Damn, heavy crash there by Bottas. Red flag.

Yeah - the commentators on RTL (German channel) were suggesting that he may well have bent the chassis out of shape, and if they need to replace it he'll be starting from the pit lane.

Hammertime delivered, lap looked seriously hooked up. I think he would have been on pole comfortably even with Red Bull or Ferrari with that kind of driving though so looks like it should still be quite close in the race. Red Bull look like a serious threat this year especially if Renault improve, should be close tomorrow between the top three teams.

Hopefully Bottas is OK for tomorrow, should make it interesting him coming through from the back and should see how strong their car is in traffic. He really needs to get it together this year to stay in his position but looking at drivers that are free to move, they aren't looking so hot at the moment so still might be safe and he has shown he can deliver now and again. I think if Mercedes wanted to spice things up then they would need to get Verstappen or Alonso out of their contracts but still I think Hamilton will beat either or any driver for that matter in the same team.

Great to see Haas make it more difficult for McLaren and Renault for top 10 battle. Williams look like they might have a car good enough for Q3, maybe most competitive car regards to aero they've made in hybrid era. I wouldn't be surprised if they would have started P5 this race if they had a driver the calibre of Lewis, maybe they will be forced into giving Kubica some races to see how well he can do later on in the season if their current race drivers continue to struggle or get Massa back out of F1 retirement.

Looks quite promising for Honda after nearly being forced out. Will see tomorrow if their engine now holds up better in terms of performance in the race. If they can beat Renault in development this year then they will have potential to team up with Red Bull who seem quite a bit better than McLaren at the moment and they will probably get paid for it so a win-win for them after a bleak situation.

Sauber seemed to have a decent job to get them back in the game, their driver battle will be interesting to watch as it should give good indication the state of the feeder series, if level is getting too low or not. Force India made the most out of the last couple of years but now look they have a lot of work to do to be able to get into the points this season, looks like it will be a long slog for them.

Renault look like they are at a good starting point, McLaren will be interesting to see if they really have potential or not. Wonder what Alonso will do if they don't get to level of being at least of clear fourth best team this season. It will be funny if he gets stuck behind a Toro Rosso tomorrow and can't overtake due to straight line speed. :lol: McLaren were the slowest in the speed trap, same as last year and they can't blame Honda for it now.

He's 2 seconds up on P6. If Bottas hadn't crashed and Ricciardo hadn't got a penalty, he'd have been 2 seconds up on P7.

Last year he was 2.3 seconds up on P7.

Let's hope that Mercedes' qualifying mode asks too much of the engines and that their reliability becomes a proper issue.
 
Watching the Sky coverage, I do like how magnanimous and humble Nico Rosberg is about Hamilton, although I guess it also serves to (perhaps deservedly) emphasise how tough it was to beat him to the WDC. Love him or hate him, Lewis's pole lap was supernaturally fast.
 
All I want is equal cars, where anyone on the grid has a chance of winning. It shouldn't be about who has the biggest budget, it should be about the drivers at their full potential against each other. As controversial as it may be, I think F1 could benefit from a Balance Of Performance system
 
It's a Ferrari SF70H on disguised name with 2018 PU and suspensions. The real surpise would have been not being there.
Did you conclude this from looking at a few studio picture side by side comparisons? This just sounds like belittlement of a great achievement.

There are plenty of series to cater to that. F1 isn't - and never has been - one of them.

In fact it's as close these days as it ever has been to a spec series, with preset engine parameters (and three suppliers), basic gearbox requirements, standardised fuel pumps, control tyres and very specific rules on the size and placement of aero devices. In 1997 you had 3.0 V8s and V10s. In 1987 you had 3.5 V8s, 1.5 V6 turbos and 1.5 straight 4 turbos. In 1982 there were 3.0 V12s, 3.0 V8s, 1.5 V8 turbos, 1.5 V6 turbos and 1.5 straight 4 turbos - sometimes two different types in the same car. We've had front pylon wings, sidepod pylon wings, radiators in the nose, snorkels and six-wheeled cars. There was even a four-wheel drive car - and that was also the last front-engined car to win a race, competing against mid-engined cars!

If you're looking for control car series, F1 isn't it.

A detuned, de-revved V10 for a new team that was given a pass cause they weren't up to speed to get the newly made V8 (Minardi wasn't that is, new team got to keep old team's deal)...isn't really the same as what you've just said.
