Career discussion

After watching some more of the career mode videos, I think I'm quite happy with how I've interpreted things to be.

I've decided to play it as if I have been racing as an amateur for a while and am now attempting to mix it up with the big boys. (I know this sort of stuff doesn't matter to everyone, but I think it's cool to roleplay it as if you were real life). Anyone know if the Group 2 cars will be in at launch? That's the closest to the category I'm working towards IRL and it would be awesome to do some of that before starting the career.

And another feature that I thought of that would be very cool is driver ratings - as in, FIA style ratings used to balance teams in Pro-Am races. With the system of invitational races like the LM24, I think it would be awesome to get a seat on a top team as a 3rd driver, with minimal/no say on setups/strategy/etc and minimal seat time, up to eventually becoming the lead driver with plenty of input to everything.

Looks like some career races are extremely short, or is this a bug?
In this video, the max race length for the Superkarts is 3 laps in race1 of the weekend and 5 laps in the second race. At just over 50 seconds a lap, it's the shortest race I've ever seen... (skip to 13:45)

It depends on what the option they've chosen for the race length. Later on in the career, the races are much longer.

If I want every race within the career (aside from the LMP/WEC type races, of course) to take roughly 30 minutes, is that possible? Can race lengths be changed on the fly, race weekend to race weekend?
If the Series calls for me to race Monza one week and Monaco the next, can I tailor the race lengths for both to my specific preference for each track?

BTW, no is a perfectly fine answer. I don't really expect all THAT much customization within the confines of the Career Mode. I am just trying to feel out the possibilities.

Yes, you can. Each event weekend has a slider that has a percentage, rather than a lap count, that you can adjust for the race length. If you want to do less of a certain race, you are fully allowed to do that.

You can select custom race length and AI difficulty for every event. However, you would have to currently exit back to the main menu in between races, if you want to do that.

Lower tier races and regional series may be shorter in length, even at 100% length setting. Once you get to higher tier/world/euro championships the maximum race length increases and you pretty much can make them last 30 or more minutes (the actual length will be in Laps, unless it's the endurance series, which is minutes/hours).

In the video he tries to move the slider for the race length, which goes from 2 laps minimum to 3 laps maximum. Or is there a different slider before starting the race weekend?

I find it concerning that over time when career races are shown, it seems they're getting shorter and shorter, while they always said it would mimic the real deal...
I just watched the video preceding to the one I posted where he's racing the Karts. Those are basically races of less than a minute... That's pretty ridiculous...

Odd, when I tried the karts earlier, although they were the 125cc shifter kart, the races were about 3-4 minutes long. When I've tried the Clios, I could have races up to 16 laps long.

As far as the Kart goes, yes they are this short, somewhere between 4-6 laps even at max setting. I don't follow kart, don't care much about it, but what is a realistic kart race length? To me it seems too short, but maybe real kart events are also short (10 laps maybe?) let me know and I'll see what the devs say about it.

Anyway, regardless of the length, I just tried it recently and it's quite fun to drive, which was a bit unexpected for me since I never cared about it at all. But after a few laps my head started to spin with all these turns, so for me personally length is perfect, but I can see it may be too short.

For the Clios, that already sounds more towards the length in reality (provided that it's not a 30 sec lap ;)). But for the Karts it seems really strange that they don't even give you the opportunity to set a more realistic race length. They have the slider, but you can't actually make use of it...

This is going back a ways, but a typical 100cc club race for me back in the day was 10-15 laps of 33-50 seconds depending on the track. Pro races were longer but only about 15-20 laps or so. The career kart races should be a minimum of that long, with the option of longer for those that enjoy that type of thing, IMO.

I got to see Superkarts in the flesh at a local meet late last year. They had a 10 minute qualifying session followed by 3 8 lap races. Track is 2.41km (1.5 miles) and the fastest race time was 7:39. Of course, this is just state/club level competition and I have no idea as to what it would be like at a nationals style event, but it was still quite short and sweet.

The Superkart world championship has races of around 50 kilometers to give an example. waaaaay more than selectable in the career it seems.

These are the kind of details that could be sticking points once the game comes out.

We hear the game is fully customisable and we already know it's going to look great and feel great. So if the customisation is restricted to quite (if not strangely) short races in the early career days, people will complain. And, I believe, quite rightly so.

Since there is already a slider, please let it go to 200% or even more!
Make each race an Event, an adventure!

Exactly what I meant :)
Going longer than the real life distance could bring some problems though in disciplines where pit stops don't exist.

I once did a private karting race with my mates, it was 40 min long.
Are the real karting races that count so much shorter?

(If they are then I'll shut up! :D)

At my local karting track the official club championship races are 60 minutes.

Thanks, I really appreciate how much and how quickly we're being given feedback.
... and I'd give away my favourite pyjamas to get a peep in the WMD forum! :D

is it possible to go back and re-race any career events you've already completed? for example if a friend came over and we wanted to race some events i'd already done but with less laps, or do you have to finish that particular career and wait till the next season?

@DG_Silva Thanks, i agree what's the point of having race length sliders if they are restricted that much. I think it won't be a biggie for SMS to extend the lap count, so that if someone enjoys the kart races he can do a proper one 👍

edit: Has it been adjusted already reading @bleeder 's comments above?
