I want one of those elite controllers to be able to use the paddles on the back for shifting and clutch would be very helpful. I don't use clutch now because I can't get comfortable with it on any of the other setups I've tried. $150 bucks is pricey though, especially since i have 2 brand new controllers.
Have you tried setting the clutch to the right joystick, and the upshift to LB, and the downshift to RB? This is by far the best way I've come across.

No I haven't tried that one. Do you keep your middle fingers on the triggers then? I've tried using the LB as clutch, since Forza 3 I've always kept my index fingers on the triggers constantly. I guess it's just out of habit that it throws me off when I take my index fingers off. I tried for a while the other day using my middle fingers for the triggers, but that really messed up my steering then.
I use x for up shift and b for downshift. I wish I could set clutch to A and Y buttons simultaneously. Then I could X/A up shift and B/Y downshift with my thumb.

The only reason I've got used to the LB-as-clutch approach is, bizarrely, the DualShock controller. I'd always keep all four fingers on the shoulder buttons for games growing up, so moving over to the XBox, it's stuck. I'm now such a fan of using the triggers for acceleration and braking, and the face buttons for up- and down-shifts, that I tend to change any racing game's controls to mirror Forzas. I certainly did with DriveClub.

I've been noticing an odd turning issue with front-drive cars once in a while too. Always in low-speed corners (typically Yas Marina will trigger it), it's as @ImaRobot says: the front wheels just refuse to turn. It's not normal understeer, and it's not easily repeatable, but it seems to be tied up with the FFB and general aids that a controller uses.

No, it's not necessary to keep fingers on all the triggers. I only use my pointer finger on the respective hand for each of the Trigger/bumpers. The way I have it set up is that Upshift will be the left bumper, so it doesn't interfere with me being on the gas as it's the opposite hand. It'll be the same idea for the brakes, Right bumper so it doesn't interrupt me when I'm braking. I reversed the clutch so I pull down on the right stick to engage it.

This is basically what I've boiled it down too as well. The FFB is somehow causing the steering inputs to disconnect, and it sucks because more often than not I'm mid turn when it happens(just look at those videos.) It happens to me in any drivetrain though, and it can happen on any turn for me. Looks like you might be encountering the early stages of the problem :X

I can't justify the price! I am interested in one, though.
me, and everybody I know that got one, not even one of us ..justified the price :D
most of us where impulse buyers, then word of mouth.
I can tell you that 100% of these people I know, they all say that its one of the best buys they did after using it for a day or two.

nah, forget the paddles for shifting, as its faster the old fanshioned forza way (A=clutch, B=upshift, X=downshift=> hit both buttons at once with your thumb)
paddles are great for when you need both hands on the thumbsticks, like fps shooters.
its the thumbsticks themselves that are and feel metal not plastic, the much better triggers and the great material grip that make the difference. and you put the tall thumbstick left side and you've got even more steering precision.

personally I change pads after thumbsticks go soft. these metal thumbsticks if they last, they justify the price alone long term, let alone everything else.
not that I wouldnt like of course for it to be $99 or $59 :D

OK finally sat down and spent a bit of time on Forza 6..and i think the new update has made the driving more enjoyable, i'm using controller and not my TX, but hey i really enjoyed it.
Going to play it more, seems less tail happy and less ice racing now? Placebo?
Slinging the Williams Clio around brands hatch was driving nirvana!

My internet has been screwy so I thought it was just me but apparently not:

It may be an Xbox live thing, I'm reading that other games are having trouble connecting to multiplayer too.
Yeah. Can't get on any multiplayer games, period. Shame too, because I was gonna go drifting with a few friends online on FH2.

You just saved me a lot of money my friend, I wish I could get you a cold one!

Glad to see that someone finally found use out of that. I've been suggesting this since FM4, but most users just don't seem to like it. I think it feels alot more fluid and natural, like an actual manual transmission. It's also not any slower then the other methods, but it does sound like it would be.

Wait, you put upshift on the left?!

You're backwards!
Yes! There's good reasoning behind it though. I switched it like that so there's less interruption when braking/full throttle. If I had the Gas at the same side as the upshift, it would be more of a hassle and require me to use more than one finger per hand :P. I've been doing it that way for half a decade now, so it's forever going to be that way

I just tried the A as clutch method on hot laps with the new GTR. Sorry if these are stupid questions.
When you use the clutch, is it a simultaneous thing? Or do you use the clutch like in real life and hit it just before shifting? I was pressing the clutch the same time for the most part, I tried "rolling" the buttons with my thumbs pressing A and then rolling into X to up shift, but it didn't seem any better, slower in fact. I also noticed starting from a stopped position, I had to get the Rpms between 4-6k before I released the clutch or the TCS would kick in and stall out the rev. (I only use TCS on high powered cars). I also noticed that even when I had great shifts, it seemed the tach would "bounce" a couple times off the redline before shifting, but I should try it on some different cars also I guess.

That's a reason why I didn't like it. My thumbs are odd I guess, so I was having trouble with the A+X at the same time. So I opted out for a different layout. However, I'm pretty sure you can mash them both at the exact same time to get it working.

As for the TCS situation, I'm not entirely sure as I've yet to actually switch it on. Also, the Revs will bounce. Mine bounces every shift since I never let go of the throttle between shifts. Replays will elongate the noise as if you where just holding it for a second or two.

You can mash it pretty much simultaneously with A and X/B but there is a small limit in the game to how quick the cars are allowed to shift so that's where the bouncing revs mostly come from, especially if you're holding the throttle. I'm using B for upshift and just mashing the two buttons simultaneously works fine. When I'm downshifting I just roll my thumb across A and X because my hands aren't big enough to hit them reliably and simultaneously like I can with A and B due to X being further away, it's a very quick process but due to it being downshifting it's not as crucial to be quick as upshifting.

I can't answer the TCS problem either as I never used it in FM6 but there are some cars which with stock gearing will stall most of the time at race start (when you're not holding clutch down, and sometimes even with clutch held down) only when you're using manual with clutch, some notable examples from memory are the Audi R18 and Holden V8 Supercar, this can usually be tuned out quite easily but just don't be too surprised if it happens.

Thanks for both of those replies, I have been running some free races with clutch, and I'm getting the hang of it. I definitely notice a difference In shift time. I'll probably use manual without clutch in leagues until I get the hang of starting and reversing from a stop down better. (Because of the constant league wrecking). Multiplayer is still down for me, and so are the leaderboards. It's weird though rivals works and so do the drivatars. It was the TCS causing the stalls, if I don't have Rpms up high enough, the second that TCS light comes on it killed it. Thanks again!

Well i'm putting time into this game now...wow..its special. Tyres seem more realistic now and having such fun just got the car pass...well it was cheap cheap and i'm finally feeling like i felt with Forza 4....

Maybe I've missed something and this is already a known issue, but I boot up the game and the last car I was in, the TS040, shows up like this:
