In my opinion, 100% equal cars is a dream.. PP system/ ballast system or not..
Obviously that's ridiculous. The point is to get the cars close enough that driver skill determines the outcome, not car choice. 100% equal cars was never even an option.
Having a diverse grid adds flavour and excitement to the grid. I enjoy being in a different car to my rivals. Team Wedssport had a great showing at La Sarthe. I suspect others feel a similar way. Part of the price for that is that cars are no longer exactly equivalent. That's a given. The idea is to make the cars we have as close as possible, so that people have a range of cars to choose from.
We're honestly not doing that badly. I haven't seen any major upsets due to car choice. The GTR and the NSX are close in GT500, and the Lexus looks like it's about even now too. In GT300 the Garaiya, the RX7, and the Celica are all very close, and the Subaru and Lexus aren't far behind. The MR2 *could* be fast, but I don't feel that anyone has given it a proper shot yet.
I feel like people are getting very caught up on the tuning of the cars, when what seems to me to be deciding most of the races is who can stay out of trouble and run consistent laps. That's driver skill right there. It's my rule of thumb that anything less than a second difference in hot lap times goes right out the window in a race situation.
