PMC Discussion Thread: 3.0 Interest Check

SVX;5705376I've completely forgot what I was meaning. I was meaning people could "donate" pictures so we could have a competition of other people's GT5 pictures (everyone has the same one) and we could edit it. Sorry for the confusion.[/QUOTE
I like the idea behind it. Would be an interesting competition to run.

SVX - Interesting. Perhaps we should flesh this out a bit more? A "remix" competition, if you will?

Competition News: For those who don't check it - we're back up on the front page! And to celebrate this (and because I'm incredibly late with it): return of the prize cars! They'll be unique models, usually borrowing from real life cars, or will be tied into the theme at hand during whichever weeks. Sometimes, I may toss up a ticket instead. We also accept donations by those generous community-minded people. When I do supply the cars, most likely they'll come with relatively rare paints, as in the case of these two this week (first is PMC, second is 2.0):

somehow I only won the weeks where no price cars were handed...:indiff:

But nice to se that the comps are on the front page again! :)

Something that has come up recently with a decline in competition entries of late was that the poll size for the CCCL competition became too large as a top 20. For a number of weeks there were only just that number of entries in total so a decision was made to lower the poll size to 15. This week (after the comps were posted in the news again) entries are up again across the competitions and it could well mean that the poll size should be increased again.
Tonilleshusband has come up with this suggestion;
Why not make the number of poll spots dependant on the number of entries. Just put it out there that 30 entries = 10 poll spots, 45 = 15, 60 = 20 or whatever. That way you're not reacting after the fact.

Do you like this idea and it is a policy you would like to see adopted?
I'm keen to hear your thoughts.

I think a percentage for the top poll spots would be a good way to go. Perhaps though we may want to set a min and/or max number. That way if there is a popular theme and 100 entries you don't end up with a poll of 30 or 40. Maybe set a max of 20-25, min 5-7 and scale in between?

Hmmm, it might work, though it will require an ever-so-slight change to the current formula - instead of having the "limbo" time between sending out the PM to the judge, asking for the poll, and having them close it, the Host should just close the thread once he sends the PM.

Last week, as an example, 5 new entries were posted between me sending out the poll request PM, and receiving it. With this new idea, however, I would have to go through the thread and count the number of legitimate entries (discounting ineligible ones) before sending.

I'm not exactly opposed to the idea, since it does put a much more firm deadline out there for people anyways, but I wouldn't mind an open discussion, since it does mean a bit more work as well. Back in GT4 times, the poll sizes were only shrunk when there were numerous consecutive weeks of having less entries than poll size, but with GT5, it's been hard to nail down what exactly is "consistent".

Opinions? :)

I think it's a good idea to some degree, too many poll entries could create very scattered votes and it perhaps being many tie-breakers. That's not so probable, but I think having a poll bigger than 40 would create a problem.

About what you are saying SlipZ, I think that having the time between sending and receiving the poll is good to have. I've used it many times due to my laziness. ;)
But I see no big harm in having a strict end time. But maybe the closing 'directly' could vary depending on the entries that were posted. If just 10 entries were posted before you send the PM, and 5 more arrive before you get the response from the judge. Those 5 make quite the difference.

Just another weird idea. If we ever get to 40 or even 50 needed for a poll why not split the poll into randomly selected A and B side and then have a head to head as a final.

Yeah. But that would probably be very time consuming. But with more hosts, it could be made easier.

I don't have the time to host a full comp by myself but I would happily help out any of our hosts with putting this stuff together.

I think it could be left to the judge rather than the host. Since the judge has to look at all the entries anyway they could tally them up and do a simple calculation to see how many poll slots to fill. Tell them "Take your number of entries considered, divide by 3, round up if necessary and send that many finalists to the host. No more than 20 and no less than 5." Of course substitute numbers as agreed upon but that takes the extra burden off the host and adds just a miniscule step for the judge.

Just my two cents. :D

Hmmm. All interesting discussion guys, and I'll keep it in mind for future weeks. For now though, at least for PMC and 2.0, I feel the current numbers of 25/15 (or 12/12 and 8/8 for H2H weeks) works pretty decently, given the current level of participation. We're usually cutting about half the entries to turn into the poll, which I think is pretty reasonable. We'll see what happens next month though, as September typically shows an up-tick in activity after holiday-happy August :). What Nato decides to do for CCCL, however, is up to him!

This Week's Prizes:
We're taking a trip to Italy this week - the poll winners from Week 38's polls will receive one of these cars. First car goes to PMC, second, to 2.0!

Great work on the news items slipz, you do a great job summarising whats going on. I've been in them twice now

With regards to the secret santa comps would it be possible to lock the thread after the theme has been set so nobody can reply with "entry sent" etc. Just think this would help quite a bit with the "trying to keep it secret" part of the competition lol

I think this is a good idea but you would need to also sticky it. At the moment I still believe the Secret Santa competition is an unofficial competition so it is not allowed to be a sticky thread.

Maybe when it finally becomes an official competition.

Just a quick question: is it required to post an 'entry sent' in the secret santa comp? I mean, isn't it part of the comp that it is secret?

for me it is alright so i know how many are interested and who is , if i know mogled or celingfan or bmxmitch are sending in their entries i know i have to to an amazing work to top it and at the end you never know who made it into the polls :)

Week 39, Week 40 Winners: No, I didn't forget about you guys! The prizes are being sent out all this week - Level 23 tickets for all four of you!

Week 41 Winners: ...whomever you will be. We're picking up two prizes influenced by GT3 - their colours, specifically. Both cars come with the full assortment of reversible mods; all you have to worry about are engine tuning mods and weight reductions, if you'd like. Also a full complement of tires. They are brought to you by Mazda:

Hi SlipZ! I've had some trouble with my PS but it's now back online. I never received a prize car for week 38. Sorry about the inconvenience. It is just to let you know that the prize cars actually mean something to me, they are worth much more than the ordinary dealer cars ;)

Great news, Zam! I've got it sitting in the garage awaiting your return to PSN, so I'll send it in a few minutes.

I've been essentially living in two cities for the last two weeks, so I haven't been online very much. I'll get the Week 41 prizes out to their proper owners over the next few days, I'll bake up something for Nads winning PMC, and I also have a little something to give to the Tournament Qualifier winners. I'll also look into creating some cars for the Week 43 winners as the polls go up tomorrow. Me (just) winning 2.0 this week means I do get a day's break in there!

with regards to pictures making the poll but being disqualified is it not possible for the judge to select a replacement picture to go in the poll in its place if its noticed soon enough? say if its noticed before 20 votes have been cast then replacement can go in. or another way to do it could be to ask the judge to select the 20 or however many pics it is plus 1 back up picture.

another thing i've just thought of is having a wild card in the poll selected by someone else other than the judge

Wild card sounds good in theory, in practise however it could be a bit of a headache for the host. It would mean waiting to get the poll from the winner then contacting the runner up for the wild card (letting them know what entries made the poll so they know what's left to choose from). This could delay getting the poll posted quite significantly. Would be slightly easier if the host chose the wild card but then you've got the same person picking it each week. Just my thoughts as a host. Nice idea though. :)

Host picking a wild card each week sounds good to me. All said & done a wild card is exactly that & i dont see as it matters who picks it.

I guess we'll have to see what SlipZtrEm thinks of the idea.
In other news; coming soon I will be putting up a prize car each week for CCCL.
Currently I'm offering a choice of cars for Secret Santa (this month featuring Mad Finn Tuners tuned cars). That will change to a single prize car each for SSC and CCCL.
November will feature tuned cars from a different GTP Tuning Garage.

Nato pretty much summed up my thoughts; nice in theory, but would provide extra work for us as hosts if we had to wait on two people in succession in PM's. And personally, I wouldn't want to be the one tasked with picking a wild card each week.

If someone did want to implement it, there's another way as well; when PM-ing your new theme, add in a random number between, say, 1 and 100 (ish). The host would never speak of this number, but whoever posts a rules-complying image closest to that number in the thread, without going over, would be a shoe-in for the poll. That would work without introducing any bias (though you could always be posting in said thread to manipulate the post numbers ;) ), but I just think any way of including the wild card might be too much work for very little pay-off, relatively.

Nato's reminded me - I've fallen a bit behind on prize cars. I'm going to try to get them up a week in advance from now on, and I think it's very cool what he's doing with Tuning Garages, as it really involves the community. I really wish gifting cars wasn't so cumbersome - I've been spoiled the past week by my introduction to Forza.

Anywho, I'm going to round up the names of who I owe prize cars to, and start sending them out. This week's poll winners (the 45th week) will get... one of the new RM cars each, if they are infact included with the update that hits tomorrow. Or Kaz' N24 car (if giftable). I'll figure something out!

Wow! This thread is has been deserted! Anyways...
I have an idea before 2012 arrives, End of the Year Competition.
This is where the past winning entries of PMC, 2.0, Photshop and CCCL competition will be called "Best PMC/2.0/Photoshop/CCCL Entry of the Year ____".

What do ya think?:sly:
