Sebastian Vettel got done in Hungary last year for that. He was leading the race when the safety car was deployed in response to the Kubica-Sutil incident in the pits. On the safety car in-lap, the race leader effectively becomes the safety car when the safety car itself peels off. Most drivers like to back the field up a little bit to bunch the field together to give a clear run when racing resumes; the last theing they want is to get caught behind the safety car before it peels off. But Vettel fell too far behind the safety car. The leader has to stay within ten car lengths of the safety car, but Vettel backed right off and got a drive-through for it. It's an obscure rule, and I think it was the first time it has actually been enforced.I think it be that you have a certain type of distance window between yourself and the other cars to work with.
