2017 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand PrixFormula 1

Ricciardo's accident looks exactly the same as Palmer's on Friday. Turns into a fast corner, and the car just seems to spin for no reason. Maybe we'll see a few more of these types of accidents over the season. Same thing could be said for Raikkonen and Bottas' respective accidents in testing.

Just saw a clip of Brundle noting that once these cars lose the rear they don't seem to stop turning. Too much shark fin?

It could be possible. The sharkfin would be aiding lateral stability, so would make it easier to get the car through corners because of how it moves the centre of pressure rearwards. That being said, thinking about it you would probably lose just a little in the way of turn in and a little rear downforce too. So going into a high speed corner the initial turn in would be a little more violent than what you'd get through the rest of the corner, which could be contributing to the spin.

The midfield battle made me think of the last time the aero rules were significantly changed.........always good to see bunched-together times although they still have some way to go to match that miracle:

Overtaking might be impossible, and Mercedes might be the fastest, but it feels so good that there's actually a chance Ferrari can touch them. Vettel seemed to think he could have set a better lap.

What's shocking though is how off the pace Red Bull are. I don't know if Ricciardo had more to give or not, but considering that we expected some more Newey magic this year, and Red Bull to become the team to beat, this is a real letdown. They're closer to the midpack than the front.

Can anyone explain to me why the NBC commentators said Schumacher's 1:24 record was still standing when they were running 1:23's last year?

Hamilton now only needs seven more poles to be the all time record holder.

This is because there are two types of records.

The "lap record" can only be set during the race itself. Schumi still holds this one - the 1:24.

The other record could be considered the "ultimate" lap record. This is the fastest time anything has ever been round that particular track in any session. That was the one that Lewis Hamilton beat today and now holds.

It was a bit surprising to see they were not much quicker even with faster tyres than last year in some corners in Q3 so might bode well for competitive overtaking if tyres hold up better, people might be able to attack better and driver skill and braveness seems to matter more.

Should make it more interesting with Daniel Ricciardo being a bit further back, hopefully get a few overtakes done. Bit disappointing how far they are off but at least Ferrari are close so might get a 2010 style battle. This time I reckon Fernando will regret it, I wonder if he will try and go back there if Kimi doesn't pick up the speed and Honda doesn't massively improve. Hopefully Honda get a lot closer to the top power units soon, would be disappointing if they end up pulling out with all that money spent.

The major problem still stands and it is the same as with Gran Turismo. SOUND.
Then it is the front ploughshare and too narrow rear wing. Also the cars should be a little shorter.
But when the sound changes, everything will be ''okay''. :)
With this turbo sound, they unfortunately sound like 200Hp cars or something like that.

If they can find a way to convince the manufacture teams that F1 is no longer relevant to road cars then big, loud engines could return. Or if they can invent an efficient big, loud engine.

The rear wings have actually been widened for this year. The cars are longer due to the larger fuel tanks. :)

This will be interesting season for us finnish fans with Kimi and Valtteri up there. Well Nico is also half a finn, but now mercedes has a pure flying finn..

.. and Vettel just loves Finland - even has a summer place here. Hamilton is the only outcast in the top5 f1 drivers of the bunch. :D

Just hoping Kimi and Valtteri dont keep the habit of crashing into each other as they have so many time done in the past. There has been some spectacular moments these two battling it out. Kimis old school aggressive passing vs Valtteris talent of making the car 15 feet wide and cool under pressure.

Good times..

At the same time as the manufacturers pulling out, of course. I imagine it would take a few years for F1 to stop being relevant to road vehicles though.

I'd been rather underwhelmed about these new F1 cars over the last month or so but decided to reserve judgement until I saw them on track. I'm glad I did - moving, they look fantastic.

Nah. Loud engines can do one. Still not heard one in person yet but on TV the hybrids seem much better volume-wise.

"You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

This has nothing to do with creating an efficient-but-loud engine.

Dumb question: What time is the race GMT? The clocks go forward tonight and it's throwing my schedule off kilter.

I completely disagree with this statement. They don't sound like 200HP cars at all - they aren't as quiet as the TV may make out. Turbos aren't a bad thing mate, I really don't see the problem.

Anyway, I was at the track yesterday and the new cars really are faster, not to mention louder as well. I loved it. Heaps of great stuff on and off the track, it really is great experience that I'd recommend to anyone. I can't believe Ricciardo failed in Q3... I want this race to be a good one, honestly.
