Don't know if this is the right place to post this now and i will mention it again when organisation starts afresh for the next lan, but the 'old faithful' venue is now longer available. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the urn issue, but they wrote spcifically to tell me that we wouldn't be able to hire the hall anymore. They say its due to a 'regular booking.' Maybe Vexd can sort Farndon or Roo the location he tried to get before....?

Well, you're welcome to become honourary Banbarians.

Shall I start looking for a place to LAN?

Is this how it begins, a bit of pro-active site-searching?

V.

I think I recall you saying somewhere in here not to ask who you are, Venari, but I'll ask anyway: Who the FRICK are you?

PM sent. And remember, you ain't seen me, right?

:)

Could i please have a copy of that PM? I'd love to know who you are!!
Also love the idea of a LAN at Banbury so go ahead and search! When Famine begins the next LAN thread you can post your idea and see how it is accepted! Seems our options may be limited this time round!

Can I be the first to ask...

Where is Banbury?

Google maps is your friend, my friend :)
M40 between Birmingham & London

PS location sounds good, might give me a chance to visit my dad in Surrey and drop off some pressies with him too!
(assuming its still 27 Oct weekend)
-------------------

Not to steal Famine's thunder but yes I do suspect it starts with a venue & a number of reasonably priced hotels.

It would be fantastic to see you at the LAN again Robb!! Will also make a refreshing change to be part of the hotel cult too! Gonna be a brilliant excuse to be kid free for the weekend. Bring it on!!!

Oh bugger, I've done it now.

Oh, alright, I'll try to find a Banbury venue or two. :scared:

And the PM self-destructed after it was read.

Can't talk now, got to get sleep before my secret mission to foreign parts. Prob'ly shouldn'a told you that. No, it's nothing to do with lasers. Oh, poop.

Venari.

You're a talking CD tray?

Lol, although Banbury is a lot closer to London, travel time is only 20 minutes less than going to newark.
Can someone explain the reason for that? :)
(the train ride itself is only 6 minutes difference, the rest is because the trains leave in different stations)

Probably more stops between Banbury and LV than Newark and LV. You go more across the country going to Banbury whereas to Newark it's more of a stop only if neccesary. Would be interesting to see a map comparing the amount of stops between the two, see if I can find it tomorrow.

I like Banbury, had an interesting experience in The Banbury House Hotel there once.

I also got caught at 101MPH at Banbury once too, but thats another story.... bloody fuzz :grumpy:

Anyway, as long as there's no Cocque-horse-riding. (i couldnt say ****)

:mischievous:👍

Btw Spec, I think I got one of your Memory cards. Unless someone else is called Ben....

Err its probably one of andrews spares then, i only took one memory card to the lan and it was red. the fact that its actually in my ps2 leads me to beleive that the one you have isnt mine nigel.

Thanks anyway 👍

Ben

You're a talking CD tray?

No, I'm a manufacturing engineer. Close. Some would say, about as interesting. :D

I think you should host the lan in your castle Venari.....

You have had the electrics put in now haven't you? 👍

Actually, if I'd converted my movie room by now, that would have been a fair idea (although it would be a bit tight at about 20x16ft.) But since I haven't, I can't. Let's just say my castle is of the compact and bijou variety.

Well, someone was called Big Ben, and it wasn't our Ben

Some would say this is casting dispersions on Ben's character. How do you know? Did you check? ;)

Right. Apologies for 'double posting' but new info arrives:

There are a number of community centres in and around Banbury. The one I just scouted out is Hanwell Fields Community Centre (School), and very nice and new it is too, and it's right next to a Co-op, a fish&chipshop and Hanwell Fields Pub (which is, dare I say it, a bit of a whopper. They do pub quizzes for the locals, been there myself once or twice.) I have no price on this yet, I shall enquire tomorrow. (The centre, that is, not the pub.)

The other place I had in mind is a bit more of an 'interesting' venue, and while they are geared up like a conference centre, I think they might accomodate us, as they do club meetings and stuff like that too. I am keeping shtum on this one for now, although an estimated cost for the weekend (Sat/Sun only, I think) would be £250, which is probably prohibitively expensive.

I will enquire to these and more over the week. Hotels I've only briefly looked at... you're looking at £65/night for a single, £90/night for two sharing. B&Bs are better, with a range from £20 to £35/night single, £40 to £50/night double, and one or two family rooms for £60-ish.

Is Famine ever going to flesh out UKGTP7's Monday? I'm dying to know what went on. ;)

Assuming we have a similar attendance as last time 250 for a weekend doesnt sound too expensive. For 16 people that’s 16 pounds. There’s a chance I’ll be bringing along a couple (6 or so) of Dutch LANners, amongst them Sjaak 68, WRS moderator. That would certainly bring down venue cost.
The hotel is the ‘expensive’ part of the deal. You’re looking at a minimum of 2 nights if not 3 if you’re returning on Monday.

I cant speak for the others but I’m still game. TBH I’d rather have Famine start on Ocho so we can get that show on the road soonest.
Deals can be found (sometimes) if bookings are made early and possibly my boat crossing would be a bit cheaper too.
Does the conference centre reside close to "food"?
