Anybody out there following the Grand Am?

Audi Sport AG

They are not running the Rolex 24 from what I understand. Car is being run by Brad Kettler for Audi North America. They are only doing the tests as that is the first chassis for the Grand-Am specs. They were not on the entry list for the 24 as of yesterday.

Like I said, it was just going off the test.

So are there any other DP chassis bar corvette. Or are most of the teams sticking to the old chassis???

If memory serves me correct, here's what the teams are running (Again, going off the test):

Riley DG3:

Chip Ganassi Racing - 2
Micheal Shank Racing - 2

Riley MK XX:

50+Predator/Allegra Motorsports - 1

Starworks - 2

Lola B08/70

Krohn Racing - 1

Dallara DP-01

Doran Racing - 1

What if Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, and more manufacturers joined the DP class? (Porsche has enough GT cars in the series, might as well get up with the big boys), and possibly if the 458 and R8 go well, that would be cool and maybe they would make better looking DP cars. Just a thought.

I doubt they want to be in the series with prototypes of that type. Makes more sense to spend the money on cars that can be used in 3 different series' rather than something that's rather domestic in appeal...

Yeah. Also, does anyone know exactly how the DTM and Grand Am will be? because on Speed channel they said it will be a different series just for America that is owned by the DTM. I hope not! I hope its the real DTM!

I would love to see Ferrari and Audi engines power the DP's but we'll see. Brumos racing used to run Porsche V8's until they jumped down to the GT Class and I believe Action Express Racing uses Porsche V8's in their DP's.

Flying Lizard also did a one-off run in the DP class last year in a flat-6 powered DP and were one of the fastest cars on the track until they had to retire. It seems that the under 4.5l engines (which are permitted to run lighter and have 6 gears instead of 5) are quite competitive... so it's strange that more teams don't use them

Grand Am would essentially license the series from DTM for here in America. The teams will be American and the series will be completely separate from Europe's DTM. It will also serve as a companion series to NASCAR, Grand Am and other events for the time being. If it becomes insanely popular there's the possibility it could strike it out on it's own but we'll see.

Level 5 was doing development for a Ferrari engined DP the first year they ran the Rolex24, by gave up. As far as engines go, they have to conform to the homologation for the series. Brumos used Flat-6s for the entire time they ran a DP, with Porsche support. The Porsche V8s that Action Express used until this year were built by the Lazzano Brothers in Texas. They were not supported by Porsche in any way. In fact, Porsche tried to keep them from using them the first year, to no avail. By the way, the BMW engines are S62 5.0 liter V8s from the E39 M5 that are built by Dinan and, I think, without BMW support. It isnt as easy as just dropping whatever engine you want in. In fact, most manufacturers are very, very careful about how their image is used.

I can imagine a Ferrari 458 or Enzo or FXX inspired DP. I remember Ferrari talking about it and then it was confirmed and then nothing happened with it. Maybe they were informed of the new rules and thus, Ferrari might be developing a DP for 2013.

Surely, if ferrari wants to do a prototype, why not just go all out with a P1 for the WEC. Like I said earlier though, Level 5 was developing a couple of Ferrari V8s built by Dinan for their first go at the Rolex. IIRC, they had some problems with the Bottom End of them not holding together. I remember watching some special about it, but dont remember exactly why Level 5 quit the program.

It's the logical decision. If you walked up to 100 people and asked them this and ONLY this "Do you like DTM?" right now, how many people do you think will respond with a "yes", how many will respond with a "meh" and how many with a "Is that some kind of sexual act?" I'm going to go for the latter over the two former.

Few American's know what DTM is, fewer care and even fewer still would regularly attend more than one event if they came here. Not to mention it's run by Europeans who would have little to no knowledge of how to make an American road racing series work here... let alone how America works!

The best option is to give the series to someone who knows what they're doing, run by American teams that Americans can care about and put them next to automotive events that Americans already care about. I suspect that if some serious driving talent gets behind the wheels of the cars, then there is no reason that an American series wouldn't be every bit as exciting as the European version.

I just hope that at least one or two American car companies develop cars to add some identity to the car pool.

Also... if Super GT aligns their GT500 rules with DTM specs, there's the possibility that there could be a world cup race with the top teams from Japan, U.S.A. and Europe all on the track at the same time against each other.

All this discussion of Grand Am/NASCAR, etc reminds me of when I was at Watkins Glen last summer for a Grand-Am/NASCAR race weekend. I went for the Grand Am race, NASCAR was just a "bonus". I arrived late the first day(Friday) but not much was going on anyways. So the next morning I went to the grand stand at the end of main straight just as the Sprint Cup NASCARs were finishing one of their practice rounds, and the it was next to impossible to find a good seat as every grand stand was packed full, as well as the infield section. Once the NASCARs finished and the Grand Am cars came out for practice, everyone got up and left, and I mean everyone, there were probably 50 people left around the track watching the race. I thought this was quite sad to be honest, as I find Grand Am a lot more interesting than NASCAR(but thats just me..).. Later on in the evening, I was strolling thorough the paddock area, I started at NASCAR only to find guards blocking the entrance not letting anyone in, I didn't really care, but I'm sure this was a let down for most. So I made my way over to the Grand Am paddock area. When I arrived, there wasn't a guard in site, all the cars were outside and the most of the crew and drivers were out talking to people. I made my way around to each team and eventually came to the Sahlen's team(they run Mazda RX-8s) and I was talking to one of the drivers(I forget his name, sorry:P) and I told him I was here for Grand Am, and NASCAR was just a bonus, his face lit up like a Christmas tree and he smiled and said "well I wouldn't consider that much of a bonus". Anyways I'm looking forward to the new season this year, and I'm especially excited for the Daytona 24! Luckily for me, my exams finish the day before the race starts, so I'll be watching that for sure!

Sounds awesome! My friend that races Formula Ford here is very good friends with Mark Bkundell, and he grew up with Mark's son. I remember talking to my friend's dad that weekend and my friend was uo in Walktins Glen with Mark and Mark's sin because Mark was running the United Autosports DP car.

APR Motorsports is going to be bringing seven cars to Daytona! Including the new R8, their brand new S4 (replacing the one that was wrecked mid-way last season), two GTI's (it's unknown what the second GTI will be as their red 3-door was wrecked when they competed at Petite Le Mans with WC, or if it's the MkV they keep around or a new MkVI to replaced the wrecked red one) and lastly three brand new Jetta GLI's!

Very exciting news from my favorite Grand Am team!

I really doubt right now that Ferrari would build either a DP or an LMP chassis. They probably wouldnt be super-competitive right out of the box, and it would tarnish the name a little.

If there was a Grand-Am race at Infineon or Laguna Seca, I'd go watch. It really is sad to see that their viewer numbers are so much lower than NASCAR or ALMS. It's a great series.

Remember the 333 SP's? And Grand-Am was at Laguna Seca last year do they stopped going there?

I know that Continental tyre went there, not sure about the whole of Grand-Am with DP's and such.

They did and will be back 9/9/12.

Really getting excited for Daytona for some real racing!!!

If you are wondering who I'm rooting for, look at my avatar.:sly:
(Don't care what team wins as long as one of them do)

Just a question...what's what you watched in California got to do with Grand-Am?

I'll be watching some G-A this year thanks to the Corvette DP but if they weren't added I wouldn't care less. Here's hoping for a Suntrust or SoD win at Daytona!
