stunning. 50/10 rating from me

1. Star Wars Series- Come on, Lucas created an enitire universe which has a full history and future in it that many others have also been able to capture from these movies. The story is great, he visuals are great, it's a great series.

2. Harry Potter Series- No really, just like Lucas, Rowling created an entire world with more than just the essentials of the story included. A "magical" piece of work. It's also a very good storyline, had me riveted to the end.

3. (From this point on I pretty much tie all these movies, and might forget some that I absoloutely love). Happy Gilmore- This was simply put Adam Sandler's best movie ever, I've seen it roughly 100 times. (I remember one Christmas vacation where I watched it at least twice a day for 6 weeks!) It even got me into golf (which sadly couldn't continue after school, and I ended up losing enthusiasm after 3yrs of it anyway). I still laugh every time I see it................"That wasn't VeRy NICE!" :lol:

4. Indiana Jones Series- Action packed adventure fun, can't go past the Indiana Jones series.

5. Fast & Furious Series- OK, maybe not the best tag lines, cars or story lines to ever hit the big screen. But you simply can not go past these movies as a lover of cars, lots of fast and adrenaline filled fun. (And no.1 had a fair story line).

6. Terminator Series- Yep, pretty good if I do say so myself. Really funny if you're into the kind of comedy Arnold brings to any movie he is a tough guy in. Also an impressive story and lots of action.

7. Dukes of Hazzard- Cars, babes, comedy all in one movie?! Really?! This movie is a real movie for any bloke to see. Simply hilarious, and that Charger is oh so cool.

8. Austin Powers Trilogy- :lol:

Seen these a hundred times as well. Every second there is a new joke being made and they're all bloody funny. :lol:

9. Transformers- Simply great movie, can I say more? Just like Dukes of Hazzard it has everything a guy could want in a movie. I loves this movie start to finish.

10. Jurassic Park Trilogy- Yes, dinosaurs a very cool. :sly:

And they made them look so real, made it feel like you were on the island being chased by dinosaurs yourself (in a non-scary way). I loved all these movies too. Seen each one many many times.

Fifth Element - One of my favorite Sci Fi flicks that beat out more serious SF epics such as Blade Runner & Star Wars. I guess I place more importance on Luc Besson's style little bit more than most people. I think this is the most complete film he's ever released.

Mmmmm... I love The Fifth Element too... and it is entertainment at it's most fun... which makes me wonder if I'm being weird about what constitutes 'top 10' material. Having looked at my list, I think that 'Leon' is a better film, although a comparison between the two films illustrates Besson's considerable breadth of talent.

But yes, I prefer TFE to Star Wars (any); good call. [flamesuit]

Don't get me wrong, it's funny. I loved the scene where he can't figure out what to do with his hands, or where he tries to drive the car blindfolded. The Baby Jesus prayer is also excellent. But I'm pretty sure I can name 10 comedies that are better. It's not even the top Will Farrel comedy. Here, I'll give it a shot:

1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2) Monty Python and the Life of Brian
3) Ghostbusters
4) Ace Ventura (only time I've ever laughed so hard that I cried in the opening 5 minutes of a movie)
5) Dodgeball
6) Southpark
7) Team America
8) Wdding Singer
9) Liar Liar
10) Anchorman
and just to show you that I could have kept going...
11) Meet the Parents
12) Caddyshack (yes, Caddyshack)
oh, and your own Happy Gilmore (13) and Austin Powers (14) of course

The Potter movies weren't bad. I didn't hate them. But they're very childish. That's not to say a kids movie couldn't make the list, I wouldn't question a movie like The Increadibles, or Finding Nemo (incidentally, both of which are funnier than Talladega). But these movies have more to offer adults as well, and you can't be a top 10 movie by alienating the vast majority of people alive. To list Harry Potter over Lord of the Rings just about revokes your movie reviewing privileges altogether. Even Talladega was a better pick than Potter.

Wel just remember that Talladega was not on my own Top 10, but so many movies you have there I don't even consider funny at all. Meet The Parents and Wedding Singer for example. Dodge Ball, Liar Liar and Caddyshack I do not consider better than Talladega either. But it takes all kinds of taste I guess.

Cars is an awesome kid's movie, have you seen it? Extremely well put together, extremely. And funny too.

Edit: As for Lord of The Rings, there are way too many scenes that have no meaning whatsoever unless you've read the books, which are nothing but walking and running in the first one. They were good, but too slow IMO.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?! No way, that movie was horrible and extremely boring. I don't know how it won awards, I guess people were boring in the 80s. Apart from the ones I bolded I don't know if I agree with any others on your list, although admittedly I haven't seen many of them.

As for you comments on 'One flew over the Cuckoo's nest', well all I can say is they remind me of when Homer and Mel Gibson remade 'Mr. Smith goes to Washington'. Films do not need cars, guns and explosions to be great films; nor do they need cuts every 2 seconds to cater for short attention spans (and that's not to say that films that do can't be good - its just not a must).

'One flew over the Cuckoo's nest' is a study of madness and how its defined, the actions of a rebel within a strictly governed social group, friendship, loss and power corrupting. Its full of emotion, excellently written dialogue (from an excellent book) that is delivered stunningly well; in short its a film that more than deserves the awards it got.

Oh, and Jaws is a superb movie and I can promise that you that the funniest movie ever made is this, made in 1964.

Hmmmm... I have to be really in the mood for this film because it does feel like a long ride. However, I'm going to dig it out on the next 'movie night'* at my place and get some discussion going on that.

It does require (given the length) a bit of scheduling to watch and you need to be in the right mood, but when you are its for me the best 'heist' movie yet made. I'm just annoyed that every DVD release has been poor in regard to both picture and audio quality, this film is so in need of a great hi-def release.

In Holden's defense, I'll say that many pre-1980 movies require a certain level of maturity/culture to understand and even enjoy. Both qualities he certainly lacks in regard to culture and whatnot.

A good movie should have an entertaining story line as paramount, and watching a young Jack Nickelson (How do you spell his last name) in that context of boredom just doesn't suit me. I must admit that Big Chief as he is most commonly know was a funny fella though. I feel no need to be educated during a movie about the human psche either. If I wanted to do that I'd go to university and become a psychiatrist.

The IMDB top 250 is voted for by the general public (its is however interesting to note that most critics also rate all these films very highly as well).

As its a public vote (by movie fans) your JC analogy is simply not valid. These are the films that people who love films think are the 10 best of all time.

I didn't say that you have a short attention span, I said its a common trend in modern movies to regular jump cut to keep peoples attention - you then linked that to yourself.

However plenty happens in 'One flew', just because its dialogue does mean that nothing is happening. Its through dialogue that films develop a strong plot, and what ever you do, don't watch 'No Country for old men' you will hate it.

So watch a film for a few hours or study for 5 years+, slightly different things here. May I also point out that not having an interest in the topic of a film does not make it a poor film.

Do you really want me to go and do the same to your top ten films? Its easy to do and a cheap shot, if that's all that you got out of Jaws then I suggest that you didn't actually watch the film very carefully.

Now please keep in mind that you are free to like/loath whatever films you want, I just find that your picks indicate a love of films with minimal plot, lots of action and a smattering of fairly basic comedy. Now that's not to say that I don't enjoy films of that type at all, I most certainly do. take for example 'Shoot 'em up', great film and very enjoyable. Load and brash, funny in parts with a minimal amount of plot and a LOT of action; I could quite happily watch it (and own it on Blu-ray), but I would never class it as one of the greatest films ever made.

The IMDB top 250 is voted for by the general public (its is however interesting to note that most critics also rate all these films very highly as well).

As its a public vote (by movie fans) your JC analogy is simply not valid. These are the films that people who love films think are the 10 best of all time.

Are you honestly saying that 'One flew over the Cuckoos nest' doesn't have a strong entertaining story line? As a criteria I would agree that a solid well written story line is important to a film, so how does that explain having the Fast n' Furious series in your top ten?

F&F 1 wasn't a bad story line, but it gained a bad reputation for the ricer cars. Tokyo Drift wasn't that bad either really, but again a bad reputation for ricer cars and fake driving scenes. I just love watching cars racing around, is that a crime?

I didn't say that you have a short attention span, I said its a common trend in modern movies to regular jump cut to keep peoples attention - you then linked that to yourself.

However plenty happens in 'One flew', just because its dialogue does mean that nothing is happening. Its through dialogue that films develop a strong plot, and what ever you do, don't watch 'No Country for old men' you will hate it.

It was pretty funny too in that film when that one patient kept telling another one he "was full of s**t". I liked that. That nurse really pissed me off though, she was annoying to watch and didn't reveal much about herself either making her very very boring. Seeing as she was the other "side" of the argument I guess in that film, it made for more dullness IMO.

So watch a film for a few hours or study for 5 years+, slightly different things here. May I also point out that not having an interest in the topic of a film does not make it a poor film.

May I ask a very direct question here, do films with a lot of talking in them bore you, and how old are you (not to have a 'pop' out of real interest)?

Umm let's see, films with talking in them. Harry Potter is mostly talking, I liked that. Umm, I need some examples of films with mostly talking in them that I might have watched (I'm too tired now, need to go to bed really). I am 18yrs old.

Do you really want me to go and do the same to your top ten films? Its easy to do and a cheap shot, if that's all that you got out of Jaws then I suggest that you didn't actually watch the film very carefully.

Now please keep in mind that you are free to like/loath whatever films you want, I just find that your picks indicate a love of films with minimal plot, lots of action and a smattering of fairly basic comedy. Now that's not to say that I don't enjoy films of that type at all, I most certainly do. take for example 'Shoot 'em up', great film and very enjoyable. Not wanting to bash you on this but...

I've not watched Tokyo Drift but i very much doubt that the driving scenes in it, or in the Dukes of Hazard for that matter, can hold a candle to the ones in a film such as Bullit. If you want to see cars racing around on screen then watching actual motorsport on TV should satisfy your needs better.

No crime in watching films with cars in them, just that FnF are not exactly the finest examples of the genre. Bullitt (not even a car move - but one of the best car chases ever - same is true of Ronin), Grand Prix, The Driver, Le Mans all better the FnF series for driving.

Both car chases worth a thousand FnF's and excellent films to go with them, with true plot development and strong story lines.

FnF had, in my opinion, a truly appalling and basic story line. Something that got worse as the series went on, they hold true to the basic 'action' movie plot thread, which is more a series of vaguely linked set-pieces rather than a true story. Again not to say that that alone makes a film bad, but it certainly doesn't make it a good film either.

The nurse is meant to piss you off, a significant part of the film is the struggle between her and McMurphy for control of the other patients. As far not revealing much about herself, were we watching the same film? She has a single minded approach to how to 'care' for her patients and a shockingly brutal manner in dealing with anything that alters that (as the climax of the film clearly shows - she knows that McMurphy is sane, yet this does not change her 'resolution' of the situation), yet she ultimately cares for those she looks after and is aware of the impact a force like McMurphy can have on them (for both good and bad). For me about as far from a 'boring' character as you can get.

The dialogue is the potter series is basic and does little to develop the characters, it does serve to introduce the 'set-pieces' of the films. Given the other films in your top ten I would however agree that it is a dialogue packed film by comparison. However they are not what I would class as dialogue dominated films at all.

The reason why I asked your age is because it does often have a bearing on the type of films people find appealing, at 18 you would have had little experience of older films (your comment on pre-90s films gives this away to a degree) and your viewing I would guess has (to date) been dominated by the Hollywood blockbuster factory.

Citizen Kane sucks! There, I said it.

I don't think it sucks, but I do think it's overrated.

The reason why AFI and others say its so great because it revolutionized filming by filming in extreme camera angles and it's use of deep focus.

It was a story about someone living the "American Dream", going from poor to rich, which is one reason why I'm sure AFI put it at #1, but I was shocked to find out BFI had it at #1 as well.

So in the end I think alot of the praise it gets is not for how good of a movie it was but what it did to movie making

Great movie worth a watch, but I don't even know if it would make my top 50 best movies of all time list.

Don't sell Dukes short. I haven't seen Bullit, but I watched the clip Scaff posted above and I can say Dukes has some pretty impressive driving. It's a little different because most of it is rally type driving, but I think it's more impressive overall (not the jumps though, I'll take the jumps in Bullit over the jumps in dukes any day). FnF 3 doesn't really hold a candle to any of the above though.

Regardless, a car chase scene isn't enough to put a movie in my top 10 list.

FnF3 suffered from too many set-piece scenes with unrealistic seeming driving scenarios, but some of the chase scenes were good. At least it wasn't as blatantly idiotic as FnF1 (of the 30-second quarter miles) or 2F2F (more of a TV episode on the big screen than anything else).

I'm not even going to touch the plot and dialogue... you just accept that that's going to be bad. But the race at the end of the movie was one of the worst on film. Too much unrealistic "rubber-banding" in the whole scene... especially where a car driving down a hilly road manages to catch up with a car falling off the cliff a few bends further up. :lol:

Favorite car chase, as of this moment? Bourne Supremacy, taxi scene. Unfortunately, the hyper-kinetic camera-work does its best to actually hide everything that's going on... it's worth watching in slo-mo on your home DVD player... just so you can figure it out... :lol:
